Rayman Legends on PS4 & Xbox One: Uncompressed textures, no load times

I just read the DF article and noticed that the Wii U version has higher res. textures than the PSBone versions. How can that be if Ubisoft used uncompressed textures?

Very weird.

so which one to take?

wiiu @ 25$ or PS4 @ 40$? how load times are better? gfx wise its really the same? both have "remote" play so....

Seriously dude, do you a favor and get the Wii U version.
It's way cheaper, all versions technically run and look the same
The load times thing is bullshit in all consoles. At most, you'll have to wait a second or two
between the main gallery and the levels. It's just a hook to get you interested
It's definitely not worth the extra $20.

Look for youtube videos if you don't believe me.

Rayman Legend's load screens are probably the one of the best examples of load screens done right. You can get a heart before a level in the load screen and you have full control of your character if you want to just warm up or something. Based on the Eurogamer article, it doesn't seem like the graphics are much different, so it's really up to price IMO

since i have both wiiu and ps4....gonna go for wiiu. Almost half the price.

just bought Donkey kong , and strider tomorrow on ps4....side scroller are rolling now

The load times on 360 installed were so short you couldn't always get that extra heart. I don't see any reason these versions exist at all.

EDIT: or rather I don't see any reason why I'd want to buy them again. At least they priced them lower.

Been waiting on picking this game up. Will either get the Wii U version or this one, depending on if I can find a deal for the Wii U version before I get a PS4.

That Digital Foundry recommends the Wii U version even above the PS4 and Xbox One offerings is something to behold.

Technically the PC version should be the best of all worlds. Highest res textures, downsampling abilities, any controller you want to use, best sound quality, no load times...

Wonder if it's $10 yet. Lol

I don't think they expect double dips on these. Simply people who waited it out, like me.

Even at half the price, I won't buy the PS3 version, as I sold my PS3.

They choose Wii U because of the controls which is fair enough.

Are you talking about the grass in the foreground? May just be that screen grab perhaps.

The article makes no mention of the Wii U's textures looking better.
And isn't that grass a sprite anyway?

That Digital Foundry recommends the Wii U version even above the PS4 and Xbox One offerings is something to behold.

It's a different experience. The Murphy levels are touch screen rhythm based challenges on the Wii U and just button presses on the others.

It's also one of the few games to deliver native 1080p visuals running at a smooth 60fps - an impressive feat rarely seen on the previous generation of consoles, and something which both the PS4 and Xbox One are struggling to achieve in an era where pushing prettier pixels on screen is still considered to be more important than targeting high frame-rates.
I think this is a little misleading, how many games rendering like Rayman Origins/Legends are there on PS4 and Xbone.

First impressions reveal that the basic rendering set-up doesn't appear to have changed from the last-gen versions of the game, with Rayman Legends adopting a native 1080p framebuffer on both PS4 and Xbox One without any anti-aliasing on its 3D elements.
This is fucking bullshit though.

Instead, the varying gamma set-up and contrast settings between platforms have a more noticeable effect with regards to the amount of sharpness and visible detail in any given scene, with the 360 subtly crushing the darkest details on screen. The difference in install sizes between the two platforms is also interesting (4.3GB on Xbox One and 9GB on PS4) and we can't help but wonder whether the Xbox One version features the uncompressed assets at all. Regardless, whatever the explanation may be, the visual differences across all the versions we've tested to date are minimal to non-existent.
Interesting.

PS4: 9GB
XBO: 4.3GB
PS3: 6.82GB
WiiU: 6.7GB
360: 6.5GB
PC: 5.76GB

All versions of the game are very closely matched on raw visual terms, but loading times are not dramatically improved over last-gen console and PC, being virtually non-existent on the PS4 and Xbox One. As a result, the interactive loading screens found in the other versions of Rayman Legends are removed entirely and the distinct lack of any breaks in moving in between the hub world and individual levels delivers a more seamless experience than before without any momentary distractions away from the core gameplay.
Is the word 'not' supposed to be there? They were short before, but cutting down to nothing is still a dramatic change.

DigitalFoundry really need to switch to PNG screenshots, at least minimise their JPG compression.

Saying that, the same grass texture that's higher res on Wii U than PC, PS3 and 360 is still sharper on Wii U than PS4 and Xbone there. UBI got some explaining to do..

The background is more detailed, too. I have no idea, maybe it's just shitty compression. We will have to wait until somebody gets one of the 2 new versions and makes a direct comparison.

I was definitely surprised with how small the size was for the Xbox One version. Wonder why...

And the loading times have been completely cut when it comes to going into the levels so the times have been reduced when it comes to that. You are in the level as soon as you jump into its picture frame.

Is it me or the XBO version looks just a taaaaaaaaaaaad cleaner than the PS4?

OMG
It's a taaaaaad bit more screwed up gamma and 69wpm's picture is double-JPEG-compressed (at high compression) so pretty awful for comparison.

So yeah, the better textures, faster loading times plus the convinence of starting the game simply by saying its name (Xbox One) is enough for me to want the next gen version even though I already had it/played it on the Xbox 360. I like the game that much.

You've probably realized by now that you can launch it on PS4 by saying the name of the game as well.

I can't see any PS4 to XBO texture difference in that particular scene which was revealing in the PS360/WiiU/PC face off.

Just the screwy Xbox gamma curve again.

I'm surprised this hasn't become a meme by now.

Aha! You can pull PNG's from DigitalFoundry just by modifying the url.

PS4 and Xbone share the same texture quality as PC in that shot. Wii U higher, PS3 and 360 lowest.

Going to redo that gamma comparison with the PNG source.

Am I correct in making the assumption that due to the Murfy touch-screen levels NOT being implemented as a second screen feature for the PS4 version of this game (using the Vita as the second screen ala Deus Ex: HR Director's Cut on PS3) that I should be rolling with the Vita version of this title instead of the "barely improved visually, Wii U actually looks better, load times are gone though" PS4 port?

Or are the gyro controls so maddening in these levels on the Vita version that I'd be better off with the PS4 game anyhow - even if I just plan on remote playing the title on my Vita? I only want to play this game once but when I do I want to do it on the system that will offer me the most robust Legends experience. (FWIW, I played and thoroughly enjoyed Origins on my Vita.)

The Murphy stuff's not great on any platform but I found the direct platforming control with auto-murphy button on PS3 preferable to the Wii U demo. Haven't played the Vita version so I don't know how that works exactly.

Anyone play this yet on PS4? Picked up my copy today from Gamestop. Going to give it a whirl tonight. I never played it before so this will be my first experience with it.

I'm on my phone so it's difficult to see, but the textures look better on the Wii U? But... But how?

PS4 and Wii U versions look normal, Xbox One version looks like someone turned up the gamma, it looks like shit. It pierces your eyes and the shadows are black holes of doom and death. The terrific art is ruined.

Why is this still happening with Xbox One games? Look at the shadows in the bushes, they outright lose detail, and Rayman looks more like he is radioactive

I really can't tell the difference between the PC/Wii-U/PS4 versions. There's something wrong with the xbox one version though, what the hell is up with these colours.

Did a quick comparison again. Look at the grass, it's clearly more detailed in the Wii U version. No idea how and why.

raymanowk5w.png

Xbox One version might be pre-patch with the sharpening filter? The colours are totally off.

Yeah, after looking at the PNGs, the details in the grass and some background elements are the tiniest bit sharper.
So is the HUD Rayman face in the corner.

Really weird.

And Wii U version does look a little better than the other two, its not major but you can see it.

The game was developed for the Wii U first, so i imagine that helped

I hope this is just a DigitalFoundry capture issue with the new PS4 and XBO shots:

See the blockiness on Rayman's red hood? None of the other versions have this. All PNG source files.

The same artifacting is on the edge of the egg, the top-left HUD portrait and there's a bit more banding in the foreground grass too.

I double dipped on PS4 & PC it's fun and that's all I care about. I got mine at Best Buy and i'm in the gamers club so it was just $32. Getting DKC on friday so it's officially platformer week.

Aside from a higher quality intro movie (can't remember if the game has a realtime or pre-rendered attract mode) and lossless audio, I'm struggling to think of a reason the PS4 version would be over 2GB larger than the second-largest (PS3).
