Re: PS3 "it will be expensive," - Kutaragi

I'll have to see the context of this question, as it might have been in regards to costs, but Reuters seems to have taken it as the retail pricing. And Kutagari almost seems proud in a high price lately. I'd just keep my mouth shut if I thought it was going to be expensive.

... <PSP Web Browser stuff, with a quote that messes up the shipped PSP numbers>

The announcements were made during a Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. strategy event which also showcased several games for the company's PlayStation 3 console, which hits store shelves next spring and is expected to compete with new hardware from rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co.

No PS3 price has been announced, but "it will be expensive," Kutaragi said.

That's the most truthful thing Kutaragi has said in a long while. :lol

Anyway, I better start saving up, or start praying third parties move on elsewhere to a cheaper platform.

Well I think its better for Ken to just level with folks from the get go instead of leading them on into believing it will be $299 again.

...kutaragi wants owners to bleed desire so they really feel the glory of owning a ps3 :lol

Maybe he's trying to bluff and make MS feel comfortable about charging a higher than $300 price point...

In truth, I think Sony will do everything they can to hit the $299 price point, but I think it'll drop for somewhere in the $349 to $399 range.

Luckily some of us actually have jobs, and $300-$400 isn't going to force me into Deuce Bigalo status.

Many games will be $60, so that's going to be what hurts with as many games as many of us buy.

Where was this stated?

In his interviews he often tells that he's not worried about price because even if PSX and PS2 were expensive when they were launched they both sold well.
He sounds even concerned of previous generation consoles being competition for new consoles because of inferior price.

Well to think that consoles aren't affected by inflation is pretty naiive. I mean, if PS3 and 360 are really 299 then in real dollars that's less than the PSOne's 299. Still, all of this stuff now is purely marketing and PR maneuvering. Everything is said deliberately to massage and manipulate the market into holding expectations and either exceeding those expectations very loudly or just kind of let reality set in.

gamefly.com is going to save me a shitload of money....then at the end of the generation i can buy all my favorites when they hit $14.99

The plan is simple "oh the PS3 is gonna be very expensive". Then it will come up at a decent price BUT it will look like a bargain and will sell tons. We see through you Kutaragi.

You guys don't get it.

These quotes are to lead Microsoft into thinking that they'll be able to raise the price of the 360 to above $300.

Thus when MS launches 360 at $359.99 and PS3 announces a $300 price point....

edit: Wyzdom got it heh

What does expensive mean? Expensive in relation to previous Sony hardware launches or just stating the obvious for hardware launches in the last ten years?

Have any interviews handy? I honestly don't remember those statements... did he say any anything about PS1/PS2 being expensive around their launches?

people pay $500,- for a pc graphics card alone, this PS3 thing will give you a whole lot more for around the same price.

Great quote.

Now I can run back to IGN and dig up all the old threads where certain Sony fans guaranteed a price of $299 for PS3. I tried using logic and an actual coherent thought process in pointing out that there is no way in hell PS3 launches at $299 with a BD drive, built in wi-fi, and the Cell processor.

Let the pwning commence.

They can charge whatever they want and they know it.

PS2 made a killing in Europe with a launch price of 600-700+ dollars. Same will happen again. And with the PSP also launching this fall Xbox 360 will be in big trouble here. PSP launch and promise of PS3 quickly after = no room for the 360.

Yes they do, but only certain people. $500 graphics are not mass market, average home items. Playstations are. Althought at $500 they will not be. I seriously doubt we will see a $500 launch price.

Given KK's penchant for overstatement, I think it's safe to assume from this quote that the PS3 will not be very expensive at all

You think so? I don't live in Europe so I'm not sure how the market will react. You think the PSP will be a hotter item than Xbox 360 this Xmas?

He's probably just doing it to create some good hype right near launch when they announce it at 300 or so. "Sony PS3 much cheaper than expected" sounds better than "Ps3 more expansive than xbox360"

You make it sound as if X360 will retain for under $300 (virtually no chance of that)...

Well if they are going to charge a $100 price premium over the 360 then the games better look substantially better. People aren't going to subsidize the price just to get high def bluray movies.

Well, as I would have been in the market for a high definition DVD drive, the PS3 will be cheap for me, even at $499.

If you don't give a rats ass about Blu-ray, well, the price will be high for you.

Unfortunately, the majority will probably see it as high.

Lets see just how powerful the Playstation brand is.

Yes, because PWNING is what it's all about isn't it? Run along, I'm sure you're contributions will be noted.

i don't think so, at least in the US. PS2 presold on hype, DVD playback, and the low confidence people had in Sega hardware*. Now Sony's going against Xbox360, whose predecessor sold quite well despite coming later in the game and spending the first year or so coming into its own. E3 video demos aside, i don't really see the PS3 having the same impact, even with Blueray playback and the power of the Playstation franchise. This early into the game, i'd expect this kind of comment to be more of a bluff to possibly ease MS into a slightly higher price as the PS3 launches at a price "lower than expected".

* Note that those aren't necessarily the only or even most important reasons, but the reasons that come to mind. i don't want to turn this into a "Why the Dreamcast failed" thread.

I dunno... I'd expect JP and US prices to be about what they were for PS1/PS2 (3900 yen and $299.99). More than that won't sit well with the public I think, especially with a nice new Xbox 360 or retro cool Revolution on shelves for less. I could see maybe an optional PSP style "Value Pack" for a $50-$100 premium, but not forced like the NA/EU PSP.

I'm expecting a 'value pack' at either $349 or $399. I suspect the PSP performance in the US was a test run for this pricing model.

RE: no shit.

No way is this $299. Please OWNZ me later if I'm wrong.

Well, given that the PS2 launched in Japan @ $369, that's not much of a stretch. Obviously, everything depends on what the 360's price is and which regions it launches in first.

If it doesn't launch until Fall 2006 in the US, it won't be as much as the Japansese price, just like with the PS2 & PSOne. (Although, Japan did get the PSP cheaper)

While this may be true, I have other priorities that come before games like a house payment, 2 car payments, and a host of other costs. If the PS3 debuts at over 300 bucks I think I might be waiting for the price to drop.

It's simple supply and demand people. They know PS3 will sell out, so why not charge more for it? People were paying $1000+ on eBay for PS2 when it came out and they'll do the same for PS3. They'll lower the price when they stop selling.

The % of people willing to pay what was on eBay back then is miniscule.

Not really, the PS2 only launched with 400k in the US and the demand was MUCH, MUCH greater than that. The problem is back then (and still now), many people either didn't feel comfortable or know enough to use Ebay.

I expect similary things for the 360. It's going to sell out immediately (day 1-3) and fetch a pretty price on EBay.
