Raspberry Pi Gaming thread - Cheap emulation and gaming projects

Nice! Thanks for linking that thread btw.

Now time to gussy it up aesthetically...

I originally was going to mount it portrait/vertically, but it's widescreen and too narrow. 4:3 would've been better suited I think.

I just heard about this retropie thing. please keep in mind I know absolutely nothing about this. I would like to ask some questions here given you're very savvy people.

Given I know nothing at all I would like to know:

a) May I order this from amazon? I tried searching for raspberry pi or retropie and hundreds of results showed up. I don't know if these are legit or which is the most recommended. A link would be appreciated.

You can order a Raspberry Pi, or a kit with things you'll need, like microSD card, PSU, controller, case and etc from Amazon.

The Raspberry Pi is a small computer in a board: it has a processor, RAM, USB ports, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, a microSD card slot (the Pi don't have any storage on its own), a headphone jack and a HDMI port. You can emulate old consoles in all versions, but the Pi 3 is the best one, since its hardware is more powerfull.

b) given my lack of knowledge of this thing, ow difficult is it to have it up and running?

Retropie is a Linux distro which holds emulators. You'll need to install it on the microSD card to run it on the Raspberry, and then you'll need the ROMs. I'd recommend you to try Recalbox first, it's basically the same thing, just more user friendly.

Nice!

You can get a 4:3 10" monitor here, just take off the casing around it and it's good to go - there are cheaper models as well if you search on ebay. I have one and it works really well. Without the casse it's 22.7cm by 17.2cm

Pimoroni also sell a *8" 4:3 monitor as well, the benefit of this smaller monitor is the fact that it can run off USB if you ever wanted a portable system.

I am trying to configure this PS3 controller clone, but it always keep vibrating nonstop. Anyone had similar problem?

I did. I couldn't get a third party one to work. I can't remember if it vibrated non-stop or not, but it might have. I just switched to a regular PS3 controller.

Any settings/recommendation for Dreamcast emulation? Interested in Skies of Arcadia, which apparently should work, but somehow cannot get it running. Just black screen appears and goes back to the ES.

I did use my old iCade to turn it into a PiCade. Have a look:

This is all the pieces of the puzzle.
- arcade controls modded on a USB joypad
- 10.1 screen plus control board
- USB sound bar
- Bluetooth for joypad controls
- Power switch
- Back buttons (for emulators controls: quit, coins, etc...)

Then the finished product:

I have a friend who's very handy with tools so he added the back door and use a saw on the iCade's sides so that the screen would just slide in.

I'm considering getting a Raspberry Pi for emulation. How does the Dreamcast version of Marvel vs Capcom 2 perform? Is it playable?

I'm not a big fighting games fan, so I never played this. But for Dreamcast emulation I'd recomend you an overclock: since I've done this, everything runs better. It's amazing the world of difference that 100 MHz on both CPU/GPU make in the big trio PSOne/N64/Dreamcast.

Almost done! I just need to fab a bezel and have no idea how to do that...

Planning on getting some L brackets to mount a UE Boom mini speaker above the screen. Then some wood for the base, and some type of hinged back cover.

I want to employ the 25c badge in the front. I heard using a touch sensor is pretty easy to do...

Fantastic work!

There are a few sticker companies that will sell them marquees for icade.

For the 25 cent you could use this as an optic switch.

I'm glad I never quite got the arcade 90s. The ammount of work required seems to be way too much for me.

The amount of work is completely dependent on much you want to do... I mean, you can get kits that have almost everything there for you and make it real easy to do in a couple hours. You don't have to go completely crazy, I know I don't when tax refund season comes around again.

Like above there are kits, It's the equivalent of building your own PC, most people buy a console pre-packaged and are okay with - while some build it themselves and reap multiple benefits from it, sure you will need to tinker with it but it's the sort of gratification you can get once you've accomplished something big.

Just let your imagination run wild and see what you can make. you'll appreciate it for what it is. like how a cake takes better when you make it with your own hands, it just does.

Nah, I never played much on arcade machines. It isn't a nostalgia that I have.

But you are probably right: if you like something, you'll eventually overcome difficulties and see things as if they were more simple.

It's the same thing with some friends of mine that simply don't understando how do you turn a small PCB into a videogame and some of them go even further: "but why do you need that if you got a PS4 anyway?"

What is the best shader to use in 8/16-bit games? I put the CRT-PI and the scanlines look fine, but I wonder if are more interesting options.

I think I use the Hq4x Shader or one of it's variants which removes the blocks - almost gives it a AA effect..

I then choose an overlay calleed cool-mame which gives nice scanlines to the game..

Works out pretty well.

Wondering if anyone here can help with my issue.

I've built a test board, which will eventually be mounted into a coffee table setup. I wired up some arcade parts using an IPAC. Here's a pic:

Cc4-6EiVAAA8owe.jpg

The problem is the 5th and 6th buttons of the 2nd player side do not register at all (MK and HK in Street Fighter). I tested them with the IPAC button tester and they are wired properly and register under the correct keyboard assignments. But, whenever I play a fighting game, those two buttons do not work at all.

I've even gone into the back end command-line coding and they seem to be set up properly. Does anyone know exactly where and how I can fix this?

I'm currently using a Rpi2 for a mini iCade that I have.

However, I have a regular arcade cabinet which used to have a computer inside but it died. I'm wondering if I could use a Rpi3 instead.

I have:
LCD Screen
Regular PC speakers
Joystick controls mapped to a i-pac 2 card.

I want:
Emulation
Video streaming from the Rpi3

Can I have an operating system running along with Retropie or it's one or the other?

You can use berryboot to run Retropie and a desktop OS.

This guy got raspbian inside emulationstation menu.

If you want to stream games to the arcade machine then install moonlight, it's one the packages in retropie setup. You need a nvidia card however.

Thks, I will try. Looks a bit dark, but maybe in the TV is fine.

This is what Shadow Dancer looks with the CRT-Pi shader.

Is worth set the overscan to use the entire TV height or with the black space around the Retropie output better, without blur?

It;s up to you, personally I never use oversan and able to get the full height of the screen, but I am using a 4:3 lcd.

Guys, I'm going to put my Raspberry Pi 3 (or maybe the Orange Pi, I'm still debating which one) inside a PSone shell: it was my favorite console and gives me a great power button.

But I was wondering if it is possible to use the old and great PlayStation intro on Retropie/Recalbox. Any ideas?

EDIT: got it, Retropie supports custom splash effects.

If I update from 3.8.1 to 4.0.2 using the built-in updater script, will it overwrite any of my configurations? I'm talking both emulator specific configs (for stuff like overlays, shaders... etc.) and modifications that I've made to my top-level retroarch.cfg as well.

Most likely yes. I would backup the sd and then apply updates. I lost my custom fba controls with some updates.

I have a Pi 3, what's the best way to set up Homepass on it? All my usual relays are dead or dying, even living in a pretty populated area.

I tried the crt-pi shader and quite like the way it looks but I get screen tearing at the bottom of the screen using pi3

NEC integrates Raspberry Pi into their Monitors.

timthumb.php

NEC Display Solutions has announced that it will be sharing an open platform modular approach with Raspberry Pi, enabling the integration of Raspberry Pi’s devices with NEC’s displays. The collaboration is the first between a display manufacturer and the Raspberry Pi creator and helps expand NEC’s market opportunity.

Hopes this catches on with other monitor brands, An all in one PC with Raspberry PI would be amazing for so many reasons.

Hey everyone, I'm new here so bear with me. I'm currently in the market for buying a raspberry pi 3 b for the sole purpose of turning it into a retropie! But before I do, I need to ask some questions, so hopefully you guys can assist in my inquiry. So here are my questions:

1. Is Raspbian required to run Retropie? I don't intend to use the pi for anything other than the sole purpose of retro gaming and nothing else.

2. Is there a simple way to overclock the pi to run certain emulators better, like the dream cast? Because I am lost when it comes to the concept of overclocking.

3. Is the raspberry pi site the only place I can get a power supply or are there any other places I can get them?

4. Are Logitech controllers good to use for the pi? Because I plan to get at least two.

5. I plan on putting roms on the same card as the retropie program will be, so will that be a problem? (I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. :P)

6. How the performance of the emulators for the following: N64, NES, Genesis, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Advance, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn and MAME?

Nope. In fact, Retropie is built on top of it. I'd recommend you to consider Recalbox instead: is more user friendly and you are new to this.

2. Is there a simple way to overclock the pi to run certain emulators better, like the dream cast? Because I am lost when it comes to the concept of overclocking.

Yes. Unlike a traditional PC, Raspberry doesn't have a BIOS. But it has a config.txt file that acts like a BIOS. All you have to do is open it and set the clock you want it to apply for the CPU/GPU

3. Is the raspberry pi site the only place I can get a power supply or are there any other places I can get them?

Any PSU with output rated at 5 volts and 2.2 ampères is OK. Some cellphone chargers might be able to output 5V/2.2A. (If you'll gonna put a lot of things on the USBs you should look for a PSU with more amps, like 3 A, which seems to be the sweetspot).

4. Are Logitech controllers good to use for the pi? Because I plan to get at least two.

If they are Linux compatible, they should work just fine. Just Google the model that you want to use and see if they are really compatible.

5. I plan on putting roms on the same card as the retropie program will be, so will that be a problem? (I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. :P)

That's basically the only way to go since the Raspberry Pi doesn't have any data space on its own, everything is stored on the microSD card. (You can offload some games to a thumb drive, or external hard disk if you want to).

6. How the performance of the emulators for the following: N64, NES, Genesis, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Advance, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn and MAME?

I don't use Retropie for quite sometime now, but in the Recalbox, N64 is kinda hit and miss. Dreamcast, for what I recal, is even worse, running ok with some games and needing overclock. PS1 and Mame runs great (mine is overclocked) here and I assume is the same thing in Retropie. Pretty much any system with hardware specs below the N64 runs fine in any distro: Retropie, Recalbox and Lakka.

About Saturn, you'll have to wait.

Not gaming related, but has anyone here messed with using the pi for DVR with an hd antenna and tuner? Installed Kodi, but not having much luck figuring out how the hell to install the usb tuner.

Did you install the dvb drivers? Might need to either install it through a repo or download separate drivers.

Think so. Been a couple of days since I messed with it. I'm diving back in in a few hours when I get home. I was having a hard time finding a guide that showed me every step of the way for both installing the tuner, and getting the software up and running. Everything I was finding was for streaming the tv over wifi or something. Plugging the tuner right into a pi seemed like a rare thing or something.

I can't help much with the usb tuner, but my setup is not too different. I use a Pi with a homerun hd tuner that runs on the network. OSMC + Tvheadend is the backend with Kodi running on top of it. It all works very well and was able to replace my Windows Media Center pc.
