Question about next gen consoles...

According to rumors both Sony and Microsoft won't have a HDD in their next-gen box because of costs issues. Well my question is will these consoles be able to handle games like Battlefield 1942/BF Vietnam or Far Cry ?

Will Blu Ray and HDVD be able emulate a hard drive? Will “long range” (Far Cry/BF games) gameplay be possible or will it be like “The End” boss fight in MGS3 (large maps broken into chunks)?!

edit:
I am only talking about large map sizes, this thread has nothing to do with graphical capablilities of the next gen systems.

They'll be powerful enough to stream huge areas without loading times, much bigger than the Battlefield maps. And especially Blu-Ray is going to have enough place for the needed textures.

That's a matter of hardware power, not the space. The next gen consoles will allow a bigger draw distance with less pop-up in streaming games.

little tweak...

That said, I wonder if they're even thinking about MMO games.

considering the amazing bus speeds we're talking about, it would be entirely possible to mask a small loading time with a "bringing the scope up to the eye" animation.

I have never played a MMO so I don't know how they work. But I think a HDD is definitely a requirement for them.

Why do people assume that a hard disk drive is the only way a dev can stream data? There are other ways to get the same results.
