PS4 Update 4.5 is coming tomorrow, details inside

Isn't TRIM inconsequential in this case since many SSD's have garbage collection built into their firmware?

Long answer : https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/201...garbage-collection-so-i-dont-need-trim-right/

Like I said in an earlier post, if this was a typical workstation work load with lots of reading and writing performance would degrade over time, but if you are using it as external you are basically writing all the files once and then just reading off. When setting up the external storage it says that all screen shots and clips are recorded to the main drive, not external storage.

From what I know the PS4 does not actually have a Sata chipset and has a Sata to USB adapter inside. This means that performance internal vs external should be similar. For degradation it might even be better to have a HDD inside and an external SSD for games (OS system probably sees more write operations).

I did my before sets of tests, currently copying games to external. Seems slow, probably due to USB bus congestion (both drives on the same bus). It said 7 minutes on screen but I'm sitting at 15:45 and 60% done on Horizon.

Edit : GTA V update was installing in the background, probably what killed my transfer speed. HDDs are not great at doing multiple workloads at the same time.

My notifications are hilarious, there are cloud save file uploads errors from 3 years ago ... on top of the list :S
I've managed to "solve" this problem, selecting the notification, one x button press, one level deeper took me to the upload queue (which I've never seen before), a bunch of ancient failed uploads neatly queued, sitting there for years, I've just deleted the failed jobs and the notifications finally pissed off.

Which settings should I choose to make sure that my external hdd downloads games when the ps4 is on rest mode? And will the external hdd degrades over time if I leave the hdd on while the ps on rest mode?

Update is great overall, but completely breaks remote play on certain devices.
Used to play on my Pstv through the official app, but can't anymore, no update available.
Tried sideloading the APK on my Shield TV as well since that used to work, but same problem (that's ok, it's unofficial).
Works great on my Xperia phone and on PC, but Pstv not being updated is upsetting, I'm guessing Vita is the same.

I didn't have to change any settings, it just worked.

This update allows external storage? Holy shit, finally! Was getting tired of having to delete games all the time to install new ones. This is a game change - will definitely be getting another external drive for this.

Weird, when you click View Details on the patch notes on the Pro it doesn't even mention that boost mode is in there, but it is.

My tests are done (PS4 Pro | Stock HDD vs External SSD (Mushkin Reactor 500GB))

Horizon (timed from hitting Continue until the screen fades in)
56.13s HDD -> 32.57s eSSD

Destiny (from hitting "Launch" until "Tower Plaza" appears on screen)
80.16s HDD -> 51.55s eSSD Boost off -> 45.51s eSSD Boost on

GTA V (from "Loading story mode 0%" until fade in)
53.09s HDD -> 33.98s eSSD Boost off -> 21.75s eSSD Boost on

I had tested the SSD and dock on my PC first to make sure there was no bottleneck, was getting 135-140MBps write and 275MBps read. Boost mode gains are probably due to the data being compressed and how fast the CPU can decompress it (boost clock helps).

All in all, it cost me 200$ Canadian, gave me 50% more storage space and cut my loading times by 42%. Worth it in my book. Depends how much your time is worth, and if you want to have 120 games installed (then go for a huge HDD). I only play 3-4 games at a time tops, 1.5GB is plenty for me.

Any reason to not keep boost mode permanently on?
I'm keeping it permanently on until I encounter a game that crashes or behaves strangely, at which point I'll try switching Boost Mode off to see if that fixes it. I may never run into that situation, though, from what I read -- issues seem to be rare.

Leave boost on unless you have an non-pro patched game misbehaving. I'm pretty sure they left it off by default just to be safe.

Yeh, notifications are definitely a step backwards. I hated them in beta and was hoping they would at least provide a way to clear the list when it was released proper....but no.

I guess they will add that 'feature' in a future update.

Just updated my PS4 PRO..and for some reason after it downloaded and was done installing it did the whole rebuild database thing..is that OK..everything seems to be fine just wanted to be sure that is normal..used to happen from time to time with my PS4 but has not occurred with my PS4 PRO until now

Done the rebuilding database with me also, no issues experienced so far. Its done it before on the last firmware update also. I wouldn't worry about it.

Leave Boost Mode off, so that when you start a non Pro game you can switch it on and shout "BOOSTO MODO!".

Also did anyone else get confused by the smartphone icon where the online/offline icon is? It looks a bit like those squares you get when you don't have a typeset installed so I thought it was an error with my PS4 until my friend explained it to me.

Great thanks!! It was just weird..it used to happen a lot with my PS4 but hasnt happened yet with my PS4 PRO til now..also about the whole background image thing..should I Just use google images to find an image because I tried screenshoting an image from this site but it was weird it came with a weird green line on the top
I also received my external hard drive today(Western Digital 4TB) its USB powered..can I have it plugged in before turning it on, then it will recognize it..the only reason why I like it like that is because its a pain to go behind the console and plug it in, dont want to mess up anything back there since its such a tight space

Thanks for the stats. Did you test loading times for the standard drive with boost on?

Boost Mode is fairly underwhelming. Don't get me wrong -- it's nice that it tends to improve lots of games by providing more of constant 30fps where there were dips before.

On the other hand I thought you'd get more games jumping to 40-60fps but that's really not happening. I should have known since it's just increasing the CPU and GPU clock to full speed and not doing much of anything else with the CU's etc

It's a nice feature and I'm glad it's there, but if I didn't have a Pro, knowing what I know now I would not be running out to buy one because of this.

My thoughts so far. Granted I have only really tried The Evil Within, which was one of the worst performing PS4 games next to JC3, but the difference with Boost mode is seemingly negligible. It is possible that it's actively improved(and it could be rough chapters I have tested), but it's still far below ideal by any standard from what I have played.

Most everything installed on my ps4 has a pro patch otherwise, so trying to decide what else is a good test for this feature.

Seems like external SSD is no faster than internal then, dang.

Maybe I'm not remembering it correctly but seems like game installs are stupidly fast on my external HDD? Probably 5 seconds top when I popped in my copies of MGS5 and DE:HR for the first time.

Thanks for your effort, but to test out if external storage is faster than internal require identical drives for both internal and external for a fair comparison. Hope someone can post some numbers soon.

Many games are also capped at 30fps, even if it could be higher.

I'm also not sure why anybody would buy one for boost mode. It will soon affect a minority of games as each new release as a pro mode.

i turned on boost mode and wanted to see its effects in action. so i thought of the poorest preforming thing i had, which turned out to be ff15's platinum demo.

the thing is buttery smooth now, like holy crap.

Haha, that was actually the first thing I tried as well. Was not disappointed either. It really does run at a near-flawless 30 FPS now.

Has anyone posted comparisons between the same drive hooked up externally vs internally?

How can I clear all my notifications? I have about 12 "Discover" notifications from 11/10/2016 that I just want to go away. Even when I click on the notification to learn more, it remains.

Any reason to not keep boost mode permanently on?
I was playing some AC Unity multiplayer and saw some weird stuff.
Enemies warping around the room, my health depleting out of nowhere, etc.
It probably was because of lag but maybe playing a boost PS4 pro with a non boost caused some issues.

Struggling with my new external SSD (Samsung T3 250GB).

I have it hooked into the rear USB, formatted and transferred Horizon onto it. Game's playing great, I'm getting all the expected loading time boosts, but... when I exit out of the game and put the Pro into rest mode, when I boot it back up, it tells me I "failed to disconnect the external storage device" and it needs to repair it. It doesn't seem to do any harm, but the initial PS4 boot takes much longer and I'm worried it will do damage to the SSD.

Any advice? Do I have a setting wrong? I'm really hoping I don't have to disconnect and re-connect the SSD through the PS4 menu every time I want to use it :(

GTA V (from "Loading story mode 0%" until fade in)
53.09s HDD -> 33.98s eSSD Boost off -> 21.75s eSSD Boost on

That is fucking crazy - that is a 60% reduction in the load time between the SSD and boost mode.

There are a handful of games that break.
It's not certain this is true. I do have a list over in my Pro enhancements thread of those titles that were reported to have issues by GAF members. The most infamous of these is SOMA, which was said to crash.

But since those initial impressions, there have been reports (and video) of the game running fine with Boost Mode on. It's possible the crashes were unrelated to Boost, or may have been due to the beta version only. And other games with problems were less severe than SOMA, so they too might be fine.

Though they may also be broken; right now all we have is anecdotes, and not even many of those.

People disappointed with boost mode really need to understand what it does as opposed to what they expect it to do. It makes a huge difference IF you understand which games it will benefit. Any game with a pretty much 30 or 60 lock beforehand won't see a noticeable improvement because there isn't anything that needs improvement. You need to look at games that struggle with performance, which there are many, to see the biggest gains. I could literally list dozens where the improvements are huge.

I don't get it. We can have some games with better performance or entirely fixed thanks to the boost mode, but this feature it's not so great for some of you. For me it's exactly the opposite and a good incentive for the potential buyers. Obviously me too I'd preferred better performance for all, but let's be realistic. I just hope Sony will work more on it and doesn't think the job it's ended here. CUs could be used in some way. And with Scorpio in the horizon, should find a way to compete with it, especially if its boost mode is expected to be one of the major feature.

Does sharing videos work differently now or am I missing something? Before the update after pressing the sharebutton you could select to share the video and then choose any of your videos and edit its length. Now it automatically chooses the clip that was just recorded by pressing the sharebutton with no way of choosing another clip

I'm sure this has been answered before, but I don't feel like digging:

Can we move games that have already been installed on the internal hard drive to an external, or do we need to delete and reinstall?

EDIT: Yep. Just worked this out for myself.
