Publisher Activision and developer Raven Software have finally released a new information update and one new screenshot for Quake 4, the next game in the well-known shooter series. The update includes more details on the "Stroggs," the monstrous aliens that players originally encountered in 1997's Quake II. According to the new information provided by Raven Software project lead Eric Biessman, the alien aggressors will return in Quake 4 in a full-scale war between a squadron of soldiers:

"Quake 4 Updated Info

Earth is under siege by an alien race. The Strogg are cybernetic warriors--a mechanical frame and decaying body parts stabilized by flesh consumed in a systematic annihilation of other species and civilizations. In a desperate attempt to survive a Strogg attack on Earth, an armada of Earth's finest warriors is sent to take the battle to the Strogg home planet. Earth's initial assault force is nearly annihilated immediately, but one marine manages to infiltrate the base, bring down their planetary defense systems, and kill the Strogg's collective brain and leader--the Makron. Earth assumed the destruction of the Makron would end it all, but it didn't.

That's where Quake II leaves off and Quake 4 begins.

The Strogg are quickly regrouping. However, with the Strogg's planetary defenses still destroyed, Earth's forces can deliver a full and final assault. This time, you're not alone. You are Matthew Kane, an elite member of Rhino Squad, and part of Earth's next invasion wave. An army of soldiers are fighting with you and an arsenal of weapons and vehicles are at your disposal in this heroic and epic battle between worlds."

Quake 4 has been in development for some time at Raven Software, a longtime collaborator with Activision and id Software on such games as Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and the Soldier of Fortune series. No official release date has been confirmed at this time.

The game could look like Halo for all I care. All I want is more Strogg butt kicking action, but in the the name "Quake 4" make me horny.

Speaking of, I really hope they bring back the Iron Maiden and Icarus.

Oh Quake 2 how I use to love thee. ID properties use to be so damn flawless. They will never gain their multiplayer title from Epic concentrating on how to push the plastic look to the next level.

How many companies are licensing the Doom 3 engine compared to the Quake 2 and 3 engines? If I were a developer I would go with the most vesatile engines like HL2 and UC3 and not the best looking one (matter of perception of course).

Edit: Raven did do a great job on RTCW. But I just can't see them doing as much with this license especially with the engine they are using.

I'll start. Raven didn't make RTCW, Grey Matter did.

looks fucking awful, like it's made of plastic..

what's with these cliched robot/human hybrid designs that keep popping up

i cant believe the apathy towards this game, this is easily my most anticipated game at e3,although i have almost zero faith in raven. If they get it right i'll be playing this for another 6 years, just like im still playing quake3 6 years after its 1999 test launch.I really hope they capture the essence of the quake series and dont dilute it into some slow paced yawn fest, the doom3 engine is really critical,no one that i know cares about the single player experience, there is absolutely no doubt the single player experience will pale compared to half life 2,i just hope raven can make the multiplayer work online,if they do personally it will eclipse every other game for me,if not,wow i cant express my disappointment.

I just hope Raven delivers on their promise of "Quake 3 but prettier" for the multiplayer.

Quake 3 is the greatest deathmatch FPS out there.

I hope that Q4 on 360 brings back the spirit of my Q2 OGL experience. The next big console clan game? Of course with the headset you don't have to bind keys :) "I need ammo" etc...

The plastic look is caused by the specular lighting. Seems like almost every game that uses it applies the same amount of shininess all over the model. I don't know if this is a technical limitation or what, but they need to adjust it so only things that need to be shiny are shiny (not skin!).

My english is very poor to explain this, But isn't supposed that the textures that use this is with the purpose of simulate polygons (using grayscale) hence you will see that the light affects the object with more details than a flat texture.
I'm telling this because with Blender there is a logical operator called "XOR" when you use it over a texture the darkest colors will become more like polygons and in the end the object will lock a bit more shiny but much more realistic and Blender by default doesn't aply a global specular lightning, I'm sure that I tried that with a brick texture over a very simple castle model, but the XOR operator (bump-mapping) makesa lotof different

Honestly speaking..... the shinyness is from bad texturing.... that's what it comes down to....

It can be kinda hard to get right, but with enough time, there should not be a reason for a normal mapped model to be shinning like the sun... But that's just experience talking right there....

Because i have seen some stuff using the doom 3 engine, that blows this crap away... the characters actually look good, and not like this trash....

id Software and this whole new darkness shit. i hate it. brighten the fucking game up already. your atmoshpere is shit and making it dark to try to make it "scary" is not working. that would require at least some good mood and atmoshpere already and this doesn't have it.

i'm tired of these dark ass games trying to set mood or create a gameplay dynamic (ie: splinter cell, doom 3, etc.) which dont. all they do is hide the pretty graphics, make me strain, and make me jack my brightness all the way up just so i can fucking see. yes i know Splinter Cell has nightvision, but that makes the graphics all green and shit looking.

Now? Yes. Next gen? Hell no (at least for a year).

Quake 4 is this-gen game coming in 2-3 months.
You know there will be lots of people enjoying this game on their PCs and not whining about differences between Xbox2 and PC and waiting for a port.

I'll be playing you can wait. (generally speaking, not you Pimbaa).

The series has never attempted to be realistic in any way shape or form. They're just fun games, with a distinct "id" style. It's good to see the Quake series focusing on Single Player again. Quake II was awesome.
