PS5 Pro Enhanced - Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

It is actually pretty exciting that 4K, 60fps as already become mainstream on the consoles. I expected for the fidelity and performance mode options to be separate for this entire generation.

Naughty Dog's next game is REALLY going to blow everything out of the water if they deliver it on launch at 4K, 60fps.

Same with the next Battlefield title, if Vince Zampella is to believed.

Yeah, multiple Pro modes is dumb. Just use the power and funnel it all into fidelity+ visuals at performance+ frame rates.
Represent. Represent. Is coming for you bro

I really dont understand why everyone of these devs said how they wanted the players to experience the best fidelity without sacrificing framerate. Because we know for a fact that they are adding multiple new Ray tracing options to the fidelity mode.

You are literally making them choose again.

And thats ok. id rather play at 30 fps with rt shadows and AO, but bizarre for them to say this.

I've recently platinumed Ratchet 1-3, size matters, secret agent clank, all 4 one and Q-Force. I'll be doing deadlocked next and in 3 weeks when I get my pro I think it'll be the perfect time to give Rift apart another blast.

Their messaging is definitely scattered but truth be told it's a lose lose situation from a marketing perspective given the circular relationship between fidelity and framerate, i.e. you will ALWAYS be able to push fidelity at lower fps, regardless of hardware. At the end of the day, I'm glad Insomniac and other devs have chosen to keep pushing the bar even if it comes at the "expense" of confusing messaging. Which again, can never ultimately be satisfied without leaving extra fidelity on the table.

TLDR; great choices/options are always a positive.

Can't do fidelity mode at 60 fps because of the CPU.
Given we've seen instances of 20fps gains over base PS5, and considering some Fidelity Modes on PS5 run at 40fps, it most likely can get extremely close but not guarantee a rocksolid experience.
I can't imagine trying to sell "our $700 Pro 60fps Modes show the same exact fidelity of every regular PS5 Fidelity, instead of simply very close and at times better, but run worse than 60fps Modes on PS5".

What? You don't like faster CPUs?

There's a reason they had to make options, since the CPU is too slow to do the Fidelity Mode at 60 fps.

No?

It would just be better than it is now. It would allow it to power past CPU limits like in BG3 act 3.

PS6 will be ~3x GPU and at least 2x CPU upgrade (plus 2x RAM?) over standard PS5.

Changing the "brains" of the console entails updating the entire development suite for the console which will make developers essentially coding for two versions of the game...stop thinking of consoles as PC.. its not the same!

Name a single instance where console maker changed a CPU midgen? Never happened, never will happen.

So which mode should I choose to get the best framerate & fidelity?

I'm not a nerd, so I don't know what all this PSSR nonsense is about.
The performance mode on the pro is still the best mode. The 40fps mode is ok to test out with a bit higher res and more RT features, but 60fps is still the king.

Unless games are really blurry and have image quality/stability issues, then On the pro, always go for the performance mode.

3DS

Modern consoles have an SDK/API that abstracts hardware, it’s totally possible to increase the CPU mid-gen.

The reason they usually don’t is because it’s a waste of resources, you can’t give the Pro version of a game more NPCs or better AI as that’s making a fundamentally different version of the game. So the only thing the CPU upgrade can do is iron out existing performance.

Where as a GPU upgrade, you can crank up all the settings, so you get more bang for your upgrade buck.

You are often better off upgrading things like ram and bus speeds in a mid gen bump, as that can also sort cpu bottlenecks on existing games, without generating more heat and consuming more power. I suspect the PS5 pro has some improvements here even if they’ve not spoken about it.

Its funny they say you dont have to choose but they add a Fidelity Pro mode, we are at square one again lol. Im totally fine with it, im just wondering what better marketing line they could have choosen so you don't have this "problem" again.

Their message is that you don't have to choose quality over performance. You can get quality Fidelity at performance framerates now. Which has been proven many times. The default Pro modes on games is the best of both versions of a base PS5 game. Not sure why so many are choosing to struggle with this.
