PSP and sunny days

Has anyone experienced the problem where if you're outside on a extremely bright day you won't be able to see your PSP's screen? I tried playing mine on the bus stop at noon and couldn't see a thing, although it was fine in the shade. I figure it's probably because of the coating on the screen, or my screen cover

They amplify all the imperfections on the screen too. I can only see fingerprints when I play outside, it's horrible. The PSP is a lot less portable than I had hoped, it's way too delicate.

Happened to me today as well. Untold Legends + dark cave + brighty shiny day (IRL) = STOP!

The logitech case will help me out with that. I can't believe I keep forgetting to go to the store and buy it!

It just came out like yesterday...has anyone actually seen it in stores?

When you have a PSP, every day is a sunny day.

Oh, and yes, PSP has a crazy amount of glare in natural sunlight. It's a feature though, like the defective square button, dead pixels and ghosting.

Thats what made me think they were out in the stores. I may go and check to be sure. Thanks for the clarification.

I called around just now, nothing at Gamestop, EB, or Best Buy, and they don't expect them until next week. The 19th/20th is what I'm being told. There was a week delay.

Maybe the Gamestop website doesn't have updated info?

Thanks for saving me a trip. Thats around the time my 1GB card should be shipping from dell! :D

Yep can't see a thing when it is sunny. I was playing ridge racers at the Aus F1 GP in between the support races... well I only played one lap or so... stopped 'cos i couldn't see where i was gonig even with the brightness all the way up.

isn't there a switch where you can toggle the backlight?

No, you can only change the brightness of the backlight or turn the entire screeen off. There's no way to turn just the light off. It's pretty stupid when you think about it. Hopefully it'll be fixed in a firmware update.

if they do fix it in a firmware update, this would then solve this problem, correct?

This is true. We should be thankful to Sony.

I picked up the Logitech case at Rhino Video Games today.. 20 bucks later, and it's nice to have something sturdy to carry around.. It's also more comfortable on my thumb using the joystick with the case..

Got any pics of it with the PSP in the case? I heard someone say it looks kinda big when the PSP is in the case

That's because it's a backlit screen. It doesn't work without the light.

You know - Haven't had the pleasure of having held a PSP in my hands (but I have seen one in action), but I always thought the sexiness of the screen was because they were using their awesome technology seen in their T-range cameras - I ahve a Sony T1, and photogrpahy -taking capabilities aside, the screen on that thing is truly amazing. It works in direct sunlight, whther the backlight is on or off (in fact in the sun, you can't tell if the backlight is on or off). I guess the PSP doesn't ahve a screen like that - or atleast the same surface.

On that note meet the T7:

Oh man that's hot, is it out in NA? Or just in Japan. Also, price please.

I dunno. I saw it out here, but that could've been an import. Either way, I dar anyone to see one and not fall in love (unless they know how the T-series actually performs). It was, I think comparable prices to the T3 models - but like I said, it could've been imported, and therefore lower tahn a local RRP.

So can anyone compare the PSP screen with a T1/T3?

then why does nintendo's official site say it's backlit, and not 'reflective front lit'?

I stand corrected. I assumed they were going the GBA SP route since you could turn off the light and still view it with front lighting. They're using something I had not seen before where the screen is transparent and they shine a light behind it to illuminate it. Kind of like an overhead projector.

Regardless, the PSP does not have a reflective lit screen at all like most backlit LCD screen devices. It's the reason that the screen looks a million times better than the DS screen.

Totally opposite for me. I figured it would be extremely delicate and would see limited use outside of my home...but that isn't the case. I've been carrying my PSP fairly often these days. It's very nice to have on hand...

This is incorrect. The screen is still on when the backlight is turned off (in the right lighting conditions you can barely tell that the screen is still on).

But the difference between backlighting and frontlighting is that a backlit LCD can ONLY be lit from the rear. The GBA SP was still playable with the light off because it was lit from the front, natural lighting can illuminate the screen.

So actually it would make MORE sense to actually turn off the screen when you turn off the light.

Yeah. The very first thing I did when I got my system was to slap a screen protector on it. Aside from some fairly light scratches on the screen protector (better than on the screen itself), my system is flawless. I was scared with all the people saying the cleaning cloth would scratch the system, but it doesn't at all. 5 seconds with the cloth wipes off all the fingerprints and it looks fresh-out-of-the-box new.

I have T1 which apparently uses the same screen as T7. It's not like PSP. On T1 you can see the screen easier during the sunlight, but it's generally worse than the screen on PSP.

Btw, I've made some very pretty photos using T1, can't complain about it's performance. It's not a digital SLR, but it's ten times smaller than one, and compares well to many other small digicams I've seen or used.

thanks for the info. Man, if the PSP screen is generally better than the T1, that's even more amazing!

Yeah, the photos from my T1 are pretty good, but a few things bug me - the flash is really weak, making it's use nearly zero for snapshots indoors, and the fact that in lowlight conditions the shutter is open so long, combined with it's small size makes for a lot of handshake problems. Also Red eye is near constant because of the proximity to the lens, and still a problem with reduction on. For outdoor photos, though, it's great - and that screen! It's awesome to show off photos if nothing else. Macro mode is awesome, as is the magnifying glass mode. Pictures like this are possible!:

The T7 is pure yumminess in form factor and design.

Yeah, the magnifying glass mode is *crazy*.

I agree with the complaints. I found out that you can control the shutter speed by using different ISO setting and various program modes. What I really like about it's indoor photos/no flash setting is the rich orang-ish tone it gives photos. I absolutely love that look.

Generally, the biggest problem is the weak flash. I haven't tried the "high" flash setting in the program mode though.

The nice thing with T1 + PSP is that you can just pull out the memory stick from the camera, plug it in the PSP, and you instantly get even better and bigger preview of your photos :)

You're right about the ISO. But like you said, it's probably more of a snapshot camera - if you wanted more manual control, other cameras would probably be better. Can't say I like the orangey look of indoor photos, just like I can't stand yellow incandescent lighting. I've tried the high flash setting a few times -I think it does improve things slightly, if your subject is a little further away. A goos mode is the slow release shutter, if you don't like the dark backgrounds in your flash photos.

I;d better say aomething about screens...uh...yeah, would the PSP benefit from having the reflective technology the T cameras?
