Screw guitarists, lets show some love to the better instrument.

Favorite Bassists:

James Jamerson, Paul McCartney, John Entwistle, Charles Mingus

Thanks guys. It's on the 22nd, which (and I found out last night) is apparently one day before Kitsunebaby's.
You know you're going to need to give us a new avatar, right? I think I only have that one saved for you, we need something with more COLOR or at least contrast. :lol

His middle name is Doo-Doo

I'm jealous of your man beard. Its finely sculpted and you should be proud of it.

Thanks! Every time I shave it off, I start breaking out. I think my face is trying to tell me something. Good thing I can grow it back within a month.

If I knew you in person, I would get you so many Madlibs books with letters on the cover blacked out.

It would be a joke within a joke.

Took me longer than it should have to get it.

My name is pretty uncommon in the US. It is not that uncommon (or that common) in the UK.

Kieran.

Fire Embleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeem! I really like that name ever since I played that game.

My name is Phillip just spelled differently. It wasn't common in the US but here in Brazil Felipe (not my spelling) sounds the same and is a common name so I always think I'm being called. :[

John Paul Jones is so overlooked compared to the other three.

He was uh...instrumental to Zeppelin's sound.

I got a chance to see him play live with Them Crooked Vultures (also at the 2007 Led Zeppelin one-off reunion in London), and he really is one of the best bassists ever.

Les Claypool, Jack Bruce, Flea

yes, damnit, woops.

Jack Bruce is my first pick for bassists as well.

And on the topic of Zeppelin, all of them are amazing musicians in their own right but I don't care for their other work nearly as much. The combination of the individual elements they contributed to Zeppelin is what makes that music so great.

Better than Flea of RHCP or Les Claypool of Primus?

Edit: Ne'rmind... beaten long time ago for not reading the thread. Its hard reading it all when you're crosseyed.

Very different styles. Both of those guys play in very bass-centric bands. While both of them are better from a technical standpoint, I will say that JPJ has more technical ability than most people would think.

Interesting use of the bottle. :p

A real bottle neck (from wine or spirits) would have sounded better; beer-bottle glass is so friggin' cheap.

Which brings me to this question: Who is your favourite guitarist?

Hendrix, Derek Trucks, Eric Clapton, Freddie King, Mississippi John Hurt. So many others. I've really gone back from blues rock to straight up blues in the last decade.

Right now I'm watching some Youtube videos by Jack Pearson. He's pretty spectacular.

My favourite Clapton solo is this one

Here's mine— it's a shame the uploader didn't put the whole song up, the build up makes it even better. Hair on my neck was standing up at the end of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgHly8YZp8w

It's funny, until I'd heard him do it live, I didn't like the song, at all. My favourite period of his career was the mid-'90s when he was doing all the blues stuff (again- but better than when he was 18).

Oh my gosh this is so amazing.

.

Fuck, I forgot Brian May before.

I'm so sorry man.

True and wise. What really makes Zeppelin solos stand out- especially true solos like in Heartbreaker or Moby Dick- is the contrast of the intense individual talent against the backdrop of ever-present synergy between all four of them. Truly an historic group of musicians.

Yeah. When Bonham died, that was basically it. Very hard to replace such an incredibly talented drummer like him. It is the same really with a lot of bands that split up; they're solo work never seems to reach the same heights. The Beatles is a good example of this. Although, Harrison made a good album, and Lennon did some decent stuff, it was never really as good as the stuff they did together. I suppose it is the sum of all those parts.

And speaking of Bonham, I love is work he did in this song.

The Bonham shuffle. Not really a typical Zeppelin song really.

So real pic thread (especially the new people who haven't said anything yet), what's your darkest gaming guilty pleasure?

You know, games that you enjoy, but you're really kind of ashamed to? I have a couple:

- Dead or Alive. I enjoy it as an actual fighting game. Across DOA4 and Dimensions, I've put like 100 hours in to the game. My ex-girlfriend and I still play DOA4 a few times a week on Live!

- Final Fantasy XIII. My expectations for the game were so rock-bottom that as long as it ran, I would have been fine with it. But I ended up really liking the graphics and music and even the battle system.

Forgot Randy Rhodes and Tony Iommi earlier. Those guys would both be in my top 10 as well.

Persona series for goddamn sure. I would not play those games in front of friends.

Goodnight RP GAF. I've gotta get out of work. This place is making my eyes hurt.

Also, this thread today was seriously devoid of Lissar and H. Protagonist. I am disappoint.

I actually enjoyed Beyond the Beyond.

Oh fairly recent Clapton. That is a great solo. It is amazing how these great musicians keep going. The guy is 66 years old, and can still show the young 'uns a thing or two.

Yeah, I find it Funny that Fool in the Rain and D'yer Maker are some of the most often played Zep songs considering they sound nothing like the rest of their songs. Though I really like the fact that they experimented as much as they did in the later albums.

Achilles Last Stand, When the Levee Breaks, Dazed and Confused, and Since I've Been Lovin' You are the songs that best exemplify what Zeppelin was capable of.

Going to California, Tangerine, and That's the Way (among others) show their softer, more melodic side.

Friends, Kashmir, and The Battle of Evermore are really nice for their wide range of musical influences.

Carouselambra is a pretty awesome experimental song up until that awful keyboard riff late in the song. The buildup is really great, except for the fact that it's building up to that cheesy riff.

D'Yer Maker also would up being very influential.

But yeah, When the Levee Breaks is my favorite. One song I can just listen to to get geared up for basically anything.

This and Trampled Under Foot are the ultimate rev-up Zeppelin songs.

As far as relaxing Zep songs, Thank You has been growing on me as of late.

Dazed and Confused will always be my favorite Led Zeppelin song

I try to pick a favorite but it changes all the time.
