PSVR Review Thread

Crazy there's a ton of great reviews yet one live stream having issues and some people are like "welp that's VR ruined by Sony" and shit like that...

The Road to VR review seems great. They highlight the tracking can be off sometimes but still highly recommend the headset. They've got extensive VR experience and PSVR stacks up well, especially considering the total cost of entry, and it's even better if you own the console already.

People desperate to see PSVR fail and using one bad setup to berate the device is frustrating.
 
Jeff just said at home he is closer to the 4/5 foot range and has the same same jittery problems.

Brad said he tried 4/6/8 at home and was also experiencing the jittering.

This is a ridiculous level of hyperbole - it happens with every product here. Apple, Microsoft, developers - everyone has a defense force on GAF. Suggesting otherwise hints at an extreme level of bias.

This reminds me of the Uncharted 3 thread were so many people were shitting on a review because they get it less than a 9, AND NONE OF THOSE PEOPLE HAD EVEN PLAYED THE GAME YET.

No it doesn't happen to just Sony products, people lose thier shit over all big things be it Nintendo Sony or ms.

Well, it's worth between 8 and 9 /10 according to reviews so not perfect but pretty great.

There won't be any round 2 before long if nobody buys in round 1 though.

Calibration is not as idiot-proof or well explained as I believe can be currently seen on the GB stream (not that they are idiots, just that the system isn't showing the breaking point well or assists well enough) and from the Road to VR review.

Learning forward for a meter to pass the calibration and then leaning back should bring up a warning and not just start jittering.

Thanks for those. Can I ask you a question? How much do you notice the floating hands when playing? Watching the video they seem to kind of kill immersion for me in a way, but maybe it's not that big of a deal when playing.

Ignore them.

The consensus seems to be pretty good so far, given its critical reception.

Let's see how the average consumer fares when they try it out.

Depends what is meant by setup. In the DF review the set-up was referring to the connecting of the cables and the break-out box.

That is a different step than calibration to me. GB clearly has it set up by the definition.

They just said they did the same thing within 5 feet at some and it's the same thing as 8 on stream.

Most of those reviews seem pretty dang good for something so new.

Can't wait to get mine.
 
The finicky tracking is really problematic if it depends on the environment, especially with a mass consumer device like this.
 
Jesus Christ this thread went just as expected.

As someone who's tried it, reviews so far have been pretty much expected. Pleasantly surprised at Sterling's positive take on Until Dawn RoB. I loved the original, but didn't think this offering was going to bring anything particularly notable to the table. Looks like I gotta add it to the list.

Also, isn't there a thread for the Giant Bomb stream? Could you please take your incessant bickering elsewhere?

In order to mitigate the tracking issues, Sony should include some more extensive calibration tests in order to bettee gauge the appropriate distances and etc.

Seems like a useful feature that they should patch in.

Giant Bomb's opinion has a lot of weight around here. I won't ignore the issues they are having but I will be looking for more streams to see if others are having the same thing. A couple of reviews mentioned tracking issues as well.

I think a mistake should've been pointed out by the system.

If they did the calibration and the system didn't bark at them and they are seeing the jitter then that is on Sony and the calibration system not being correctly tuned.

If they calibrated it and got all green marks and then moved further back from the camera or changing the lighting conditions dramatically then that is on them.

What I'm saying is that it's hard to reconcile the very positive Road to VR review (by all accounts they are probably a relatively acceptable authority on that the topic of VR) with what Jeff Gerstmann is currently seeing on stream with the jitter.
 
Seems the GB crew have left behind the initial jitters/tracking issues and aren't reporting it as a constant issue, in fact through the whole harmonix segement it didn't seem to be an issue at all.

TBH that tallies up with my own 'Heads On' experience at shows. Battlezone played great and had no issues with head tracking, world jittering etc. Farpoint was an awesome standing experience, the aim controller tracking seemed spot on 1-1 and I had blast playing it.

Hoping the move controller tracking holds up in most situations.

And whilst PSVR play area might not be massive its good enough for most things, and suitable for a home environment. Room scale might be awesome, but you're still dragging wires behind you, bumping into things.

For me the comfort element of PSVR was the biggest deal, having the screen suspended infront of you, rather than pinched up against your face as with VIVE/RIFT makes play so much more pleasant.

Say what? It's 1:1 trackable, has plenty of buttons, has a main button and has a shoulder and trigger (for "grabbing" stuff). How is the interface a bad fit for VR?
 
It was quite jittery on the setup I've played too (especially Rush of Blood), and that one was pre-calibrated and I was sitting approximately 2.5 meters from the camera. You just have to learn to ignore it. Head tracking still works perfectly though, it's just the controllers that jitter.

So they have now moved a bit closer to 5 feet.

Jeff is saying that the jittering is a bit better, but that it's still there.

Maybe it's the new camera?

Kotaku, Giant Bomb, Vice Gaming, Tested and I think a few others(?) have mentioned tracking issues. Mentioning issues that a consumer might run into is not "desperate to see PSVR fail". A review thread is not supposed to be an echo chamber. As someone who is interested in PSVR, I would like to know if there are stuff like tracking issues that people have come across.
 
The head tracking works pretty well, which is what matters here.

If you come expecting a Room Scale experience similar to Vive, obviously that's not what you get here.

It's made for being sit. When you start walking, crouching and so on, yes of course you'll get limb tracking limitations pretty soon especially using DS4 instead of PS Move. That's what the few complains are talking about but that's not what PSVR is made for.

It's not a big problem, immersion relies on correct head tracking - which we have here - and most people want to sit when playing their games anyway. I know I do when I come back from work.

You can make great VR games that way (Driveclub, Battlezone, Rigs...)

Then you can buy a Vive and get a full immersion with Room Scale, but it's a lot more expensive and you have to get up and walk constantly. I'm not sure I want that, I want to sit when playing.

I'd like to buy a Vive for my 1070 PC on top of my PSVR but I think in Europe it's something like €1200, that's just not worth it in my opinion, especially since PCVR sales have already stalled and content is just not there and probably won't be due to lack of installed base.

At €400 PSVR is a good entry point. Most importantly, it has content. Hardware is nothing without content.
 
Sounds like if you weren't already sold on this thing it's best to pass on it, at least for now. Can't wait to see how it sells.
 
Read Jeffs comments on twitter and was afraid the PSVR is terrible, glad to see that there are also plenty positive comments. My takeaway is "you get what you pay for".
