Raspberry Pi Gaming thread - Cheap emulation and gaming projects

Currently have a Pi3 running OpenELEC that will soon become redundant; I can then repurpose it as a RetroPIE.. I really can't wait to be a part of this party. Just a couple of months to go..

What settings are you using with the new n64 emulator? I'm still not getting a playable framerate with the standard mupen64-emulator. Glide-one works better but not great.

My Canakit just arrived :D

Eager to test my Pi.

Just some questions, if I plan to play mostly NeoGeo and CPS games am I good with Retropie? What about PS1 games? My dad misses Ace Combat and our PS1 doesn't work anymore :/
And my last question, do I need to use Retropie as OS or can I use it as "executable"? I'm new to Linux, etc so I don't really know exactly how much stuff works.

All those systems work fine on a Pi 3. Got all of those set up myself.

Ive had my raspberry pi 3 for about 3 weeks now, trying to get something setup along of running raspbian, and having retropie and kodi running on it. However, Im just running into one thing or another that eventually, either intentionally or unintentionally, has me wiping everything.

At this point, not concerned with the victory of a job well done of doing it myself, just want it up and running. Im very amateurish with this, so this may or may not be a thing, but is there an image I can throw on my SD card that would just set up what Im looking for where someone has already went through and ironed out the kinks?

What's the compatibility ratio on the new n64 update?

I'm still having some of the graphical glitches from before the update, but the games are FAR more playable now. I was playing Goldeneye and Perfect Dark with no issues. I also tried Majora's Mask with no problems. Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire is playable for the most part now. If too many AT-AT or AT-STs get on the screen at once it slows down, but that's about it. It works!

Conker still had issues. Jet Force Gemini is playable but still has those screen flickers.

Also, you DO NOT have to overclock. This is significant for most Raspberry Pi owners.

Man, if there was ever a time for a Raspberry Pi 4, I think that this would solve a lot of issues.

Can some kind soul please spell out for me how to upgrade the 64 emulator and what settings you're using to get the N64 games running reasonably well?

I'm using GoldenEye as my "test" game and absolutely cannot get it running worth a shit.

Select RetroPie-Setup in the RetroPie menu. Update the script first (you'll see the option there when you first load up RetroPie-Setup). Then, pick "Manage Packages", then "Manage Main Packages", then "Mupen64Plus", and it will update for you. Easy as that!

You won't have problems running Goldeneye after this update.

Thanks. Sorry to be a pain, can you let me know which version you're using:

lr-mupen64plus
mupen64plus-gles2n64
mupen64plus-gles2rice
mupen64plus-GLideN64
mupen64plus-videocore

Also, what video output mode (CEA 1, 2...DMT 4, 5...)?

I'm trying a variety of settings to no avail. Really appreciate the help!

I use mupen64plus-GlideN64 as the default, but rice is good for games that don't work well with GlideN64. You'll almost never want to use anything libretro (lr-mupen64plus) as the Pi just can't handle it well.

Since the update, it doesn't seem to matter what video mode or frame buffer you use. I do keep it native personally, so that would be CEA-1 and the frame buffer of 320x240.

hey all jsut got my rasp pi3 kit a few weeks ago, slowly getting my roms up to speed. enjoying it so far.

was wondering if there is a way to config my controller (ps3) on a per system basis. right now I have the ps3 confgured to the general emulationstation set up, but I'd like my button layout to be different between for ex. my genesis and my snes.

was also wondering how to best go about optimizing the roms. not sure why but some games have assets flickering/flashing or the game is lagging/playing slowly. Are there optino tweaks I have to make on a per game basis?

another thing I need to do is get a blue keyboard/mouse so I can dosbox/scumm from the couch. i'm pretty sure i've seen some recs. just browsing this thread so I'll double check that.

my only quip so far is that I can't find a menu or anything for savestates etc. I know I can press like select and R1 to save i believe, i just need to keep a sticky note around till I commit it to memory

In game press Select+X and you can manage various options including save states. You can also remap buttons in this menu.

Finally trying to do some PSX games and I need some help.

Is there any way to combine all the bin, cue, tracks, different discs into one file? Otherwise the same game is listed 2-5 times in the Emulation Station list.

Edit the es_systems.cfg file. Remove the .bin extension and then you will only see the .cue files as your games.

My goldeneye is still having stuttering issues even after the update. What am I doing wrong? I was using mupen64plus glide 64 and did that frame buffer too.

So here's a dumb question. How do you update individual emulators? It's all done through Retroarch...do you update the cores?

Yep. You just update the individual cores through the Retropie menu > Retropie Setup Script.

Just update the setup script from that menu (always do this first to make sure it pulls down the latest versions of emulators), and then update individual packages from binary (e.g. lbr-fba-next, lbr-snes9x-next...etc.).

Rad! Thanks!

After doing that (I doubt it's related) now all of my emulators have terrible audio quality. Like it's all scratchy and static sounding. I wonder what happened....

When I was testing, my controller lost connection, now I can't get it to reconnect. Geez.

I have two Raspberry Pis and both of them have RetroPie installed. I haven't tested having both running at the same time, but I believe they will be conflicting with each other in my home network since they both are named RETROPIE.
How do I rename the name?

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before but here goes:

As a European Raspberry Pi newbie / potential buyer with little spare time for tinkering due to baby but who still wants to play some retro games (SNES, Genesis, Arcade, Neo Geo mostly) on a TV once in a while, what are my easiest options?

I'm talking about plug 'n play style of ease here, so with a Raspberry Pi already included and with no hassling with DIY cabinets, soldering in controller ports or buttons, or even installing an OS, emulator or front end (like emulation station, which I like the look of). Preferably I'd not even have to DL any roms myself as that has always given me trouble in the past with games not loading etc due to errors.

Does something like this exist, i.e. a complete Raspberry Pi solution with pre-installed emulators, front end and games that requires little to no tinkering or messing about apart from connecting it to a (HD)TV? One that can be shipped to Europe and works with EU electricity sockets? I'd be happy enough using an USB retro controller like my Saturn style ones, but if I can use original ones somehow without much hassle, that would be great as well.

Thanks guys! And apologies again if this has been answered to death. I would go through the whole thread myself if my baby would let me.

Edit: I just saw someone above mention the Canakit. Is that the way to go for me in Europe as well or would I run into problems? Is it compatible with the latest Raspberry?

Did you update the RetroPie script before updating Mupen64?

yes i did. i wonder if i just have crappy copies of certain ROMS. i downloaded these a LONG time ago and they came in a giant n64 rom bundle download. I noticed my goldeneye (and many others) are .z64 rather than .n64.

Is there a known quality difference between the 2? i just saw that the current download on emuparaside is a .n64 file. ill try that out.

also, should i be updating mupen64plus from "source" or "binary." i did source.

Some games just don't work properly still. Gauntlet Legends just goes to a black screen that I can't get over, which is a bummer because that was one of my most played games back in the day.

i know. but im still having audio and gameplay stutters on goldeneye and everyone seems to be saying its better now.

These kits would not help avoid setup of the emulator and OS. These kits just include everything you need to get started with the Pi and include Pi compatible wifi/bluetooth adapters and a case. For those looking in the UK there are much cheaper starter kits you can buy.

So, i've got Retropie setup in my car through composite, but the default audio level is way too loud. Turning up my car stereo introduces all kinds of (funky computer) audio artifacts.

I'm a pretty experienced user, anyone able to point out where that can be adjusted? I've been unable to find it.

You can find some shop sell preinstalled OS but definitely not games because that would be illegal. Maybe you can find it on ebay but that's definitely not legal.

There's a audio volume setting in the options of EmulationStation.

Ok, I've tried all four distros on my Pi 3 and Recalbox is the one so far. Waaay easier to someone as useless as I am in Linux things.

On a side note, I spent all day playing both PSOne's Medal of Honor games. What a blast!

But seeing so much more questions and answers about RetroPie in this thread makes me wonder: is RetroPie a better option overall?

(I had a lot of trouble to get RetroPie running when I tried it out couple days ago. I mean, A LOT)

Wait... in your car?

Hey all, I'm starting to look at the Pi for the first time. That one CanaKit that keeps getting quoted looks like the way to go, though I'm a little disappointed at $35 turning into $75 - maybe there's a way to cut that price if I want a smaller SD card?

Anyway, my real question - what about controllers with good d-pads? I'm hoping to get one with a long cord (15ft or so) that I could use to play SNES games and maybe have it flex to support modern 2d games like Axiom Verge. Any recommendations?

Your best bet is the iBuffalo. It's about $11 online.

Thanks. I've been seeing that suggested in every Raspberry Pi kit that I look at. I just ordered a usb cable extender since that's only got like a 6ft cable.

The 8bitdo controllers are great. Wireless by default but you could connect with a 15' USB cord if you want.

So, there I was, happily playing PSone and N64 games for the last two days very smoothly, thanks for a overclock that I've made on my Pi 3. I went for 1350 MHz, my case has a very speedy cooler and I was monitoring the temps: it never went over 41° Celsius. Never (with no cooler pluged on the GPIO, the thing simply runs hotter than that on stock clock!).

Today I tried to boot it up and saw all kinds of kernel panics related to CPU failures. So the overclock was the culprit. I removed the overclocking entry of the config.txt via Ubuntu and the Pi booted normally.

But I was so happy with the performance that I don't want to run it with stock clocks again. In some PSone games, the overclock made a huge difference. So I was wondering, does anybody here have experience with overclocking the Pi 3? What did I do wrong? Is there a clock target more stable?

I'm thinking about building a 4-player MAME cabinet, Is Raspberry PI the way to go or should I go with a traditional older-PC route?

Honestly. If it's a full sized cabinet Id go the older PC route.

Since you don't have to worry about space constraints, a PC will give you more grunt.

No, a 3. I have two solar panel battery chargers that put out 2.1 amps, so I can use one for the screen and one for the pi.

OK. This just sounds fun. Can't wait for the results.
