should I do it even if I don't have any cards in my name?
(unemployed)

I did this because I am not sure what card I have on record with PSN. Could be good if someone tries to open an account up, however it's kind of difficult without your SSN.

One positive outcome of this is maybe when this info is released people can see what the true count of users that PSN has. I know Sony made some big claims as to the count of their subscriber base.

Great
Sony: Well besides losing millions in possible purchases and unknown millions from loss of consumer confidence, we also found out that we only had 20 million unique users :(

There are three forms of second layer verification for Lastpass.

1. A free grid authentication
2. A paid Yubikey
3. A paid sesame USB

If any of those is enabled, the hacker would have to physically steal your authentication method as well as your Lastpass password.

pretty much what I said. they have no evidence. Yeah they added that second part, which is purely worst case scenario... I mean maybe they felt they had to, but such speculation just causes panic.

Disaster situation .. one must identify worst case scenario in the event it actually happened. My only gripe is being 6 days late with this.

Well you got to figure the 77Million isn't the actual number of PSN users thought, like my PS3 has 4 accounts. My main US with information and my fake JP,EU,Hong kong store accounts which have nothing and you can bet Sony counted that as 4 accounts to make there numbers sound more impressive. But still they might be done, depending on how this goes.

exactly, I highly doubt sony is paying $318 to see if Fake Fake on 123 Fake St. in Fake, TX 99999 really had their data stolen.

I may do it tomorrow. I did it for my mother though (because it was her card I used for purchases)

That's supposing that all 77 million accounts are unique (and real) people.

It's kind of ironic that Sony (or MS) would usually be quick to claim in implicit ways each account as a separate user... except for this kind of situation.
It may be a unique opportunity to know how many real individuals are using PSN.

Look at how many consoles are out there.

Not 77 million anyway, at least half of those accounts are duplicates etc.

Really don't know how FIrstinHell is still allowed to post in here.

First his ebay "seling my ps3" post which was proven to be fake

then all the ranty posts

if he wasn't caught out on the "selling PS3" nonsense, people would have believed him. As is, its just been a series of troll posts. and of course, now its about sony and their PS3 PSN numbers.

sure.

I don't have a PS3 console but I have a PSN account, not to say there aren't a lot of duplicates but just counting PS3 consoles isn't a valid method to determine unique ID's either.

PSP accounts count too, and more than one person in a house might want an individual account, they're not all people like us having accounts in different countries for early demos and stuff.

It's sourced to Forbes, but all they did was multiple $318 (the cost of one compromised record) by 77 million accounts.

It's not exactly clear in the Forbes article who that estimated cost is being attributed to by Ponemon either. VG247 relays it as the cost of investigation, but the Forbes article doesn't qualify it as that, and I am very sure Sony won't be spending anything like $24bn investigating this breach. If I had to guess I'd think that estimate relates to 'loss' per compromised record due to CC abuse etc. - i.e. cost to 'everyone' as a result of these breaches, not to the company breached per se.

My wife just called me (i'm at work) and her CC called her and asked about a possible fraudulent charge. 250 bucks to Dish Network. Card cancelled, thanks Sony.

WHEW! Looks like you dodged that bullet! Next time stick to free porn online. ;)

Jesus.

Not sure if this is related but I just got 93 e-mails into my Hotmail account, all from the same sender: "The Seven Ancient Health Services"

The subject is: "You friend "The Seven Ancient Health Services by Kapcer M. Powatski has recommended t..."

I didn't open the e-mail out of fear/paranoia. This is odd because it's not the e-mail I linked to my PSN. It is, however, the e-mail I use for Xbox Live and the 2 e-mails might have had the same password. Either way :(

I did exactly the same trying to get the Jag XJ13.
Lots of people do it. I have a US, Hong Kong, and Japan account. Plus, I know a ton of people who, in the beginning of the PSN, made a bunch of accounts just so they could get first choice on PSN ids.

let me see...i just redid the math and it's going to cost Sony $26 trillion, +/- $3,000.

GAME OVER!

How do you know he was lying about selling it?
Well unless he was also selling 5 other PS3s, a PSP, and a bunch of jeans because "I am a Husband, father and now a grandfather with a full time job, but I enjoy doing this aside; it helps me with the high cost of living" then he's a liar.

It's okay guys.. if the affected userbase was 20% of that number, it would only be $6 Billion lost.

He's got a stockpile of PS3 slims as well. Selling them all?
