I just don't understand where the flat Earth people come from at all.
Setting aside all rational logic, lets say for a second that they're right. The Earth is flat and there's a big conspiracy to cover it all up.... What exactly is the benefit to the Government or whoever of doing this? What is the actual problem that a round Earth causes and a flat Earth would fix?

There's a theory that basically goes that someone of, let's say, less-than-average intelligence is duped a number of times, decides they don't want that to keep happening, but the only real method they have to guard against that is to be skeptical of everything. So they get taken advantage of less often, but the trade off is that they also start to doubt people and things that aren't trying to deceive them. It's like a defense mechanism run amok, and it leads to believing things like flat earth, because under that kind of thinking something that everyone agrees is true feels more likely to be false, because obviously everyone is trying to fool you.
It's a cognitive trap people can fall into simply by trying to guard against others taking advantage of them. It spirals out of control.
Nothing in that tweet indicates she thinks the solar system is the galaxy.

Many years ago I got right into conspiracies. Not believing them or anything just reading about all the famous ones like the Moon Landing hoax, Faux Paul, Bigfoot, Aliens but despite those being silly I always thought that the flat earth theory was the dumbest of all maybe only trumped by the Hollow Moon. It amazes me that this many years later flat earth has actually gained a significant following. So strange.

I mean half the people mentioned in the op as believing that the earth is flat are also holocaust deniers, it's probably a bit more worrisome than you're making it out to be.
I tried to watch a flat earther video once and it's honestly fascinating. Insane, but fascinating. I don't remember too well, but I think it included:
- The Earth used to be full of forests the size of redwoods, but they all were all cut/burned down. Modern forests aren't really forests
- There was an age where everything was made out of metal. Fossils are actually from this era, fossilization is a myth
- Mesa / butte are actually the trunks of giant metal trees
- The continents are actually a very small amount of the earth's landmass

They have (an incredibly stupid and/or naive) answer for absolutely any question you can think of. Pilots are in on it, so they intentionally fly the sub optimal routes one way, as to make it appear that plane rides are shorter the other way. They've figured it all out.
Except maybe the ship on the horizon. That seems to stump them, as the best answer I've read to that is "you think you would see that because you've heard it so many times, but it doesn't actually happen".

Which government? All of them? Many countries have been to space. So they'd all have to be conspiring together? The mental gymnastics needed for this are mind boggling.
(Same thing goes for UFOs as well. "It's a government cover-up!" as if their country is the only one the aliens would visit)

Yeah, all the governments and companies are in on it. It's an incredibly coordinated effort that somehow only Google and other search engines escaped out of, so they freely let anyone search for and see the unfiltered proofs about Flat Earth.
