Raspberry Pi Gaming thread - Cheap emulation and gaming projects

I updated my Recalbox yesterday to the newest version (4.0.0 beta 6, I think), and now games take up to 20 seconds to start instead of about 3 - 5 like before. Anybody experience the same? Any solutions?

Ordered the following:

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 3 with 2.5A Micro USB Power Supply (UL Listed)

Official Raspberry Pi 3 Case - Black/Grey

Since I'm going to be using Kodi on this extensively (hopefully!), would it be wise to order a remote? I will be gaming with a Dual Shock 4 wired, or possibly a Wii U Pro wireless if the lag is minimal. Wouldn't mind having that 80 hour battery working in my favour.

If your TV supports CEC (nearly all of them do but under different names) just use that remote to control your Pi. Also, there are official Kodi remote apps for both iOS and Android.

So I'm a noob to all this (Ive been living under a rock and only just learned about the Pi), but I've been reading the last few pages of this thread and doing some research elsewhere to educate myself on it. I have a few quick questions:

1) Will an Xbox One controller work with RetroPie? I have the wireless adapter that works with PC, so I have that to use. Not sure if it works here or not!

2) What can I expect as far as N64 and PS1 performance? Some folks in this thread are saying N64 works well for them without overclocking after the most recent updates, but some are saying performance is stuttery for both platforms and requires overclocking. If the latter is the case, can anyone suggest a safe overclocking speed that boosts N64 and PSX performance? Or are there any settings that need to be adjusted/tweaked to get the most out of the emulation? I care more about N64 emulation than PSX emulation myself, so any wisdom on that would be much appreciated.

3) Do any of you use a 32 GB MicroSD? And if so, do you find that to be enough space for you? I know PSX games take up more space but I'm not planning on having too many of those. Just want to know if that amount of space is plenty for you, generally speaking!

I can only give you limited answers as I am running Openelec on an RPi2 and emulators (via Retroarch) on top of that.

Xbox One controller works fine. You might need to do an initial setup, but that's it.

I have never had any success with N64 emulators, but it's been a while since I last tried. Performance was okay, but the emulation was way too inaccurate.

PSX performance is good for me on the PCSX-Rearmed core. No overclocking needed. However, this will likely depend on what game you are playing and what emulator core you are using. The games I have played to completion on the Pi are only Symphony of the Night and Silent Hill. Metal Gear Solid seems to perform well.

With regards to space, I use a 64 GB card. I think even a 16 GB card would work for me, but I am pretty aggressive when it comes to deleting content I have already watched or played. I think 32 GB is enough for most purposes unless you have a huge collection of PSX games you want to store on the card.

Got my Raspberry Pi today and I'm mucking around with it right now. One thing I've noticed is occasional stutter. So far happening in NES and SNES games. I'm using Recalbox. Has anyone noticed this?

My Pi Zero should arrive next week. Can anyone recommend a good screen that would fit in a GBA? And a place where I can get good buttons?

Sorry, I'm not really sure what you mean. I'm gonna say no, though...not that I've noticed.

He is referring to this:

It's a sign of undervoltage. Your PSU isn't able to maintain the processor running on higher clocks, so everything slows down a bit. You should use a power supply with 5 volts and 2,5 ampères output in order to run everything fine.

If this is not the case, try to disable the rewind feature (which is enabled in standard conditions): makes a LOT of difference.

Ah, I see. Nope, not seeing that at all. I bought a bundle from Amazon that comes with a power supply, so that shouldn't be an issue (hopefully!)

This is almost as if the emulator isn't refreshing properly with the tv. Almost as if Retroarch is being set to a different refresh rate than my tv (which very well could be the issue). It's seen hitching like this before, particularly with emulators.

Figured it out. I was mucking around with the Retroarch config file, and I noticed threaded video was enabled. Disabling it has solved my random stuttering issue.

So I've got an old Sega Genesis model 2 just sitting on a shelf in my closet...it functions, but I don't use it at all and I've been toying with the idea of putting a Pi3 in there and using it as an emulator..

I've seen a couple older tutorials for doing this online, but just wondering if anyone wanted to hook me up with a rundown of what I might need as far as materials to do this right...

If I'm going to put it inside the Genesis then it's probably not worth it ordering one of those kits from Amazon or something that come with everything you need because I won't need a case...

The one thing I really want is that the power button functions to turn the Pi on/off...

Does anyone know if there is any perceptible difference in input lag between Retropie running on a Pi3 vs an overclocked Pi2+? I suspect that there wouldn't be, but it can't hurt to ask. Just wondering if there is any reason why I should upgrade to a Pi 3 if my Pi2+ seems to run all of my games fine other than the slight input lag that comes with the territory of playing these emulators using OpenGL + shaders/overlays on an HDTV.

I've modified my retroarch.cfg settings to minimize input lag as much as possible, but it's still noticeable in super-responsive platformers like SMW.

Anyone who uses Kodi with their Pi: do you find you get random stutters while watching video? I've noticed it across several shows. I'm reading online that disabling hardware acceleration is a possible fix. I'll try it tonight, but just curious if anyone has fixed the issue with that method, or done something else.

Streaming or off USB? I've watched 720P x265 videos and 1080i MP4s and both have run flawlessly on my Pi 2.

Streaming. There was a hw setting I enabled that seems to have fixed it though!

So is the only way to turn this thing on really just to unplug the power and plug it back in? Curious if any of you have found any creative solutions. Mine thus far is using a remote controlled ac adapter. I kill power to the Pi once I've shut it down, and then turn it on with the remote. Not terribly elegant though.

I got the info from this thread: https://github.com/recalbox/recalbox-os/issues/873

The stutter was very minor. My fiancée didn't notice it and I pointed it out several times. I work in tv and part of my job is to find issues like that, so I might just be more sensitive to it. Or, maybe CPU overclocking does solve it. Not sure!

I haven't found any way to oc the cpu with my Pi3. There's an option for it but I'm not able to change it. Any idea how I can enable it?

Never noticed any issues at all.

What are you running the movies from?, SD, USB Pen drive, USB harddrive (2.0 or 3.0)? Also are the 720 or 1080p videos?

That setting doesn't work. You'll have to open the config.txt file, which acts as a some sort of BIOS for the Pi, and write your overclock settings there.

I'm just streaming stuff off Exodus.

Thanks! If I ever feel something isn't running as smoothly as I'd like in the future, I'll look into overclocking. So far I've got everything running perfectly. (I don't plan on playing anything beyond the 16-bit era.)

What is the class of your microSD card? Anything less than 10 could cause those issues you're getting in Kodi.

About overclock, you are perfectly fine then. Overclock is needed for PS1, N64, Dreamcast and PSP.

Okay I have a question about Recalbox and over locking a raspberry pi 3 b. Can any of you please tell me in the simplest way possible how to overclock a pi 3b? Please? I need to know this so i can be prepared for when I get to work on making my moms present this Christmas.

I'm going to give her a pi 3 with recalbox and some games on it that she enjoyed playing as well a few others.

I'm working on setting this up for my nephews. I've got everything good to go and the Raspberry Pi boots up and then it goes to the RetroPie screen. I configure the controller but then I don't have the ability to move left or right to view emulators. I've tried wiping the SD card and putting the image on it again and same thing happens. Anyone have any experience with this issue? I'm stumped. I've also tried multiple controllers and they all work in the retro pie menus. I just can't go left or right to view emulators. It's really weird and frustrating

Is there a trick to getting Mame roms working on Recalbox? Some work while others don't, and I've confirmed they work on my PC.

Ordered a RP3 at a nice Black Friday price, gonna pick it up tomorrow. Its main use will be as a RetroPie box.

Question: Can I fully use this without a keyboard? Shockingly, I do not own one, since my only computer is a laptop. I know I can SSH to the RP, but does that let me do everything I need?

EDIT: Seems like with a combination of SSH and VNC I should be able to do everything without ever connecting a keyboard to the Pi.

Where you get it?

Are you really sure you need OC? I ask this because it isn't a trivial thing to do and looks like the unit will face pretty casual load, so maybe it isn't a necessity.

If I have an SD card with Retropie 3.8 and all of my configurations/ROMs on it running in my Pi2 right now, can I just swap it into a Pi3 and have everything working without complications?

Do I need to Overclock a Rasbery Pie 3 for Mario Kart N64 and Mario 64 @720? those are the only N64 games I plan to run on the Pie and 1 PSX game (Tekken 3) the rest will be Snes NES and Genesis Games

I was able to do this with minimal fuss. Just mind any customizations you've done to the config.txt file like overclocking and reset things to default if you want to play it safe.

Yeah I have made overclocking changes to my Pi2 setup. Is there a simple way to return everything in that file to default?

I'm on mobile at the moment and can't look up the location exactly, but you should be able to download the original file from the Retropie website or Github and just compare changes you've made. Just comment out anything you've added with a "#" in front of the line.

Just got a Pi 3 along with the latest version of Retropie, and I'm having some trouble getting sound working if anyone can help! On one of the TVs in my house, I plugged it up using HDMI and sound was working great, both in the emulation station hub and in all of the games I tested. Then I plugged it into a different TV in my house (the one I'm planning on using), and I couldn't get any sound whatsoever. Not in emulation station or in the games.

It's not the TV sound settings, and it's not the audio settings on Retropie either - it's set to export sound via HDMI like its supposed to, and the output volume is cranked up. Not sure what the issue is.

Sorry if this has already been resolved in a prior page, Ive only had a chance to skim through some of the pages!

Is the Pi3 able to do genesis and snes at 1080p or should I stick to 720p? I am putting together a recalbox setup for my brother in law this xmas seeing as NES Classic is sold the fuck out.

Can I play with a Dualshcok4? Only with usb cable or with Bluetooth as well? How much should it cost for games up to the SNES, playable in a 1080p monitor - i can play in lower resolutions though?

Snes games are 224p, and unlike polygonal games, you aren't going to get any real improvement rendering them that high.
