Found this at Futureshop yesterday. It was their only copy.

This is pure X-Com goodness! Without the global map, but the missions are proving to be great. The graphics is solid and its basically X-Com's battle engine refitted for the GBA with added features such as line of sight verification for both the player and the enemies and a turn cap on each mission.

Great game to have around for the DS or Micro.

Probably underproduced with limited supplies. It's a shame really. The game is solid and fits the portable gaming needs perfectly.

It has onboard save as well, so no passwords required.

this is like laser squad? oh man o much i love ls on amiga

It's a solid game - would like to see another one made by these guys on the DS with more X-Com-like features/enhanced graphics. Give me a global map, too, and the ability to kneel...

ordered mine from dvdboxoffice - only £13. Chose to skip AWDS in place of this - only have time for one strategy game at the moment.

Fingers crossed it'll be a good one.

Did the same a couple of weeks ago, still not heard anything from them and decided to go with Ebay instead (which turned out to be cheaper as well).

doh! re-registered and everything. Avoided videogamesplus cause they charge for shipping now. Got an ebay link?

Just ordered my copy from EBGames.com. I would hate to miss out on it, and $19.99 is cheap as hell for a brand new (high quality) GBA game, too.

I don't know much about this game. Is the gameplay just like Advance Wars? Turn-based, multiple unit strategy and all that?

Just bumping this, because this is a gem for X-Com fans!
X-com port for DS, is that even possible? :/ would be great.

I've played through the first few missions. It's pretty damn good, though a bit slow. The interface is also needlessly convoluted, IMHO.

I bought this game a couple weeks ago and found it to be a complete dud. I've had really good luck with random impulse purchases in the past, but I played this one for about 4 missions and already know I'm never going back to it :(

One knock against Rebelstar is its lack of variety. I don't know what cartridge size they used for this game but seems like Namco gave them the smallest cartridge possible. Most of the game is played in the same tileset as the first 4 or so training missions. It gets old fast.

Not that X-com had a lot of variety, but it had more variety than Rebelstar :(

As for X-com coming to DS, it's technically possible even with a graphical upgrade. But it depends on how well the slate of DS strategy games will do this year,

4 missions? You're still in the freakin' tutorial. Have you even begun party combat at that point? I don't think so...

Blech.

This one ended up annoying the living shit out of me. Turned out to be more trial & error than true strategy. Not my thing.

opportunity fire kicking your ass?

Well mine apparantly shipped last week, but still no sign of it here. Broke down and bought AWDS, so could get messy

Yeah :D

If I were to really sit down with it and learn, I would probably get into it more. It's an impressive GBA game, but AW is taking up all my turn-based gaming time right now.

it is very different from AW and other console Strategy games. Does take some getting used to - as does not using up all your action points so you can return the favour.

My copy just arrived at the office 5 minutes ago (THANK YOU DEMI - GAF ADMINS UNBAN THIS MAN!!! HE'S A SAINT!!!!) and ive done nothing but smile at the box like an idiot. Cannot friggin' wait to play it. Only an hour until lunchtime!! (Starts charging the GBA)

One question (I haven't opened the box yet) - can you rename characters? Do the characters yous tart with stay through to the end of the game...?

Well I almost turned up late to work today because I stayed up way too late last night playing this. Wow. What a fantastic game. This is 2D turn based strategical blissiness. I’m a big Laser Squad fan (played the hell out of the C64 game, and last year sunk a load of time and money into Laser Squad Nemesis, which this game borrows heavily from) and this is Laser Squad in my pocket. Or desk. Or anywhere.

The menu system works well, everything’s explained in a coherent way, and I get to throw grenades. Sweet, parabolic balls of death, how I missed you. The coloured tiles are a fantastic touch – I don’t have to count my AP before moving - and Overwatch is very useful once you figure it out. It’s really satisfying thinking of new strategies and actually seeing them work in the field. Oh and there’s a skirmish mode! Yay!

And to those who piss and moan about there being no X-Com style world interface or research…well, this is more Laser Squad than X-Com, and that game did fine without it…and buy the damn game anyway so they’ll make a sequel that will make you happy, you whiny fuck. As it stands this is probably the most dangerous thing for me to have in my GBA until they release a port of Civilization 2.

Would I change anything? Hmm. I would have made it so when a character dies, you can still play (and when you get back to base they are replaced with a fresh recruit, so it’s in your interest to keep the veterans alive as long as possible). Lack of link mode doesn’t bother me a lot since I have access to a GB Player and I don’t have any friends anyway, but still. Oh yeah I wish the main character’s name wasn’t Jorel, but that’s just because I have Jason Mewes saying “Oh son of Jor-El, kneel before Zod!” in my head every time I see it.

Ruby seems to have freckles when I play this on a GB Player, but not on a SP. Either way she’s cute and I want to buy her candy. :(

OK, this took way too much time to write and I can’t make coherent sentences now and every time I close my eyes I see the game playing in my head and I have a deadline on for today and FUCK I need sleep damn you Codo and Namco.

Been playing it for a bit, and it's fuckin' awesome. TURN BASED TACTICS! DESTRUCTIBLE ENVIRONMENTS!

to the tbs games: sorry baby I said bad things about you, but i love you again

In summary: it's a little rough around the edges, but it's the most solid strat game on the GBA.

I like it somewhat

altho the "made by the makers of xcom" on the demo reel is a bit misleading

(no geoscape ftl!)

just makes me want a real xcom game but thatll never happen again *sigh*

I'm up to chapter 15, which frustrated the hell out of me last night because
you're supposed to destroy all the eggs on the map, but I guess one of them is hidden behind a wall because I destroyed them all and still lost WTF.

I love this game so much. I thought I knew what love was when I was playing it a week ago, but then I found how I could equip the characters and deploy them on different areas of the map and set up which characters I would have in the party and not have to make sure they all survived and NOW I know what true love is. Its like a relationship that started off with intense lust just got really deep and personal. God, I am so gay for this game :)

And seriously anyone who complains that it's not X-Com really needs a history lesson about a game called Laser Squad, because THAT is what this game is all about.

Hey Gaz, after you get done with Rebelstar, play some Tak: The Great Juju Challenge on DS--it set the bar for any Ty DS projects you guys at Krome have.

That's the one major bug in the game -- make sure you
only use melee weapons on the eggs
. I luckily had read around before getting that far in the game, because lord knows I never would have thought to do it myself.

I'm pretty gay for the game too, especially now again on Micro, both of which have become my constant companion. Gez Fry's character art is stunning (and has massive street cred after learning that he's also worked on a Viktor Vaughn cover) -- it's a shame that Namco chose to make a bid for the longtime fans by referencing Laser Squad Nemesis' cover art for the Rebelstar box, when using what I can only imagine was meant to be Gez's cover (judging by the filename):

gez_rebelstar_boxart.jpg

might have pulled in the more casual Advance Wars/Fire Emblem contingent that inspired the move to the handheld in the first place.

It's also a shame it has yet to find a European publisher (so far as I know), where people are about 100% more likely to recognize the name Rebelstar, so it wouldn't have to struggle quite as hard to escape the shadow of X-com and all of the expectations that it brings -- though I suppose most of those that cared would have imported it already.

Really just can't get enough of it.

Been playing it recently and it is a good xcom-lite. I do have a few gripes with it though, mostly regarding the presentation/interface:
- That Bronstein art sure clashes with the rest of the artwork.
- When equipping a squad before a mission I'd like to know what the current stats are for my characters. Am I missing something here?
- It's slooooooooow. It seems to take ages to move and the enemy turn takes way too long. I'm not sure if this is an intentional pause or whether's it's calculating pi to the 1000000th decimal in the background.

So far (mission 16) my main units are
Jorel (assault rifle, grenades, main point man)
Zak (chaingun, rocket launcher, heavy weapons guy)
Ruby (sniper rifle, 108% accuracy woot)
Carlos (sniper rifle, but also grenade duty)
Sapphire (medikit duty, grenades)
Eris (medikit duty, grenades, smg)

I'm feeling I'm not using Eris properly and her stats are weak, but I can't be arsed to use Gordo, and Glen is pretty much ignored as well.

Yeah, and also an earlier game called

Oooh. Thanks very much! So much for
using the fire grenades to take them out from afar. But does "melee" mean I have to use the knives or can I use regular guns? Because I can't seem to reach the big pile of them in the inaccessible room...
:)

And that Gez Fry artwork is awesome. Thanks so much for posting that. I'm now a fan :)

Like myself. I guess it's just not worth it to release a non "big name" title for GBA in non-US territories these days. :( It's absolutely criminal - I can think of 40 people in this building alone who were huge fans of Rebelstar / Laser Squad / X-Com. I know it always draws a crowd when I play it on the GB Player during lunch :)

(Wonders if there's a way to play this online via emulators and such - haven't people been able to do this with Advance Wars?)

Sorry,
"close combat" weaponry, I guess I should've said -- knives or the stun-rod will work, though I seemed to have more success with the knives. I think I remember the room you're referring to, and thought it was inaccessible at first, too, but if you trace your way around the inside of the hive counterclockwise you should end up in that largest room last and mop up the rest of the eggs.

I didn't really notice this until mission 15, but yeah, it can suck. It's not so bad when you can see the enemies moving, but when they're out of visual range it's like the GBA crashed. I remember similar gripes when I played Laser Squad on the C64. :)

I would much rather have long waits and good AI than short waits and dumb AI, you know?

No,
you can definitely use guns, grenades, rocket launchers etc. Just don't use anything that causes fires.
