PSP Vs. DS : The "wow" factor..

The TGS response was much more valuable, imho.
WTF... there were no playable DS units at TGS. DS was not playable in Japan until the Touch! roadshow. So we're back to square one. The two machines have never been playable side-by-side, and I don't know if anyone in the media has even played a final production PSP unit yet.

Oh man. Did this thread have some casualties.

Anyhow, I think it's a little dumb to ask about the "wow factor" for a handheld that's been released vs. one that HASN'T.

To be honest, I think it is safe to say the PSP has already had bigger WOW factor to those who have seen it versus the DS. Don't forget the PSP has already been the cover story on Newsweek with an article about it inside.

No, you misunderstood me. I meant only that TGS was more valuable for guaging response to the PSP. So, for instance, use E3 to guage response for DS, and use TGS to guage response for PSP.

Speaking of that, do you know where I can get a link to the story that was contained in that issue?

Personally, I think that if you're more worried about the *WOW* factor than actually enjoying your damn game, you need to quit gaming. Now.

Must all your posts have to do with fellating Nintendo, poorly put-together anecdotal evidence and comments showing your insecurity with your product of choice?

Lol, OUCH!! :lol

I read those articles. Have writers become bored with the assload of GBA's that are sold every month in every region?

was he really banned for this?

anyway.. my little view. im surprised by how much more people are interested in this little machine (DS) once they actually try it.

For what it's worth (not a damned thing),

My brother has been carrying around his DS everywhere we've gone this weekend - theatre, Barnes & Noble, bowling alley, and a few restaurants. Altogether, 6 different people asked to try it out, and every person was impressed. Maybe it wasn't the graphics, but everyone seemed genuinely impressed with the DS.

Anyways, where do these people come from? I would never go up to someone and say "Dude, can I play your game"...but it really happened. Also, my Christian cousin who hasn't touched a controller since Dragon Warrior IV was hooked on the Mario minigames. I ended up letting him borrow it for awhile.

All in all, the PSP is certainly the more impressive system on paper and to video/audiophiles. The DS, however, is geared towards pedophiles, so...the outcome is anyone's guess.

I'd say both systems are impressive, but the PSP appears to be most impressive.

/pointless post

JohnTVs DS did the rounds this weekend at a group dinner, and non-gamers and females alike all found it interesting - trying to get Kimishine off a couple of them was a challenge to say the least.

Would the PSP have the same effect? no one knows - the PSP is certainly a sexy machine , but given the non-gamers lack of interest in PS2 games, you'd suspect it was more to do with the rub and touch aspect of the games that perhaps made it more appealing to a non-gamer??

I think this might be the reason retailers are more excited about the DS - potential to bring in a whole new crowd.

What does that have to do with the DS and the PSP?

You're being sarcastic, right?

Ok, I'll explain it slowly.

DS out right now.

PSP no out right now!

So DS most impressive handheld on street!

But ooga booga, here come PSP!

Now DS no longer most impressive handheld on street!

PSP come, Wow people all day long!

DS no longer big wow man on the block.

DS is sad.

But DS still has a good user base!

And PSP is trying to build user base!

So together they ride off into the sunset!

In terms of "wow factor"?

Yes.

It's also worth noting that the PSP is a much bigger leap [over the DS] visually than Xbox is over PS2.

If the PSP made inroads like the X-Box has, that would be fucking murder for Nintendo. Microsoft has an entire huge monopolized industry to rely on, if Nintendo sees their profit in the handheld industry cut into, what are they going to turn to, their consoles? :lol

Just remember one thing...NIntendo's handheld empire was built two things...Tetris and Pokemon. Sony needs something like that. Maybe a DQ game in japan or i dont know gta or something simple in the US.

The important thing are the games, and neither of them have really intrigued me yet. I own a DS cause I commute an hour to and fro by bus to school and my GBA (OG) doesn't cut it anymore. I am really interested to what games the DS is launching in America to battle the PSP launch, a new pokemon game?

Depends when the PSP launches here. I bet the DS will drop to $130 when it does so that a) the gap between the two is much larger (if the PSP comes in at $199 instead of $150) and b) the system is worth even less when it's traded in at those specialty stores, making less of an incentive to get rid of it.

A $200 PSP w/ mem stick would be murder to Sony, I imagine, let alone a PSP for $150. The problem is the DS kinda opens or shuts the door for Sony. If the DS is successful in the long term, it'll be okay for there to be expensive handhelds. If the DS fails, then it'll be much harder for the PSP to reach people. Either way, the Game Boy brand name is so strong and synonymous with handhelds, if the next GB comes out in late 2006, both DS and PSP will probably be done for.

Probably.

These two were banned due to widespread baiting and trolling culminating in the posts seen in these threads. This was hardly a "one time incident". Even if you could forgive the ridiculous assertions made by these two on various occassions as "their opinion", it has become pretty clear to me and many others that these two (but especially seismologist) existed for nothing but trolling - and I'm still new here! Posts contain no evidence, topics guaranteed to cause flaming and much more. This was, I wager, the straw that broke the camel's back.

Oh yeah of course it has absolutely NOTHING at all to do with it.
It has to do with utterly idiotic statements such as

I don't really see people being wowed by the PSP, casual gamers who don't give a shit about TEXTURE FILTERING and GFX will think it's the same as DS, except it doesn't have a touch screen, and only has one screen, and doesn't fold in half, and has soulless games.

I think some people here will be surprised when they find out Mario DS rivals the graphics in your average PSP game.

bans are entirely justified imo.

the only reason ppl would say wow to the DS is because with the current monopoly nintendo has on the handheld market this is all we get to see. People will be very impressed with the PSP. That is for sure.

And in my experience many ppl I know have not cared much for the DS. Some kid thinking he's cool gets it and brings it by... um whatever. We took a look... um sure. Well see ya! That's all there was to it.

Man kids these days. DS has some nice features. Touch screen is good but the graphics and display power? terrible. thanks nintendo!

100% popcorn thread. Maybe mods should just delete any topic concerning the portables unless it's for news announcements about new games/accessories

Isn't any different from the pro-PSP trolling all across this thread and the forum in general. Of course they won't be banned, though.

Yes, of course it's the giant pro-PSP conspiracy. Their bannings had nothing to do with their incessant, non-stop trolling/baiting!

What widespread baiting and trolling are you talking about? Doing a quick look at each members posts and the threads they've created I see nothing of the sort. You my friend are the one bringing your opinion into this with no "facts" to back up this statement. Just because someone's opinion differs from yours(and you have a VERY strong opinion of things from the posts I've read of yours) doesn't mean they are "trolling" or "baiting"...

I don't see any trolling or baiting there...

Poor Salmon doesn't even have many Threads or posts under his belt to agree with anything you just typed above. Seismologist hasn't done anything either. Could you please produce FACTS of the trolling and baiting that you claim these members exemplify without talking out your ass please? Otherwise just don't respond.

I'll throw out some more anecdotes to go along with the ones DCharlie and Forgotten wrote up. For the record I don't think I can be accurately accused of bias in one direction or another, as I own a DS and plan to buy a PSP as soon as humanly possible, and am extremely excited by both handhelds.

Over the last week or so, 4 separate female friends of mine have approached me and asked about the DS, knowing that I keep up on all the latest game news and information. None of them have really shown an active interest in other current games - they like games, but they're content with their Super Nintendos and the same 3 or 4 games that they've been playing for years. Only one of them owns a current-generation console, and that's only because her boyfriend bought it for her. All are very, very intrigued by the DS, and so far 2 of the 4 have bought one and the other 2 plan to buy one as soon as they get some money together. The main reason is, of course, the touching. They find it very exciting, unique, and most important, accessible.

I've asked them all about the PSP, and their reactions are pretty similar. They think it looks "pretty" in a sort of distant high-end electronics way, but don't think it looks particularly fun, or like a toy, and are turned off by that. It strikes them as something that will play games that are ill-suited for portable play, the sorts of complex games that turn them off of modern console gaming as well. One of them (unaware, of course, that Halo is an Xbox exclusive game) wondered aloud why anyone would think it fun to play 10 or 15 minutes of Halo 2 on a PSP while riding the bus. Obviously that's not going to be happening, but the sentiment is understood.

Of course, this tiny bit of evidence isn't meant to represent the public at large or to shed any light on which handheld will win this supposed "war," but I found it interesting if nothing else. I'm not one to run around claiming that I can predict how millions of people will react to a product or predict whether or not it will make them go "wow," but at least in the case of these few females - a notoriously difficult audience to reach with video games - a positive reaction to the DS is happening. It supports DCharlie's idea that a whole new crowd could be roped in by it.

I think, uh, the fact that both their posts in this thread were baiting and trolling prove my point entirely seperate from the fruits of their other posts. And if you don't think, at the very least, seismologists posts were often and frequently trolling/baiting then you're simply batshit insane and, as I would say, I wish the best in crazy town

I won't disagree with said banning of some members (Although Salmon is really pushing it).

Just seems like only the Nintendo fans are getting banned. Random_Hajile or whatever his name is by the far the most insidious anti-Nintendo troll, yet he hasn't even been warned.

Both MrParisSM and seismologist banned? I would kiss the mod who did this. The board is a much better place. Thank YOU!

If I buy any new portable it's going to be the DS because it beats the PSP in the "isnt going to be able to be played on the computer after the emulator comes out" factor.
