PSVR Review Thread

I'm close to cancelling.

Not because of tracking issues, or Gerstmann nearly puking, mainly because I don't think the software is compelling to me outside of Rez and Rush of Blood. The headset is beautiful, and looks really comfy compared to its competitors.

I just don't know what I'd play on it and I'm worried that it'll be a gimmicky experience that Sony abandons. But if it continues with good software, I think I'll pick it up down the line. I think as far as setup goes and ease of use, its the most accessible and Sterling is very correct in this regard. Picking up and playing a game, and sitting down is a nice draw.

I just don't think I'm ready for VR yet.
 
I think I'm going for this for my PS Move: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IIT2AT8/?tag=neogaf0e-20. While it has no reviews, it appears the seller has high reviews on most things they sell. I added up the price of two batteries (and two shipping and handling fees, but maybe they'll only charge me for one since I'd being buy two at once) and it came to just under $25 (without tax), which is still less than me buying one brand new Move controller from Amazon.

This is what I am worried about. The hardware seems fine as a first generation headset but the way Sony dropped a few other pieces of hardware has me worried. Not sure PSVR can be propped up for years by indies and Japanese developers and publishers like the Vita.

Of all the fears to have, I think this is probably the most legitimate one. It's not stopping me, I'm in this for day one, but at the same time, I do have to acknowledge that Sony does have a historical precedent for letting hardware and peripherals stagnate. Hopefully they view PSVR the same way they viewed the PS3 and don't just abandon it, but keep providing support.

But, if they don't, and the games slow to a trickle and eventually become just become smaller indie titles with no more big production games, as happened with the Vita, I can't say I never saw that coming either.
 
Sony will do their part and fully support vr at the beginning just like they did with vita and ps move, you can probably expect at least 2 year of vr support from Sony, if they manage to create a viable and profitable market, they'll continue their support.

But if after their full support, the market is simply not there, than I don't think anyone can blame Sony to cut support. Especially when VR is not their main platform.
 
Ive been so excited for VR. I love my cheap google cardboard VR, it I'm close to canceling my preorder. It just feels like Kinect again which I was excited for but, regretted it no too long after I got it. I feel it's going to get the Vita treatment from a Sony and that the hardware just isn't there yet. But, it's something I still want and really want to play Rigs VR and Driveclub vr...
 
PSVR will get support by default by being the highest selling headset. It will likely sell more than Rift and Vive combined. If devs are making games for those they'd be dumb to not release on PSVR so as long as VR doesn't die off completely there will be software.
 
Tried one of these a few weeks ago at eb games. I definitely enjoyed the experience but I can't justify the price point with it coming off as something that feels a bit early and ahead of itself.

Few years down the road if Sony keeps at it I think it can be incredible.
 
This is definitely the PS1 of vr. And by that, I don't mean it's guaranteed to be a legend with tons of games like the ps1. I mean like when the PS1 first arrived and it was this dark horse and noone knew if it would fly or not.

The flow of software is absolutely the most critical concern. There will have to be not just games, but games that clearly demonstrate what can only be done in vr. I'm throwing caution to the wind and I'll settle for Rigs and Driveclub and look forward to Gran Turismo in the future. Maybe eve valkyrie. But I don't see anything yet that is going to relly light the world on fire. Hopefully that is coming down the line but the window for psvr could close before it ever happens. We cannot know for sure.
 
I am jumping in for sure. I know this is risky as there may be a situation that Sony cuts support in future. But this is a two way relationship. We need to support new technology so it remains a viable investment for the other party so that they support this going forward. It has been a huge risk on Sony's part to introduce something like this, so I think the enthusiast community should also take some risk on their part in embracing it.
Compared to Move and Vita, this has to be a big investment on Sony's part so this gives me reason to believe that they won't cut support so easily. Also the list of 80 games coming to VR seems to be good to start with.

Make sure to post impressions if you get the one without reviews. I've got some Move controllers I haven't used in ages so I don't really know how well it'll hold a charge

I think all of the games will be available digitally. With some getting physical release. That's the impression I got from reading the launch day list thread.

Hold out a bit longer. RIGS impressions should be in the next batch of feedback, i suspect. Same with EVE Valkyrie. I paid for mine and i have reservations, too. Resell should be quick if you don't like it. Honestly, my gut still tells me that the best thing for VR currently is the Gear VR. Down the line? If Samsung puts out their promised standalone mobile VR unit, this will be the game changer.

This is the REAL game changer, I think.
 
Has much been mentioned regarding minimum distance? I'm wondering if 1-2 metres from the camera is fine. Richard from Digital Foundry looked to be about 1 and a half metres away and his experience was fine.
 
I just don't trust Sony to continue to support the platform in a meaningful way if it doesn't yield returns like Sony wants. They're expecting Millions of VR headset sales, I don't think they're getting there. And if software sales are middling then they will just leave it to the Indie studios and wait it out until VR adoption is higher.

PC community/dev's are too important to VR IMO to not include them in your platform.

Is Sony expecting millions of sales? Or is that just Sony fans?

We know pre-orders sold out, so it seems sales are at least meeting Sony's expectations, but we don't have any numbers to make a judgement on how big that demand is yet. Particularly in relation to that 40m+ PS4 user base.

If anything, the way they closed the initial preorderss so soon and reopened months after seem to implied they had rather low expectation and struggled to keep up with the production.

It's only some random analysts who have been throwing crazy figures around.

Battery replacement looks easier than the DS4 (which is really easy once you learn how to replace The Deadly Spring after it pinged out) and it's what I was going to do if mine didn't charge.

We do know that Andrew House expected 2mn Vive, OR and PSVR sets shipped by the end of 2016. We also know that Vive and especially OR are still far below 250.000 units LTD. And we know from Shu that Sony underestimated the demand for PSVR. And a fellow gaffer (CosmicQueso, if I remember right) indicated that delivery problems won't be solved before late Q1/17.

So, in short, I'd be surprised if Sony has less than 1mn headsets ready for 2016 (global scale).
 
How exactly are old PS Moves experiencing so many battery issues? Mine are from around launch, and they have spent extended amounts of time stored, not being used.

Whipped 'em out yesterday to play some Time Crisis 4 and they still charge to three bars just fine, everything worked as it should battery-wise.
 
I've looked at like 5,6 reviews and none of them even mention the cinematic mode, which is actually of interest to me. I thought I could use this as a display of games if the TV is being used but I have no idea if this is well done and worth the investment (of course I wouldn't buy it just for that, but it is certainly added value).

I think some batteries just tend to lose the ability to charge anymore over a period of time. Especially if I just them down to nothing. Same thing happened with my ds3 battery as my main console last gen was the 360 and I rarely used my ps3 except for exclusives. It was almost never charged. Except the few times a year I picked up a Sony first party game.

Have people had success being from any of these third party sellers on Amazon?

I think we can say with some certainty that you will not get AAA VR games. They take years to develop so you will only start to see announcements now (Resi 7) for release in the future. They have every chance of delay, cancellation or cutting VR support before release. On all levels VR is diametrically at odds with AAA aims or principles (install base, performance requirements, graphics can't be face-melting) so you will naturally get 90% indie or smaller games on VR in gen 1.

As people have said we are back to the ps1 time for devs; if this gets us more than "fifa-madden-bangshooter 23" then I'm excited for it!

I think everyone that doubts that support will be there and citing previous peripherals doesn't understand that stuff like Move, PS Eye, etc - can't offer compelling NEW experiences like VR can.

You legitimately cannot compare the two.

If you want to create metrics to show support, just look at the amount of studios behind VR that are making new games and experiences NOW vs any previous peripherals entries.

This is something that can change the gaming landscape and developers are rightfully curious and on board with VR. It allows them to stretch their creativity even further.

This is definitely not "oh cool I can wave my hand in front of a fish tank" stuff which had extremely limited use in all scenarios. This CHANGES the way we play and experience content unlike any other devices before it.

Rift, Vive, PSVR - new ways to engage and engage deeper than before. This isn't something that will be ignored moving forward.

If it were a new peripheral like a glove or something else that doesn't really change the way you experience games, sure, there's limited use to that style of peripheral. But VR is on a whole new level.

Yeah mostly positive. But there are a few issues I had with his review. One is that he stated it's a positive that he can just play sitting down with a DS4, he liked that it wasnt room scale because the room scale stuff is hard for him to play. That is simply a personal preference that most people don't agree with. Given the space, it seems like room scale is what most people like about VR.
Also he said the vive made him sick, which again seems like he is the outlier there.

Still his review on early Wednesday was my first glimmer of hope after hearing GBs impressions. Then after PS I love you, and some other publications high praise of it, I feel pretty confident with the product I'm getting.

For what I've seen the Giant Bomb stream was also an outlier, so I'm feeling positive, but I wouldn't put to much weight in PS I love you, the name alone should tell you what their general opinion of Playstation products is overly masturbatory

Don't take GAF so seriously, as this happens all of the time. A small problem happens with hardware, everyone blows it out of proportion and people cancel over petty shit. It's like a Soap Opera for gamers. I will happily be in line launch day getting my headset.

There is no doubt that VR is a game changer when it comes to interacting with games and giving people a sense of immersion, but it's still a business for devs and publishers and if there isn't money to be made because people aren't buying games the support will start to wane. PSVR being he most commercial and cheapest headset makes me wonder if you'll see people do what they did with the Wii. Buy it, pick up a couple of games at launch, and then not really buy much more software because they already have a few mini game collections that are fun in short bursts and are cool to show off the headset to friends.

lol if there is one thing Greg and Colin do is give Sony shit when they deserve it and sometimes when they dont (PSpro reveal misinformation)

After watching Giant Bomb and Tested, I'm not that into it anymore for some reason. Nausea has always been my main concern and if there's even a remote possibility, I won't invest 500 € to a technology with such a risks - especially since there's been no possibilities to test PSVR around me without driving 300 km. Also, I don't know what I was expecting but these games don't make me to want to play them at all.

Maybe Magic Leap is my next step unless something extraordinary happens to VR in a few years.
