Quest 2 and 3 outsold PSVR 2 on Amazon over the Holiday Season

Judging by sales volume on Amazon, Quest 2 & Quest 3 massively outsold PSVR 2 during the 2023 holiday season.

Tracking Quest 2, Quest 3, and PSVR 2 sales volume on Amazon US gives strong evidence that Quest headsets did quite well this holiday season, while PSVR 2 saw concerningly low sales. Looking at the numbers over the course of the holiday season shows that for every 1 unit of PSVR 2 sold, Quest sold more than 30 units.

The data compares all capacity variants of Quest 2 & Quest 3 against the standard PSVR 2 retail box and the PSVR 2 + Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle. The original PSVR would be counted but it has been discontinued. No refurbished units were counted.

We can also compare the trend over time by looking at PSVR 2 sales figures as a baseline compared to Quest 2 & Quest 3 sales.

psvr-2-holiday-2023-sales-units-2-2.png

Based on the data we’ve collected we can see that Quest had a pretty good holiday season with Meta selling at least 320,000 headsets on Amazon US alone between November 16th and January 16th. On the other hand, PSVR 2 sold only around 10,500 on Amazon US during that time.

That’s a concerningly low figure for PSVR 2, especially considering that the holiday season tends to be the best selling period for VR headsets. Even if Sony managed to sell PSVR 2 units at the same rate as this holiday for the entire year, it still wouldn’t even be 1/3 of the Quest units sold on Amazon US during this holiday period alone.

Fuck me. That's an absolute massacre.

3.2 percent of sales. They should have made it pcvr compatible and it probably needed to be wireless.
If it was pcvr compatible I think that would have helped. I have a quest 3 and a psvr2 that I use for gran turismo and basically nothing else. If it worked on pc though, I would absolutely use it on pc for sim type games where wireless wouldn’t help much. The HDR and oled screen are genuinely pretty dang good.

If I could take a psvr2 and put quest 3 lenses on it, maaaan that would be a good headset.

Well the makes sense. I mean 2 months after launch I haven't heard of ONE AAA game or promotion of the device. Two generations they can't make it happen I think they are on the verge of losing customer faith for VR. I know im mad I bought it.

Not a single game announced since the pre-launch reveal, which are all now available. They've barely mentioned the device at all since release.

I traded in the PSVR2 during the holidays. :( I Had both Quest 3 and PSVR 2 for a while to compare them.
Quest 3 is better, in almost all metrics.
Optics, lenses, clarity, portability, connect ability with PC.
NO wires as standalone. AR and a community online to play games with other people. (If you can stand that sort of thing)

I gave the controllers as the main advantage of the PSVR2. They just track better than the Quest 3.
The PSVR2 also had eye tracking that never really got used much. But worked wonders when it was used.

Sony sent the PSVR2 out to die.

I feel sorry for anyone that bought it.
No need to feel sorry for us. Most of us who bought it are still enjoying it in the OT. We get better looking Quest games and some nice extras like Resident Evil and GT7. Can't complain really even if Quest outsold it considerably. having said that I'm still waiting for a Asgard's Wrath 2 announcement of some kind.

Not surprising at all. Who wants VR where you have to connect it to a home console with a TV? Yes, PSVR2 I'm sure is fantastic etc etc if you're willing to go through the hassle of having a console to use with it. Meanwhile, I love using my Quest 3. I grab it, fling it on my head and away I go. It's superb. No tethered connection is the only way.

Is not really a surprise, you still need a PS5 to use the VR2 and the latter is more expensive than the Quest 2 and 3.

Sony hasn't released any notable VR2 games lately and it seems that it will let it die, too bad.

The only positive thing about this is that they are not losing money for every unit sold as opposed to the Quest devices.

VR’s only mainstream viability is completely self-contained headsets. Sony should pivot PSVR to a standalone system instead of an add-on.

But they may already be throwing in the towel at this point.

Being able to go outside and draw out a huge 25ft x 25ft guardian is really awesome. PSVR2 is a great kit for the money if you already own a PS5, but it is a completely different beast from Quest. There are many games that you can actually physically walk through the world through using the teleport for large movements, then walk around to explore the environment. Works really well with Quest version of RE4, my neighbors probably think I'm nuts when I'm battling a horde of zombies.

I really hope not, but something needs to change and fast. Without users, devs are not going to invest in the platform which will just compound the issue.

If you mean a port of the game, I'm not sure you'll get one: Asgard's Wrath 2 is a Facebook first party developed game.

Be warned here comes the PSVR fanboys telling you its not in danger and how amazing the product is and all the games that are coming out...

Looking to pick up a Quest 3 and to be fair to PSVR2 it is a good piece of hardware but no games and the wire teather ruins it for me.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Can't say I'm surprised. Feels like Sony is treating PSVR2 like a red-headed step child.

It certainly feels that way...I can't work out why they even bothered making it
To sell games and that's what a lot of people are ignoring. The quest will continue to outsell PSVR2 but a lot of Quest owners aren't necessarily buying it for hardcore gaming in the first place. So it's better to look at whether its worth it for publishers with game sales. The advantage that PSVR2 has there is that it specialises in gaming only so it has that audience. PSVR2 had RE4 release as an exclusive for it just last month in December. Quest development is mostly on Unity and UE, I don't think PSVR will have any issue with support and in this year it's got the majority of quest ports. It will likely continue to get the higher fidelity quest ports plus the games that don't run on quest standalone like RE4, or 8. This may change in the next few years as games might become increasingly ARM/phone-centric.

I like them both for different reasons. If I am playing something in VR and I want to focus and close myself I find the PSVR2 better for that. I think Quest is fantastic for lighter games like Puzzling Places and other games I want to play in AR. Even if Sony kills VR after the PSVR2, both have a place in my house this gen. No regrets with either purchase.

Idiot Sony killing their own VR headset by restricting it to single locked platform.
again because they probably weren't making a huge markup on hardware anyway so the incentive is still and always will be VR game sales on the store. As long as they continue to court developers like they have already PSVR will be fine.

If PSVR2 wasn't locked to PS5, I'd buy it and actually buy games on their store. But since it is locked, I am never gonna buy it and neither those games.

Using Quest 2 for PCVR is really good value. I have a Quest 2 and PSVR2 and I don't think the PSVR2 is some massive step up compared to me running my Quest 2 on high settings with my 3080 PC. I actually prefer the screen door effect on the Quest 2 over the PSVR2 dirty screen effect lol. My quest 2 with my aftermarket strap is much more comfortable and I'm using it wireless. I will probably hold off until the next gen round of headsets come out to upgrade for PCVR, either Quest 4 or something else.

So you would buy games on their store but want to use it on PC? why wouldn't you just get the PC version of games in that case as your preferred platform?

They've already said that PSVR much like all VR headsets out there isn't going to have exclusive after exclusive and will be driven mostly by third party indie studios. VR is very much a multiplatform market because it's collectively small. I gather you're more likely to just buy multiplatform games on PC if PC support is what's important to you, or am I wrong on this?

The only way I see it happening is if they launch their own PC store to sell multiplatform games there too or if they pivot and go all in on first party VR games which wouldn't be very wise for most publishers. Who knows maybe it might happen but for now PSVR2 is a way to sell VR games for those who play on PS5.

Yes, Sony could easily make PC version of PSN and sell their VR (or even nonVR) games there and get 100%.
Or I could buy exclusives for PS5, while still use PSVR2 for PC stuff as well.

Point is, when it is locked to PS5, there is zero reason to buy it, because I need PC headset too (and it is more important) and I am not gonna buy two headsets. If PSVR2 was not locked, I could just get that and it would cover everything. Oh well, instead Sony gets 3% of the market. Good luck with that.

One is a standalone device while the other requires a $399 - $499 console .

Also when was the last time Sony or any devs gave us a reason to even pickup PSVR2?

These are fake made up numbers, you can't know how many units of a product have been sold in Amazon.

Which means you can't compare the proportion between two.

You can only know if a product sold more than other looking at the sales ranking of that Amazon category.

The point is that I don't think profit from just exclusives you buy are going to cut it when all the VR platforms are not releasing many, because the VR market is so small that an exclusive is very limiting to sales so your purchases are going to be in another store.

I see where you're coming from but for them this wouldn't be worth it when you're hardly going to buy any games in their store. Perhaps when the headset hardware itself is more profitable it would make sense to offer PC compatibility but even then Facebook/Meta would undercut them so hard taking losses like they have that it would be futile. It is what it is. It's for PS5 players to be able to get all the multiplatform VR games releasing and the rare exclusive here or there that enticed them to the ecosystem.

I would love PC support for my PSVR2 but it isn’t as simple as people imply. Sony has no store on PC so they would make no money back on selling the device to PC only users. More importantly, PSVR2 won’t work on newer Nvidia GPUs and most newer AMD GPUs without an expensive, seemingly no longer produced, adapter.

I think the obvious concern is the ability to court devs with less than a million sold in over a year on the market, with no obvious signs of gaining momentum. In saying that, it seems to require less of an investment to make a stand out VR title.

In a perfect world, Sony cuts production costs to get the unit down to $350 and purchases rights to a "killer app" for an enticing bundle. In this perfect world, the Fresnel lenses get a slight rework to increase the sweetspot as well. I can't tell you how many times I have added a PSVR2 and PS5 to my cart to later remove them. One day, the price will be right and I'll finally take the plunge.

Edit: In all honestly, I believe my $350 price point mentioned is unattainable with the tech they are using.
