"jUsT mAkE DiFFeReNt aSsEtS bRo!" is just a tone deaf argument, and the irony is you calling them lazy, when it's in fact you who's lazy (not them) who haven't read their announcement, are out here assuming a game's developer didn't think of this basic shit. If an online random internet poster can think of this, do you think the game's developer didn't?
Read the announcement. They literally posted why it isn't sustainable for them:
I read that and my point stands.
Gore: Literally as easy as not executing the parts of the code that leads to dismemberment. A single "if" in all places where that happens - even IF you completely shit the bed software development-wise and produced glorious pasta, this is very, VERY doable.
Nudity: Model/texture/animation swap - I think we all got this one, no?
Children: See gore.
Cross-Play: Now, this one here depends: If the changes done are more than cosmetic, then they do have a point.
While I am entirely correct in my claim that maintaining such asset changes (and code changes) is easy and not doing so simply lazy - if the animations affect things like hit boxes, etc. in multiplayer then obviously this would make it impossible to have different assets, regardless of how easy it would be to maintain.
So, you're an SDE, and are surprised about startups having to create and maintain separate forks in multiplatform development, being more time and resource consuming? I'm even more confused now.
You shouldn't maintain different forks per platform, that's the worst way to do it. At least if we're talking repositories.
Anyway, no, why would I be surprised?
I am saying it is extremely little effort. You are technically correct that it is more than not doing so, but by so little it shouldn't matter
if remaining uncensored was actually important to them.
But again, cross-play might be the actual roadblock here.
And I understand cross-play might be more important to them than keeping PC "clean" of censorship. I get it.
PC players can dismember dead bodys console players cant.....and cant even see that the PC player is dismembering the body????
So console players would see shooting PC players shoot around the body into nothingness - big fucking deal.
As a coder this should be a nightmare for you to just think about, so for you to say its a lazy excuse is almost insulting not only to the devs but to yourself and your profession.
Do better.
Because I am actually good at my job, none of this is a nightmare to think about.
It's fairly simple asset management.
But, see what I wrote before: It
is very easy to maintain separate assets and even builds - however, cross-play might make it simply impossible.
Not as in "it would be too much work", but as in "no amount of work can fix the issue".
I do believe they worded their announcement rather poorly.
