Raspberry Pi Gaming thread - Cheap emulation and gaming projects

I have no idea if this is any help, but I use Recalbox and for that the wifi name can't have any dashes or other special characters in, it has to be purely alphanumerical.

Thanks for your help.

Classical, this. As soon as I post I figured out the issue and am now connected. I have mac filtering on the router and mac address I was using was for the pi Ethernet port. The IP command in the terminal wouldn't spit out the Wi-Fi mac.

Ended up checking the router logs for denied access attempts and there it was.

Haha cool, np, glad you got sorted.

Really having issues getting retropie Wi-Fi working. I can see my network, type in the password, but it fails to connect every time. This is via the Wi-Fi option in the settings on 3.8.1 on a pi 3 b.

If you have special characters in your password (!, @, #, etc), note that by the Pi being from the UK, the keyboard uses the British standard, which lays out these characters different than a US keyboard. You can either toy around and figure out how where they moved, or go to Raspi-Config and change the keyboard to the US version.

I'm on a Pi 3b and just having a few teething problems with the Platstation roms. I can get them to work, but both the .bin and .cue files are showing so I'd displaying the game twice. Anyway to clear / hide the bin file? I read that the Retropie software had been updated on in June and I didn't get mine until July so I'm sure I've got the most recent update.

See my earlier post http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=210837243&postcount=2351 I'm using Recalbox but I imagine Retropie is similar.

Only just noticed that 8bitdo Nes pad with the analogue sticks. Truely a thing of beauty. Does anyone have one? Just wondered if it was ergonomic?

I'm on the verge of ordering a pair (it would be awesome to use on Recalbox and with my Gear VR). But I'm getting second thoughts because it looks way too small for my taste.

You can hide the duplicates, as explained. But I'd convert everything to PBP the emulator recognizes this format, which saves a lot of space (think of it as some kind of .rar for PSX emulation) and makes every game into one single file.

hi, another question. Looking through the MAME stuff, am i supposed to have advmame, fba-next etc as options in the runcommand launch menu? I've only got a choice of mame4all or lr-mame4all as my emulator choices. Are these other mame emulators something i have to add after the fact?

Figured it out. Separate folders.

Any tips on getting adv mame to recognise the buttons on my ds3? Only recognises square on the face buttons. I know there's a joystick modifier in the configuration but I don't know how to modify it

Oh excellent, nice one. I don't have many games for the PSX so it shouldn't take long to convert.

I ended up pulling the trigger on one. Watched a few reviews that say it's a little fiddly at first but after 10 minutes it feels like second nature. The size did put me off at first but we'll see how it goes. Can always send it back if it's too small.

Soooooo, any chance you could just give me a quick run through of how to convert the files into one? Annoyingly I can't find a thing relating to BIN/CUE to PBF.

You'll need a software called PSX2PSP. It was originally made for turning BIN/CUE into EBOOT.PBP files, a format recognizable by the built in PSP emulator, so you could play basically every PSOne game in your PSP in those glorious PSP days.

The software is very straight foward to use, you just select your BIN file, set a folder for the new one, and confirm to start the process. Just don't forget to change the name of the games after the convertion: every game will be saved as EBOOT.PBF in a folder with a name like "SCUS0444242". Just rename the EBOOT file with the actual title of the game and copy it to your rom folder and it's done.

If you don't set the names right, your list on Recalbox will be full of EBOOT games.

I did this conversion with all my 98 games library recently, after ripping every damn CD into BIN/CUE ages ago. It saved some 12 GB on my microSD card and I didn't got any problem running PBFs in Recalbox.

You're a dimond mate. Many thanks.

Right sorted this out. Went into the configuration editor, advanced config settings, manually edit non-retroarch configs and found the advmame_94blahblah.rc file. When opened, changed "device_joystick auto" to device_joystick sdl." Now advmame recognises my ds3 buttons as actual buttons.

Initially, it wasn't saving my changes, making me think save on exit or something wasn't functioning. Turned out i needed to tab out of the text in order to save changes to the config.

Have you guys heard of this?

So while I always knew you could load games from USB, this really caught my eye due to the extremely small footprint. It's also my solution to getting my PlayStation 1 games loaded on my Pi as space had been an issue with the on-board microSD card. I bought one of these and started testing it out on the Pi, and man is it so cool! I went and got me this Logitech wireless controller, the F710, to go with it.

That's a good idea if you've got loads of PSX roms. I was surprised how little roms for other systems take up though, I've got pretty much every western release from Nes, Master System, Magadrive, Snes, 32X, N64 and Mame so far and it's only taken 15% of a 128GB SD card. But the PSX roms seem beefy.

This came last night. Posted in the pickups thread but seems appropriate here.

I'm a tall guy with fairly big hands and it is on the smaller side for sure, but it's not as fiddily as something like the Vita was. The L2 and R2 buttons aren't out of position either, feels really nice. Couldn't say how it fairs for longer periods but it feels comfortable.

Looks like RetroPie has officially hit version 4.0.

Looking forward to better N64 emulation and hopefully I can get my Xbox One controller working wired now for games that require more buttons than my 8bitdo SNES controller has.

Announcement: https://retropie.org.uk/2016/08/retropie-4-0-released/

Highlights:
  • Improved management of RetroPie components.
  • Better N64 emulation.
  • Improvements to configuration of Xbox/8Bitdo gamepad
  • Analogue support in lr-mame2003 and correct aspect ratios for games.
  • Splashscreen/Carbon Emulation Station theme updates.

Change Log:
  • Setup script improvements:
    - Added the ability to install/update and remove packages.
    - Added help docs to the setup script.
  • Renamed mednafen emulators to beetle to match upstream libretro repositories.
  • Renaming of ES input configuration which was causing confusion for shoulder/trigger inputs.
  • Much faster Emulation Station start-up in gamelist only mode.
  • Updated Xpad driver included with “trigger to button” enabled, so mapping of Xbox 360 /
  • Logitech trigger buttons is easier.
  • Input configuration script to set up player 1 automatically on pifba and pisnes.
  • Configuration Editor can now help you configure player gamepad order for libretro emulators.
  • Updated PSP emulators ppsspp and lr-ppsspp with a fix for the pausing during play.
  • Autostart improvements: boot to kodi option added – (exiting kodi will take you back to emulationstation).
  • Improvements to mupen64plus Glide64 video plugin, which is now the default.
  • Added new libretro emulator based on mupen64 – lr-glupen64.
lr-mame2003 updates – support for mice/analogue joystick support. Fixed aspect ratio issues.
  • Updates to various other emulators including reicast, lr-fceumm, lr-nestopia, lr-snes9x-next and the RetroArch frontend.
  • SDL2 dispmanx scaling, so SDL2 software can render to a lower resolution and be scaled in hardware. This enhances performance on mupen64plus for example, without having to change the video mode.
  • Improvements to the Bluetooth module, including the ability to try and reconnect to devices in the background, and an option to switch off our mapping hack for 8bitdo, so devices with a newer firmware will map correctly for RetroArch. Fix pairing with Android phones.
  • Splashscreen improvements: New default splashscreen and a new splashscreen repository with additional splashscreens.
  • Support for configs/all/runcommand-onstart.sh configs/all/runcommand-onend.sh user scripts
  • New experimental modules:
    - TRS-80 emulator sdltrs.
    - TI-99/4A emulator ti99sim.
    - Oric 1/Atmos emulator Oricutron.
    - Dinothawr (lr-dinothawr – standalone libretro puzzle game).
    - lr-mame2014 (Late 2014/Early 2015 version of MAME – uses 0.159 romset)
    - Alternate Virtual Gamepad by sbidolach.
  • Various other bug fixes and improvements.

Edit: @the_milkybar_kid & @MikeTheBSG - also look into converting your PS1 ISOs into PSP eBoot images (.pbp files). The PS1 emulators in use by RetroPie support them and you can apply compression to them, without any perceivable loss in emulator performance on my Pi3. I was able to fit a bunch more PS1 titles on my Pi thanks to it.

Wait, are they saying 4.0 will have better 64 emulation?

Well retropie 4.0 freezes my systems as soon as ES boots. Not sure if this an issue for everyone but I am reverting back to my 3.8.1 backup as we speak.

Sup y'all.

Would someone be able to assist me with Sega CD emulation? I have the BIN files in the /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/segacd folder, and the bios files in the /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS folder. However, when I go to the Retropie menu, the games don't show up.

I can get Genesis, Super Nintendo, NES, and Playstation to work without issue.

Any ideas?

Make sure you have the us_scd1_9210.bin BIOS file in that BIOS folder. You have to have .cue and .bin files in the segacd folder.

Found out the issue apparently the simple theme in Emulation Station can't handle some amount(I think its 10) emulators. If you move to the Carbon Theme it will fix the issue.

That is correct. Using themes other than carbon could cause the system to crash if more than 10 systems are loaded. I think it had something to do with the image assets. I sure hope that big can be fixed one day.

You can also remove extraneous emulators to fix the white screen of death. Personally, I'd rather have the simple theme than a ton of emulators.

The EmulatorStation dev has abandoned development, but I saw some talk on the RetroPie forums about forking it. I hope someone does because it's a very attractive front end and I'd love to see it get more robust (ideally with a "by series" sort in addition to a "by system" sort.)

So after updating to 4.0 I seem to have some small issues. Rondo doesn't boot, have syscard3 where it needs to be. All PS1 games start up and say no BIOS found expect errors.

Both are in the /BIOS folders, soooooooo. Any suggestions?

Is there a way to load my roms onto the MicroSD card that isn't over wifi? I've been wanting to get stuff on my Pi Zero and my ethernet adapter and wifi adapters seem to work very poorly.

My scraper has stopped working. I've updated the majority of roms are done through Selphs Scraper. But every so often I'll find ine that hasn't got the info and I'll do it through the main menu.

It's worked before but this weekend, both before and after installing 4.0- stopped. It just freezes up as soon as you press to scrape an idividual file and eventually you gain control again.

I thought it was my internet at first as its been sluggish all weekend but its been fine this morning but doing the same thing.

Anyone experienced anything similar?

My issue was twofold.

My retroarch/all config was looking at a different BIOS dir than my networkable shared folder. Fixed that.
Also, bios are case sensitive. Fixed that too.

Hope this helps somebody save some time if they run into it.

I got pretty savvy with Retropie/Recalbox, but the only thing I don't get is those advanced scrapping methods.

I always use the built in ones and they often fell short, missing some very popular games.

Is there a guide for scrapping the hell out of my library?

Do you use Selph's scraper or the one that's built into the ui?

Is there an add-on version of RetroPie??, i want to use LibreElec as my main OS and just have RetroPie as an add-on which i can load.....or though is this really any different from Emulation Station and RetroArch??

Just tried vbersion 4 of RetroPie and they dont seem to have setup a button to exit out of menus in RetroArch, so much for an out of the box working OS!!

Has the Pi zero manged to get 100% PSX emulation with version 4 of retroPie?

Anyways, thinking of redesigning the arcade cabinet I built last year so it's a bit cleaner,. aims are:

- no visible cuts on the sides
- a back panel with hinges or screws
- internal pi mount
- internal speaker mount
- making it out of plywood so it looks like proper wood.

Thoughts?

That looks awesome dude. I've been trying to get a design down myself for laser cutting. Would you be OK with me using elements of this?

Hey
I have a problem with my retropie.
I'm using it trough hdmi on my tv and there is no sound.
I tried every fix but non is working.
When I'm using kodi installed from ports I get sound.

Should I just install retropie from scratch again?

Did you I comment hdmidrive2 from the config.txt file?

Just making sure.

I was kind of bummed out that I couldn't put PlayStation games on my on-board SD card without spending a fortune or installing a bulky hard drive, until I saw this.

Man! This thing is so small! It's like the size of a penny and it barely sticks out of the USB port on the Pi, yet it boosts 128 GB of storage for my PlayStation games. This thing is awesome! And it's less than $30 now.

Hey everyone!

I was wondering if anyone has built a Golden Tee on Retropie on Raspberry Pi 3 with X-Arcade Trackball?

I tried the search function but had ZERO luck.

Thanks!
