I 2nd that color change each month thing.
I miss that. And changing the brightness of it.
I 2nd that color change each month thing.
I was speaking in generalizations there.
There are a few things the PS4 does better, and I've acknowledged that on this very forum before. I love the patch notes for example, and I love how the audio is muted through HDMI the moment I plug in my headset into the DS4. I certainly don't need to be informed of the PS4 feature set. I've probably logged hundreds of hours on mine.
Based on what we've seen from both companies, I would say one company has earned the benefit of the doubt, and the other has not. Do you disagree?
I think the SharePlay feature is going to be cool for about two minutes after people try it, and go "wow, there is a lot of input lag doing this. Kinda hard to play this game being streamed halfway across the country".
the doubt is if they will ever be able to put out games that are native 1080p at a steady pace. What is the doubt?
What exactly does the XB1 OS do that the PS4 OS doesn't? Outside of the TV passthrough stuff, since that's a hardware thing as well.
I'm not about to go on listing everything, but you can certainly do your own research if you're interested in finding out what the other guys have.

Not only does Microsoft have beta testers on updates a month in advance, they let the customers vote on most wanted features. You can't compare MS OS support to Sony
agreed. They promised a game console not a "everything in one" console or a "it only does everything" console.
it seems to me they are putting priority on aspects that make it a better game console not a media center.
the media center stuff will come with time but I'm more excited for awesome ideas like share play than DNLA which mostly a small percent of power users (although vocal) are asking for.
This isn't wrong.Because there are dozens of features missing on the PS4 right now. The fact that we're nearly a year out from launch and still missing so many features, in an era when firmware updates are commonplace on every single device we own.

I think the argument is that every feature the X1 and PS4 share, the X1 does it better.
Some of the big features include the ability to Snap apps to whatever you're doing effectivly letting you multitask. You can watch Netflix while playing a game, for example. It also has near-full voice control support for the system. You can already pause and reorder downloads. I'm sure there are other features I'm forgetting.
Maybe you do when you talk so condescendingly about it. A "few" is funny but the objective after all is "list wars". Not many months ago MS was lacking behind Sony on a variety of features - the idea that update wars should be at a par every single month is idiotic and I find the fanboy war fodder surrounding it very funny. It's the same fanboy war fodder surrounding "holiday lineup" - where as holiday is no longer Nov/Dec but also Sept and Oct. I wonder what that war will shift to next once 2.0 hits....since well, MS will be lacking a "few" feature sets from Sony's list. Lets not even talk about early 2015 exclusives wise for Sony, the holiday lineup can't be extended beyond Dec, but it can be retracted to Sept...... I can only naturally expect that you shift the benefit of the doubt given your criteria - it's the logical thing anyway - logic works.

I wouldn't make that argument. Some things do - like integration with friends and achievements and sharing video. If you regularly use snap you're probably far more in love with the Xbox OS than I am, but similarly I don't make use of PS4's remote play and have no intention of using PlayStation Now.I think the argument is that every feature the X1 and PS4 share, the X1 does it better.
Hey guys, when I first owned a PS3 in 2010, I thought I remembered there's was a dedicated YouTube app, and it was really, really good -- a lot better than using YouTube on PS4 or even on PS3 today.
I also thought I remembered someone on GAF saying because the PS3 used to have a dedicated app it was better and why it was better unlike now because it runs on the shitty web browser.
Can someone clarify ?
As others have said a lot is the way features work compared to its PS4 counterpart. What exactly does the XB1 OS do that the PS4 OS doesn't? Outside of the TV passthrough stuff, since that's a hardware thing as well.
One feature that the PS4 doesn't currently have that would drive me crazy is the ability to now show offline. There are times where I'd like to online game discreetly.
These are good updates though. Hope they come soon for PS4 users.
The PS3 app was basically youtube.com/tv but full screen and with proper controller support. It's still there, it hasn't gone anywhere. On the PS4 you need to use youtube.com/tv in the browser and full screen it yourself, and then you mostly have to use the controller to steer a mouse pointer around the interface. Gets annoying quickly, especially for searches. There is phone integration but thats a hassle that shouldn't be necessary in my opinion.Hey guys, when I first owned a PS3 in 2010, I thought I remembered there's was a dedicated YouTube app, and it was really, really good -- a lot better than using YouTube on PS4 or even on PS3 today.

Hmm, that one had never occurred to me. I've never misplaced a wireless controller but I can see how it could happen if you have little kids. With the DS4 they wouldn't need to use vibrate alone though because it has a built in speaker.- Controller find by making it vibrate.

Ah true, that hadn't occurred to me eitherIt's not a very useful feature imo, as the controller has to already be on for it to work. Which means it can only help you if you manage to lose the controller within 15 minutes of you last using it (without having put the console on standby during that time either).
But it doesn't turn off in game just plays over music already playing in game so they are bad at this already.
Wasn't aware of that, well you can scratch that one of the list. It's not a very useful feature imo, as the controller has to already be on for it to work. USB MUSIC YES.
Will save WWE 2k14.
From my limited experience with the XB1 OS, I'd say most of the features related to Friends (Friend lists, messages, etc.) don't suck ass. That's at the very least better than the PS4's implementation.
Layout/organization of items like your library is better, you can pause downloads, achievements still don't have to be synced and you can access an achievement description as soon as you unlock it, etc.
They're not specific features that the PS4 doesn't have, but there's a lot that the XB1 OS does that the PS4 simply does worse, which in my opinion is one of the main reasons why the PS4 OS is vastly inferior. If we really want to talk only specific features I'd say snapping, though I doubt anybody really cares about that.
I'd actually argue that xbox has more missing fundamental features than PS4 will have when 2.0 comes.
PS4 will be missing suspend/resume (promised by sony at launch)
Xbox will be missing background music playback and screenshots.
Anything else people want on PS4 is arguably not core functionality, although I'd be willing to accept DLNA and we've been told that is coming.
It really is. My experience with XB1's OS is that it's surprisingly stable and snappy on top of the big feature list, I'm super impressed by it, I've even dropped playing bluray movies on PS4 because of XB1. But I still like PS4 OS layout better, might be because I've used it for a lnger time but I don't really know, I just find myself searching stuff more often and clicking on different menu options way more on XB1 etc, it's like everything is put in too small folders with the wrong descriptions. To prepurchase Halo Master Chief Collection I first had to text search the store for "halo" before finding it :/This is all anecdotal evidence
Meh, comparing to phones is silly. They are just iterations of the same thing. Both PS4 & Xbone completely rehaul everything in their OSs so some features will be missing as they are limited by time when it comes to how many features they can add. Should PS4 have just used the same XMB as PS3 and kept all of its features or is it better to make a spanking new OS that brings in new functionality designed around the new console while sacrificing some old ones? Or was the XMB not quite suitable for some of the things they had planned so they had to ditch it?I don't understand why both MS and Sony are still patching in features from their previous, best-part-of-a-decade-old hardware. These features should have been there from the start.
People don't upgrade any other tech and then expect to spend the following two years waiting for old useful features to be added. The PS3/360 feature set should be the foundation of the next console. The new OS should include all of the features these machines had from the outset and then build on them, not patch in (for example) 3D blu ray 7 months later and act like it's a great thing when there was absolutely no excuse for either console to not have it day one.
And please, stop with the 'PS4 is all about the games!" mantra. This is just marketing working its magic. You purchased the machine for a fairly substantial investment. They owe you a console that improves upon their previous machine, not that misses countless fundamental features.
It is possible for the PS4 to be an excellent games machine and keep all of the media features from the PS3. Just because your smart TV or Roku or whatever answers your streaming needs doesn't mean there's any excuse for the PS4 not doing these things nearly a year from launch. Isn't the PS4 meant to be easier to code than the PS3? If so what's the OS team's problem?
I've never tried an XBone, so I can't comment from first hand experience. However from reading various threads here, it does appear they get frequent updates and, just as importantly, communication about the updates. That said, why an apparently media-driven machine like the Xbone had to wait 10 months or so for external media playback is anyone's guess.
As an aside, consider this. I just upgraded my Mac OS. Would it be acceptable if most of the features were removed, with a vague promise to patch them in at some undisclosed date in the future? Of course not. That's what iteration, upgrading and improvement is all about. Sure, some software or features becomes obsolete and removed, but only if the use they provided is found elsewhere in the system. If the fundamental features were removed, it wouldn't be an upgrade, would it? Playing MP3s on a consoles, or sodding notifications a friend is online are not obsolete features by any stretch.
If anyone told me I would still have both Playstations under my TV a year after the PS4's launch because they haven't bothered to patch in movie file support (or even fricking YouTube!) I would have probably waited instead of buying at launch. If I upgrade my mobile phone, I don't have to carry the old one around for a year or two afterwards because of missing features. There's no reason why it should be the case with consoles.
Apologies for the lengthy rant.
Dedicated Youtube app at last.
Still waiting for:

Firmware 2.0 thread. Is the PS4 2.0 preview thread or the OS vs thread? I may have got lost....
But do you mean that the doubt is regarding why it takes time for some features to come? Or do you mean if the doubt is if the features will come at all? For example, "It might take some time for Microsoft to bring (insert feature here) because they want to do it right, but there is absolutely no doubt that Sony is just being lazy since it also takes them some time as well". Or, "There is little doubt that Microsoft will release those features sometimes, but there is no way that Sony will release those features".People were questioning why I was giving Microsoft a pass on screenshots.
That might be. I wonder what type of solution they're thinking of to make this better though. Personally, i cant see what they can be thinking of that takes such a long time to complete.I'm guessing it has more to do with the lack of a share button on the joypad itself. The guide menu shortcut for "Xbox Record That" is fine as the video is constantly being recorded and isn't time sensitive. For the screenshots they need something that is instant, whilst not interfering with any potential inputs a game may be using.
The actual functionality for screenshots is probably not too much of an issue, as screenshots of apps can be taken for update preview feedback.
Lol this is pathetic. Last gen it was about how 360 games ran better, now that it isnt the case whats the next thing we can say is better.....hmmm updates!!! Microsoft has better updates and they are exclusive!! I buy a games console to play games, for everything else I have a smart TV and a PC. PS4 is crapping over Xbox One in terms of sales, yet the Xbox Fan boys still wont shut up.
Arabic support is actually quite a significant part of this update. It's harder than it looks, since it's a right-to-left language (i.e. it's not just a case of translating a few strings). I believe PS4 will be the first console ever to support it. A quick Google search shows it has been a highly requested feature on PS/XB consoles for years now.
Dude, the XBone has better and more frequent updates. This is a firmware thread so the comparison is gonna come up. And for the record, last gen people WERE yelling at Sony because of updates, just for the opposite reason.Lol this is pathetic.
