Question to otakus. Where did this weird posture trend come from?

There is this pose that I see frequently in Japanese media where woman stand with inward pointing knees and feet. The pose is so odd I have to ask where this originated from and if there are any specific reasons why it became so popular.

I dunno about other countries but it's definitely a Japanese thing. I guess it's part of being "kawaii". Weird feet/leg poses for girls seem to be common here. Every day during my commute I see so many women walking pigeon-toed. In high heels. It looks uncomfortable.

i always thought it was because of the wayt they sit but the kimono thing makes sense too on the link^^

on the other hand i believe now should probably be on purpose so sempai notice me

What about that pose where a guy's crotch is as forward as it could possibly be while standing straight up? Doesn't that hurt?

Pointing your feet together when you stand is a feminine pose apparently.

In real life it looks kinda like someone is mentally impaired to me.

In Dragons Dogma the feminine stance option is pigeon-toed lol.

The pigeon toe might not sound very glamorous, but it's a sure-fire way to make your legs look leaner and your feet look smaller. A red carpet tactic employed by celebrities such as Paris Hilton, who has US size 11 feet, the look merely requires you to turn your toes inwards when you pose. If it's good enough for the fashionistas on street-style blogs, then it's certainly good enough for us.

More of a fashion thing than anything

You can see plenty of examples of it on this site: lookbook.nu

Yeah I have the opposite problem where I stand with my feet pointed outwards. Feels good being an alpha male.

I think it comes from the Japanese ideal of a submissive woman.
Women walking or sitting (seiza, or what we call kneeling) while wearing a kimono are required to have their toes pointed inwards.

Thanks for some of the insight. I was wondering if it has gotten to the point where some women actually hold such an uncomfortable looking posture like that.

Even knowing that it is true it still is kind of unnerving.

She looks like Terriermon...

btw DO NOT try to look up the name of digimon you can't remember in search engines with safe search off. Jesus Christ people.

I am equally confused on why animes like to show such a condition, maybe raise awareness? :P

Pigeon toe seems to mostly happen in children under 2 years of age, but it can happen in adults?

Treatment

Most of these conditions are self-correcting during childhood. In the worst cases surgery may be needed.[1] Most of the time this involves lengthening the achilles tendon. Less severe treatment options for pigeon toe include keeping a child from crossing his or her legs, use of corrective shoes and casting of the foot and lower legs, which is normally done before the child reaches 12 months of age or older.[6]

If the pigeon toe is mild and close to the center, treatment may not be necessary. Ballet has been used as a treatment for mild cases. Dance exercises can help to bend the legs outward.

Or it could be just a fashion thing, huh.

Girls point their toes inward when they take photos to look cute. It's a trend that started in Japan but a lot of fashion-y girls in the west do it too now

to add: I do think pigeon-toe, the actual medical condition, is more common in Japan and may have been the original cause of the trend. I've heard theories that it would be a desirable trait because of the way traditional Japanese clothing restricts your leg movement, so it's just been passed down through genetics.

I thought this was going to be about how her hips were popped and I was going to direct you to the 1990s.

But the pigeon toe thing is pretty skeeves, you are right.

Actually it's surprising how you can find this outside of Japan too. I don't know if it's intentional or not, but here at my university a lot of the girls also have this posture.

My significant other actually does the same thing without even realizing it, we've told her in the past that it can hurt her legs but she never seems to actually catch herself doing it.

EDIT: I should note that it's not even close to the level of pigeon toes that you see in Japan and Anime tho.

I can't say I've ever done this. Looks sort of uncomfortable, but so are high heels... -.-

Can confirm. I've dated my fair share of women that insist on wearing high heels in corporate work. Says it makes short women look taller and imposing, plus the sound of the heel click is supposed to be an imposing sound additionally. Big downside is that they can kill your feet and are super difficult to walk in.

I wish I knew what the deal was with the weird feminine stance that is popular in anime and with models. I know it's not bow legged. That's something completely different.

Lots of Japanese girls walk like that for some reason.
I'm not sure if it doesn't have something to do with wearing completely flat shoes, I was told that originates a tendency to angle your feet inwards when you walk.

I kind of do this.. but it's not on purpose. My hips don't go out like that on the side, but my toes/feet are kind of inwards when I stand normally. It causes my shoes to become uneven on the sides because I lean more on my heel. I didn't realize until I had to stop using a pair of shoes because they were tilting after using them so much.

But girls who do it on purpose do it for youthfulness, like SonicMegaDrive wrote. It shows a sense of innocence too (kind of like why Japanese men love pink nipples, but that's another story).

Men are turned on by wobbly legged newly born baby giraffes. Women being more socially keen then men know this and exploit this. Even in 2D form.

I think you nailed it! I remember my parents telling me at one point that flat shoes do this to you. It also damages your hips too. My gf wears a lot of flat shoes too, so I think you're onto something

Do you often wear completely flat shoes??

...wut?

Nope, almost never. I also switch between 2-3 pair of shoes.

You know, I tried to play TERA but had to give it up solely because Elin's run animation was pissing me off.

Well there goes that theory hahah. I guess it just comes more naturally to some people.

Why didn't you try using other races? I think there were some that ran with less swaying
