PSN connection problems (12/24)

ppl weren't fucking dumb babies as much then

I honestly think they are using 50% of their servers to be able to work/render TLG film. We know a game is not coming soon, so they are making an animated movie to rival AVATAR. Catbird is gonna look amazingly real. So they are using all their server power to work on these projects, leaving PSN in the shitter.

That's the legacy of Microsofts operating systems, in graphical form.

You mean, the legacy of something planned out in 1974 by the IEEE. Syn baby, Syn.

Why has this become such an issue when it was not one before on previous generation consoles?

Why are there wars, and then not wars? Why are there rain, then not rain? Because stuff happens when it does. Right now, buncha kids have access to the tools to really pull the hurt on servers, so they do.

It's not that, if a sophisticated bit of malware is written to target a specific company how can the AV software that is typically used to protect against global threats protect from that?

Once you are around the software protection you just need to dupe the guys in the server room that your traffic is legit which shouldn't be too hard if you piggyback everyone else's traffic.

Weird. all my PSN stuff seems fine (store, FL, etc) but I can't play Battlefield,,, can't connect to EA online it says.

Well... there is. Think of how much traffic Google receives on daily basis. Aside from how huge a search engine it is, the fact that many people have it set to their desktop, programs ping it to see if the internet is working, etc. It's almost like they are getting DDoS'd all the time. They just have servers than can handle the load.

Google has the benefit of a much broader attack surface. You don't need real time connectivity with anyone else searching. Not only that but you likely won't even realize if you're missing search results if a node which recently indexed them is unavailable. That's a hypothetical example because I have no idea how googles search works.

Well, some shithead is spamming the servers, so that's what's going on.

Someone already explained why this is a thing - and why it's not a simple issue to correct.

then we shouldn't have to pay for it. since we are paying for it they should work harder to make sure it does not happen. and it was never down as frequently as it is now when it was free.

i was just in a party and 6 of my buds were doing a raid on destiny A-OK, now I cant even join their party nor launch destiny, cant even make it to the character selection screen.

Can see the store here and there. friends list buggy etc

But this is an outside factor. And it was down just as much in the PS3 times sans the big hack (and these LS attacks).

People smarter than me have pointed out in other threads that the cost would be way above a whatever PS+ is gaining by membership. Microsoft can allow itself that cost because they have a server farm business.

Saying that it's outside factors is no excuse. Companies like Sony have teams in place (or at least should) to prevent these sort of attacks. DDoS is obviously a tough one to completely stop but there are various means of minimizing the impact. With Sony's history of shoddy network infrastructure I'd be surprised if they were up to date in this area.

I'm aware. Looking at my post again, I wasn't being clear. What I meant to say was that either the vast majority of network security professionals are incompetent (not likely), or it is genuinely extremely difficult to fully secure a network against some forms of attack (very likely).

smarter than...?

and whatever the case may be, who suffers because of all this? us. and we are the ones paying for it, literally.

Why has this become such an issue when it was not one before on previous generation consoles?

This is just conjecture, but it's only become a recent thing that those in control of large botnets earn some cash by letting people "rent" time on them. So a bunch of kids with stolen credit cards go to specific blackmarket IRC channels, pay someone, and then get airtime to Command and Control these massive, massive botnet infections that exist on millions of PCs, and tell them to do a basic attack at a server. Before, probabably as early as 10 years ago, these types of botnets were much more low key, and in the hands of far more reserved hacking groups.

I guess there's just more money now in getting one set up, and then renting it out to idiots.

I have no idea what they actually implement so it's hard to say what to recommend. I'm assuming they spent a lot of time on intrusion detection and prevention after the hacks a couple years back, but most of those solutions offer minimal help with these sort of attacks since theyre not actually trying to get too far into the network to get data anyway

Here's a white paper from Cisco that covers a lot of the very basics and briefly explains why most standard network security implementations just aren't suited for DDOS type attacks. They recommend their branded solution that I don't have any experience with personally.

Both my PS4 and PS Vita appear to be back to normal now, but the PlayStation Web site is still giving a "maintenance" message.

DDoS is not about hacking anything, it's just about filling the hosepipe with other peoples dirty water.

It's the hacking equivalent of picking your nose and eating it.

Destiny bundle was a bust for my nephews Christmas gift tonight. Couldn't create a PSN account to even get started.

Driveclub was there to save the evening from total meltdown.

Just bought Battlefield 4 in the PSN sale, tried 3 games, lost connection 3 times. PVZ Garden Warfare can't connect to EA servers at all.

It was dropping in and out for me while I was playing Driveclub earlier, but thankfully I was just doing single player. Still, I went ahead and turned it off and hopped on Xbox One. Got tired of seeing the server message pop up.

Luckily I always go to the parents place for Xmas and don't have to deal with this nonsense. Hopefully these dumb kids get bored it gets back to normal by the weekend.

It was down earlier for me (Ontario, Canada), but seems to be all good now. I bought a few things off PSN on PS4 and also synced my trophies while playing online on PS3. So maybe it's a Christmas miracle for all and is coming back...?

I played a couple rounds of Battlefield 4 tonight from around 5 to 6 EST and it worked fine for me. Haven't been on since. Won't be back home until tomorrow night.

You can switch it off in settings.

I got server jitter two days ago, first time in months. That sale is going to bring a lot of fresh cannon fodder to BF.
