Real Pic January! | OT2 | The Enrealening

Did you miss the "skating on thin ice" PM from EvilLore stating that we are close to getting this entire shindig taken down because we're too much like a chat room and not "on topic" in an off-topic forum?

You get pms from evillore? woh.

No, I've been asleep. Evillore is right in one respect that this does become a chatroom of sorts. But it's also correct that, real gaf is about being real, showing your avatars and the conversations in here are about gaffers interacting with each other. The topic, and the point of this thread, is to be a gaffer, but to show your Real self in avatars, so he is also right that this thread is skirting on ice.

I'm not gonna put in my two cents, about how it ought to be really only for january, just so it stays true to the point of the topic, but that is how I, myself will treat it. I'm not going past january. Even if the thread stays alive, I mean. Publicity is a fire best left to privacy, I think, so this is like a vacation of sorts.

Bets on this thread closing have been shortened.

Thread should be in community and not exist past January I kind of agree. It's a cool thread but it really has become it's own random off topic community thread which there aren't many of in gaf. Just make an irc channel.

Well if we're ever in a situation where we need to get back onto a topic there is always the discussion of what the next avatar theme should be. I feel for you guys, we are like a chicken with no head right now.

Ducky got creepy PMs again?

At this point, I'd say the best policy would be to have her post the PMs so that the forum can publicly shame the offenders.

/sigh

Someday I hope to get get creepy PMs. Then I could feel special. :lol

Also, Devolution, I saw your pic in the Lady-GAF advises thread. I prefer your long hair. Just sayin. Since you clearly live your life based off what I think, I thought you should know.

Really? Didn't see anything about that. I think it's due to her modeling avatar, right?

I'd really appreciate it if we could post those people's names on here for humiliations sake, being banned is not enough in those creeper cases..

You know something, I just realized my fake stache avy would be much better if I had one my eyebrows arched (at the expense of having one of my eyes closed)

I'm gonna take a few more pics

EDIT: Only managed to get two pics taken before the battery life ran out, so I'll let it recharge for 30mins

Ah what the hell, I've been here almost 5 years, may as well show off the mug. Probably won't change the old av'y for a while now.

It's been all lengths but honestly I grow it that long anymore and it just gets stringy because I'm not taking the time out to do all that is necessary to keep thin long hair thicker. Not to mention that picture is more than 7 years old. Might go back to a bob or medium length (medium like the pic which is also old).

Managed to find a pic with my old vin diesel collage on my closet.

Just FYI if people are really angry about guidance to try to avoid devolving into a chat room, my suggestion would be to... create a chat room.

IRC is a very old chat protocol. It's very easy to use. You don't need to download any kind of program. You can just go to http://www.mibbit.com -- if you all agree on a server and a channel name, you can all chat in it. Most any server is good. Some of the biggest are DALNet and EFNet. There are a variety of gaming-forum/clan/game specific IRC servers so maybe try one of those. You can optionally register nicknames and set up in-chatroom moderators if those things are important to you.

Simple commands:
/join #channelname = join a channel. Mibbit also has a GUI way to do this
/me text goes here = * Yourname does this (used to differentiate text used for "actions" like "Stumpokapow is playing Seinfeld: The Facebook Game" versus regular sentences)
/nick newnickname = Changes your nickname to new nickname

Because Mibbit does IRC through the web, there's no risk of work filtering IRC as a service. They can still block the website, of course, but mostly employers don't so it's easy to keep a tab open.

This has been done in many times past, for different groups on GAF; sometimes people start an IRC chat room for E3, or for Smash Bros, or for whatever else. I know some of the other groups use Steam chats, like Aus (Australia)-GAF. Steam chat works really well too, and since Steam is a free service almost everyone here probably has, it'd be a great and easy way to set up a chat room.

Personally I think there are a lot of things chat rooms are better for than forums. Live watching events or TV shows, for example, can be done on forums (and is always fun on GAF) but it's probably better in a chat room. One advantage to a chat room is that once text scrolls off screen, people don't generally pay attention to it, and new people joining don't see text posted before they join, so it keeps conversation fresh and avoids the way a negative post or controversial post can derail things on a forum. I don't do a lot of "social" posting on GAF simply because forums aren't as good at this stuff as chat rooms are!

The guidance for avoiding devolving into a chat room is not something that's unique to this thread. It's something that's given to a lot of general purpose threads. It's given to the Steam thread. It's been given to a lot of the threads that have now moved to Community and it's given to threads that are currently in Community. It's not about ad impressions--and WOW it's really cynical to respond with "I'm giving you ad impressions, why do you care what we post?"--it's about generally keeping a good mix of topics on the front page, encouraging new users to participate, avoiding subcommunities getting too closed, etc. One of the reasons why GAF grew so fast and continues to grow is because despite the arduous registration/approval requirements, moderation generally favours making things accessible and open rather than closed or cliquish. I'm not trying to use the word clique negatively or infer that you guys are one, just to say that historically threads that devolve into chatting can be imposing to users who aren't a part of them. Side-note: It's amazing how angry people get about the smallest moderation decisions and how personally people take it!

Just expressing my personal opinion, this thread is time limited so I think it's less of an issue that something more open-ended, but no one is insulting anyone here by suggesting that there might be more appropriate fora for chat-style discussion. I really do recommend you guys get a chat channel, you seem to be fast friends and IRC is one of the best ways to turn a forum buddy into more of a long term friend.

I have not been involved in any moderation decision EviLore mentioned in PM, defer to what he said over me. I'm not breaking ranks or anything here, just offering my own personal opinion and explaining the rationale we've used historically to explain why we prefer threads in general stay relatively on topic. No need to quote me or take this as something official. Again, not official, not me moderating. Just giving some friendly advice and opinion :)

The problem is that, if they're trying to intimidate their target, making a big deal out of their behaviour publicly is a tacit admission that they succeeded. It's also tacky.

That makes baby jesus cry. Seriously Rinoa, meet me for lunch and I'll take you over to the phone store of your choice and get you an upgraded phone.

My blackberry bold has been good since 2008 but it doesn't scroll up well. My phone before that was a blueberry.... Thangs is tough and never die. I think this year I may have to suck it up and get a new one, but I'm old and I don't like changing to new technology.

Blistering barnacles!

So what neogaf community groups are there on steam?

The big public one is:
NeoGAF: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/neogaf

Other per-game groups that are pretty popular:
DOTA2: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/Dota2-Gaf
Left 4 Dead: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/GAF-L4D
Alien Swarm: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/alien-swarm-gaf
I'm sure there's a TF2 group as well

But a lot of smaller groups of people have their own groups, that are private or invite only. Like I mentioned, AusGAF: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/AusGAF -- I'm in an invite-only Steam group with some of my long-time GAF friends. I'm sure there are lots of mini-social circles on GAF who have ways of contacting each other outside of GAF whether it's a private forum, Twitter, IRC, Steam, or wherever else.

Really, fat kid?

I had the shirt when I was 16 and I'm still growing. I actually can't stand most t-shirts cut like that anymore either. I'm broad shouldered, so the fabric cut of a girl-tee is usually suffocating. That and my freakishly long arms are the reason I can't wear long sleeves and jackets right. I put my arm up and the sleeve falls to my elbow every time if it can even reach my wrist, it sucks.

You imply, I infer.

IRC chat rooms are fine and dandy, but don't do a lot of good for people like me who browse most of his GAF time on his phone.

Oh well, what's good for the many outweighs what's good for the few, or something like that.

There are plenty of IRC apps for phones. I've been rocking AndChat for months now and its been great. I even mod from it.

Thank you. A very informative post.

I noticed it's invite only so I need to be invited.

Put your Steam UN in your GAF profile and I'll invite you. I think any member of the Steam group can invite you (or at least I can and I'm not a moderator or admin of the Steam group). I actually don't remember it being invite-only in the past.

Chats are no good for most of what we do in this thread because you miss everything that you're not present for.

I like to be able to take 15 minutes to catch up on some hilarious back and forth conversation when I get home after being out of the house all day. Couldn't do that with a chat room.

Well the trick to it is that with IRC you're kind of expected to leave it idling in the background, so even if you only hop on for 15 minutes a day, you can optionally scroll back.

I agree. I like the feel of this as a thread. But if they don't want this sort of thing on GAF, I'm certainly not going to argue against it. It's their call.

Be cool if I got an invite too. Thanks.

Same. :( I browse Gaf intermittently and this was a nice thread to just come back and shoot the shit in a very slow way. In chat rooms everything just gets swallowed up by the new and it's pointless to be in there if everyone isn't in there as well. With RP I can follow up on old conversations in a natural way and at my own pace. Not a fan of the hectic feel of real chats. And, in most chats do you even 'see' who you're talking to? On TinyChat it was just user names if you didn't do the live feed. What would be the point of having an RP chat if our avatars didn't show? (Not that this is the main issue, though) :/

I understand what you're saying, Stumpokapow, and we'll definitely do whatever you guys want. It's just, even if it isn't a conventional thread, it does welcome in every new person, engenders good relations between us all and is an overall positive thread. I'd be sad if it went the way of a 'chat room' (in the real chat room sense) or got locked after all the good it's done. All good things must end, I suppose.
