I just don't see the point to playing the card game when you can play one of the games on GB/GBA/DS/3DS. To each there own I guess...

A $100,000 for a piece of paper? Just take a picture of it and get a high quality print and spend the rest on a new car.

Couldn't one say the same thing about the Mona Lisa?

Sure, collecting isn't for everyone, but, I don't see what's so hard to understand about it.

Wow so Pokemon cards are more valueable than M:tg cards? I mean the most valuable Mtg card is only worth a few thousand (that Black lotus that's getting bent in the one pic). $100k is a bit much for this card but it's been sold for $10-20k before.

You can't really print the Mona Lisa. You could try re-painting it but it would lack the passion the original artist had for it.

six of them versus a few thousand

I remember I got a Charizard card in an ordinary pack of Pokemon cards as a kid. It was like the childhood version of winning the lottery. Still have it in mint condition, but too afraid to sell it on eBay.

And "the passion the original artist had for it" makes it beyond price?

Yes, I realize the value of the Mona Lisa, it's not like I'm casting off da Vinci or something, but, the point is, that matters to some people, and doesn't to others. People pay for what matters to them.

I remember back when people were going crazy over that one Charizard card and paying ridiculous amounts for it.

not $20,000 levels of ridiculous but still a lot

I remember those cards being sold at hobby shops for about 40-70 dollars. I had several of them but only because I knew someone who could order me a entire box of pokemon cards at wholesale price. Everyone at school was more impressed with my Zapdos, Moltres and Articuno.

Pretty surprised this is actually up for sale. I think there's only like 5 of them in existence or something like that.

That feel of not being rich. I'd buy it and keep it on a work desk or something. That's a hell of a conversation piece.

"Oh, is that a Pokemon card? I used to love Pokemon!"
"Uh excuse me sir. This is a very rare card. It's worth more than what you earn in a year!"
*your patron walks out*
*you pick up the card and whisper to it "soooonnn"

I wish I was anywhere near my MtG cards so I could test, but I'm pretty sure the cards don't exactly like being bent like that. Resulting in cards being all kinds of crooked and bent.

Don't know about the way old, ye olde if you might, cards react. I only started playing when Revised was around and only did play until Ice Age. Or rather, I collected cards, not really played them.

That picture is pretty much perfect for 'some men just want to watch the world burn' caption :p

This brings back memories of primary school, I was the only kid with a base set Charizard. Then my Uncle brought my back loads of cards from a business trip in the US, including the first two promo Mew cards (one holofoil, one not). I loved my short lived popularity.

There are no foreign black lotus. It's unlimited. They used to bend cards back in the day because there was a huge card forgery ring for black lotus and moxes and the only way to tell the difference was to bend it. The quality of the fakes caused it to crease easily.

Kind of sucks that the only way to check authenticity is to permanently damage the card =(.
