PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

I'm curious to see what the approach is because I remember him mentioning that several major publishers wouldn't be on board with it due to it screwing up their development timelines. If they have found a way around that, it'll be great to see. I like the idea of upgraded hardware but I don't want a hardship on devs.

Yeah, the rest of the year is going to be really interesting.

So if Microsoft was really caught off guard, what does that mean for the XBO.5? Will the PS4K have a headstart? And if so then does that give MS the benefit of coming out with a stronger box?

not a fanboy comment at all. smh

I can't wait till these damn consoles get revealed because folks are all over the place with their hopes and wishes. It's making my head hurt every time I come in looking for some actual information to see if we have any details revealed.

I just hope the new consoles bring the damn power.

Since when was texture mapping upscaling?

Stop playing dumb and pushing your argument to the most illogical extreme.

The moment you take something out of the rendering pipeline that is calculated with a 3D matrix transformation and try to fill in those blanks with a 2D algorithm you are upscaling (or performing post processing on) the image.

That is what separates 2D and 3D.
That is what separates DPUs and GPUs.
That is what separates post processing and native rendering.

AND you still OBVIOUSLY can't wrap your head around the concept.

False!

When did Texture mapping become upscaling?

How is that talking crazy? it could be untextured pixels with other stuff not being rendered by the weaker GPU then added in the final output. or something like that

It's crazy to think things work as easily as it is. There's a reason why anyone on PC would tell you to avoid multi GPU despite years of drivers.

It's not as good as one GPU.

How can we be still debating about upscaling?

Lets end this once for all, come on.

To achive the goal of getting the color of every pixel on the screen, we have two methods/sources:

-Rendering / Game code:

For a given resolution, the color of each píxel will be calculated from analyzing all the objects of the current scene of the game and applying the different illumination systems and filters (like AA or anisotropic).

The native resolutions is formed by all the pixels which color have been calculated by analyzing data of the game.

-Up/Downscaling:

The colors of the pixels comes from applying algorythms on the pixel/color data we already got in the rendering process.

End. Is just as simple as this.

WTF is even going on anymore?
Man, I really want some legit info before E3 because I have no idea what to believe at this point. :/

Also does Gopher's play have a love triangle? Or is it going to end up a threesome?
And who the fuck is Alan?

Confused ?

Whoa...this game on PSVR, looking as good as this, would make it easier for me to buy a PS4K.

Yeah if that's in game then I'm in for ps4k and psvr. Sign me up right now and I never thought I'd want console VR.

To clarify as of right now it's not coming to Playstation 4 as it didn't reach that funding goal. However there's a really good chance it will. So it would be nice for those with PSVR to have a machine capable of getting that kind of performance.

Here's some footage from the pre-alpha status ~8 months ago.

It might be able to. To be honest I would think games dealing with space should be fairly easy vs games on a planet since you need much higher res details and such

I would kill for a Playstation that was capable of playing my old Playstation, Playstation 2, and Playstation 3 games, throw in a UMD adapter for good measure to play my PSP games.

This would be far more exciting than 4k anything or improved performance. Screw software emulation too. Give me one Playstation to play them all.

I agree.

Oh no they could definitely get it to 60 fps on PS4 but it wouldn't look anything like those gifs. That's the problem .

Just like what is being talked about here is a method of upscaling
By that logic GT 6xscreens was upscaling too - the rendering-methods are nearly identical. I mean, this comes down to question of how much we want to abuse the terminology. Upscaling is typically used to describe output-resolution conversion, which is not exactly what happens here.

But the resolve of an AA method doesn't result in increased framebuffer resolution
It's relatively easy to modify most-AA resolves to work as upscalers though (quality of course, will vary drastically).

Fair enough. Though isn't the multiple subpixel shifts to generate the samples you'll coalesce technically a kind of (very simple) reprojection?
Not in any real sense. The offset-samples are generated via rendering the frame multiple-times. Reprojection takes old/existing samples and projects them to new time/location (which would be more closely related to upscaling really).

Imagine a screenplay based on this. I like to call it "An imagining of lives utterly unrelated to reality" or some shit.

JOHN, HARRY and ALICE sitting in the slums of SIE HQ meeting rooms.

JOHN - NX is coming out, rumoured power similar to current gen and we're losing our most powerful console bullet point. Microsoft are moving on their.... plans (snigger) and look likely to put pressure on us in the US (giggle). Do we need to do anything else with our marketing?

ALICE - Nothing extra needed in the west. Possibly in Japan as Nintendo launches soon and 3rd parties are getting worried about the market.

JOHN - Well that 4k slim update is happening, we could update specs if Alan is worried about the timing.

HARRY - OK, get a design run done. Check thermals and costing. Run a prototype through production partners.

JOHN - On it.

John runs out of the room. Alice looks at Harry with lust in her eyes. Harry after all is devastatingly handsome.

John returns.

JOHN - Design done. Prototype done. Looks and runs sweet. Cost still too high though.

HARRY - True. Let's check production partner for ways to cut costs.

KYLE at Fab - Fuck no. You done. I have kids and share portfolio to feed. Cost savings must come from you.

ALICE - Don't make me go back to that cheap coffee again.

HARRY - *grimace* Ok, how about dev support?

GREG TWOFACE - *shrug* Your toolkits are good. You sell it, we'll make shit on it.

HARRY - Hmm, still not sure. Market may or may not react well. Check retail partners.

JOHN - what do we tell them? They'll run straight to Phil due to their arrangements in place.

ALICE - Tell them the truth. After all they have proven themselves trustworthy in the past.

*Pause*

HARRY, JOHN and ALICE burst out laughing.

HARRY mentally notes that Alice looks kinda hot in that power suit.

Later that day.

ALICE to a few weary faces, worn down after trying to swindle cash anyway they can from customers.

ALICE -... has improved specs, two gpus, upgraded CPU, UHD BD and will maintain the strongest console marketing point. And it outputs at 4k. Or is that uprenders? Never mind...who gives a shit? So, how does that sound?

Fade to black.
No sense. I mean, when your competitor release a new hardware, even more powerful, is not necessarily a sure winner or a menace. Think a new model just for this, it's almost amateurish.

Only just bought a PS4. :(

(And I have a 4K TV, too. Sadface.)
In 2013 a Microsoft VP said the XB1 hardware can support UHD Blu-ray (with firmware update) which is confirmed by HEVC profile 10 being released for the XB1. A Sony rep said the PS4 has a HDMI 2 port which is confirmed with the latest Playstation VR goggle lecture (supports two separate video streams and 120 FPS). Also at launch the; "PS4 supports 4K media".

Between all these statements in 2013, both the XB1 and PS4 launch consoles should support all 4K media.

Oh; by the way, The Digital Foundry video says the launch PS4 can't support 4K nor can they see any way a PS4.5 or 4K has a 2X GPU. So who do you believe? Do the research for yourself. If you dismiss DFs statements about the PS4 UHD support then the only conclusion is that everyone is confusing a firmware update coming in October with a new PS4K because everyone assumes the Launch PS4 can't support 4k media.

The PS3 except for drive and HDMI port can support 4K media. The HDMI port can be bypassed with HDMI 2's multi-view which treats the LAN port as a HDMI port with software (PS4 can do this also as can the XB1 as it's a HDMI 2 standard). A standard 8X speed blu-ray drive just needs a firmware update to support Version 2 disks which is in the Fuji book (XB1 and PS4 can do this). PS3 early drives are 4X with 2X required for HD blu-ray.
