ReCore |OT| Rock Your Core for a Prime Bot

Never underestimate how far you can get off the end of a spider rail. It flips you up in a direction, boost, jump jump. Should make the top of the tower easily.

The more people I see reviewing this game, the more I get the sense that it's simply a worse experience for reviewers than it is for regular players.

I completed my leisurely run over the space of two weeks, but thinking back on the experience I wonder if I might've grown to hate the game if I'd had to knock it over in a few days like many of the reviewers would've had to. The game does see you doing a lot of the same few activities, and while that didn't bother me at the pace I was playing, I could see it becoming maddening in a marathon context.

I think there's something to this. I've noticed it especially during sections with tricky jumps. How many frustrating encounters like that can one encounter while under deadline before one's opinion of the game begins to suffer? Contrast it with someone, like me, who plays an hour a night. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to learn that many games suffer lower scores due to the conditions under which many reviewers must grapple with them. As far as I'm concerned, it's one more reason to move away from review scores.

I'm currently at the Bolt Cutter boss. Tried a couple times this morning and died pretty quick. I think my gun is around level 17 or so. Mack and Seth haven't reached level 20 yet. I'm thinking I'm going to go back to my crawler, upgrade them where possible and then do some side dungeons to get a little stronger. Sound like a good plan given my levels?

This is the reason why review scores never impact what games I'm going to buy. I usually judge them by video, and a little background of what the game is about. Game reviewers have a job to do, my games aren't my job and I don't score games and what I do say about them far varies what a score bring to the table.

I still haven't finished the story, I'm at like 56 cores or something I forget as I'm still trying to beat dungeons and find some cellbots (without any help). The joys/pain of exploratory games. I think with a bigger budget and some better management that ReCore could be an awesome franchise. I think the same of QB (well, more on just making another one with less or no film time and more action, the budget seemed fine to me) even though it seems that we won't get another one of those.

I agree with the positive feelings about the game, but we mustn't overlook the bugs and lack of signposting re: progression gates that would have eased so much frustration for those who did rush it a bit.

I haven't had any trouble with the lack of signposting, but that's down to my habit of venturing off the critical path. It's clearly been an issue for some players, though. But I agree: the game is a bit rough around the edges, and I'm not just talking about bugs or load time. The story is probably where it shows most clearly; it's haphazardly and intermittently told. I'd rather make up my own story about Far Eden and Joule's role in its development (or lack thereof).

In its early hours, for example, ReCore feels like nothing so much as Rey's life as a Tatooine scavenger. Barely glimpsed in The Force Awakens, this life on the margins hinted at powerful storytelling possibilities (mostly ignored in that film, alas). My favorite moments in ReCore are those that allow me to pick up this thread and run with it.

I too ventured off the path, and consider that the whole point of games like this, but some players won't, and all reasonable approaches should be considered - if only to make them seem unreasonable in a fair way ;)

Possible I'm playing wrong (so feel free to tell me), but when I go to extract a core from an enemy, I often get flanked from another enemy because they so often attack in groups, and then I'm not able to complete the 'pulling' mini game. What's the best way to tackle that? Combat feels good but the extraction stuff really kills it for me. Or should I not even care about extraction and just get on with shooting instead.

I really kind of hate the pulling minigame.

If there are a lot of enemies, I avoid extracting so I can protect myself.

I also try to keep my combo up which leads to an Instant Extraction. This ends the combo chain but causes an explosion to happen and can effectively weaken or destroy the other enemies.

If there are only one or two enemies, then I do the extraction when it comes up because I think they're fun to do.

Keep in mind that any enemy that has a Prismatic Core must have its core extracted to destroy it.

Keep in mind there is a trade off with extracting. If you extract you get lots of core energy (or whatever it is called) but no loot. If you kill, you get loot but less core energy. So best to mix it up. Generally I would kill some and extract the last guy standing.

But in general you will get plenty of stuff to build your blueprints by just playing and doing what makes sense at the time. If you want to max out your cores or get that achievement for collecting money you are going to have to grind a lot (or boost, which I imagine people have found ways to do).

I don't remember how I dealt with that particular boss, but I'd say your plan is a good one regardless. Any time you're feeling underpowered, I'd say hit up dungeons, open as many chests as you can find and power up your bots as much as possible.

I agree with the positive feelings about the game, but we mustn't overlook the bugs and lack of signposting re: progression gates that would have eased so much frustration for those who did rush it a bit.

Don't get me wrong, I still think the game is a pretty flawed one overall. Always interesting to see the different interpretations, though.

I would usually save extraction for the last foe in the room, or on some occasions break it out if a quiet window came up (if the other enemies were busy with Mack or whatever). Also worth keeping in mind that the extraction mechanic is much, much quicker on really low health enemies.

So I just saw that the company that creates the Killer Instinct figures is going to be doing at least 2 sets of figures for ReCore next year. I wonder why Microsoft would release a game in this state but still "care" enough about it to do things like the CE, artbook, heavy promotion at trade shows and now these figures.

For the record I do like a good amount of what's in ReCore; I'm just disappointed Microsoft got behind the game in a rather big way but still, when all was said and done, released it with the bugs, performances issues and missing frame.

They actually look pretty great.

As you say, it does seem kinda weird that the game released looking very much like it was starved for money and time, and yet they're throwing all this weight into marketing and merchandising the thing.

Guys I am IN.

Bored with all the games I'm playing now, so didn't even wait for a copy this time, just went in and bought it on console.

Looking forward to it!

If I play on Xbox and then download on my PC, does my save file carry too? Is it any better on a good PC rig or the same?

Not sure about the saves, but I'd definitely opt for PC if your machine is up to it. I played at 1620p (downsampled to 1080p) with everything cranked for a solid 60fps, and my machine isn't particularly beefy.

I also ran into very few technical issues, and the loading times were all well under 15 seconds.

Runs great on my machine and my CPU is below spec. I'm not running at 1080p mind you (monitor is only 1400 x 900) but I was still surprised by the performance.

And yes, your game saves sync. Nothing like moving between Xbox and PC seamlessly like they're the same machine. It's a long shot, but I hope third party games start supporting XPA in the future.

Beat Bolt Cutter last night on the third try. Don't ignore the fliers -- they'll repeatedly kidnap your bot buddy and put you at a major disadvantage. And though it's a cinch to smash Cutter down to extraction, you'll get creamed by his flankers if you haven't taken them out first.

So take your time, eliminate the supports, and then make full use of shield break + lethal move.

Stupid question, but do the stat bonuses from the various pieces of corebot equipment affect the bots themselves, or Joule?

I've just beaten Bolt Cutter and realised I haven't even touched the upgrade system at all.

Joule doesn't level up, but her gun does.

Corebots level up, but also are strengthened by finding blueprints and then crafting them with the parts you find. Parts can be broken down or combined to make them what you might need (for instance, 3 worn wires make 1 sturdy wire). Also, Core Fusion you find by extracting cores and finding shards (blue, red, and yellow) can be added to a core which will also strengthen your corebot.

Being that you just realized this, I'm surprised you got past the Bolt Cutter. I had trouble with him and I've been fine tuning my corebots every step of the way. In fact, I left that area to level up and get stronger before I return.

It respawned me on some rocks that I kept falling through. Couldn't dash or jump far enough to get back to a platform. It helped me make the decision to just finish it and move on instead of trying to complete more of it.

Can I get a little help? At the final boss fight:

His health is gone, not even a sliver of it left, and it's not giving me an option to extract his core. It just keeps breaking my line and telling me he's too strong/have to weaken him. I get the instant extract option for the other bots he summons, but it does not appear for him. When he's stunned and I shoot him it just says "RESIST" even when I match the color. What am I doing wrong?

I've watched a few videos of this boss fight and it appears that he's supposed to lose all his parts and head back to the large prismatic core, giving me the opportunity to extract for the final time, but he's not losing his parts. He's not even taking damage any more. : /

Really enjoying the game, the platforming with Seth is super fun, and apparently there's a new patch coming next week for the load times;

http://www.recoregame.com/oct-5th-recore-update/

Good to see they're working on a bunch of fixes. I may put it down for now and wait until the patch is out before playing any more.

I really do want to keep exploring and find everything, but some of the glitches are immensely discouraging.

Thanks for the tips guys, switched to the Windows version. Kind of cool that you can seamlessly jump between platforms on the same save. I set all settings to Ultra and frame rate to Maximum and we are rocking

Finally finished it just now. Did something bug out or does the game just quit to title screen after you're done? No credits or anything, felt kinda sudden.

I hate everything about Eden Tower. The early hours of the game were so great, but the first thing that really annoyed was locking you out of every frame. Exploration feels like a chore when you can't have every upgrade on the fly, and you have to switch out bots when you don't have the required one for a core. There was one core I reached after doing a bunch of jumps/spider tracks, only to see I needed Duncans power to break the rock.

Then you get to Eden Tower, which just keeps going and going... and going. Seemed endless. It's a shame how this game fell completely apart for me by the end.

I actually ended up enjoying Eden Tower more than I thought I would. After the first floor I was feeling a bit "Oh god, now I have to do that like four more times?", but pretty soon I started to enjoy them in the same way I enjoyed the traversal dungeons.

I definitely could've done without the samey Tron-esque visuals on every floor, but that was ultimately my biggest complaint.
That and the time on one of the later floors where my robot pals vanished and I had to do a couple of fights without them.

TripOpt55

I had about 42 cores when I started Eden Tower. I think I may have been better off actually spreading more of my exploration for cores between each floor. I enjoyed the platforming and puzzles in the Tower, but playing them one after another didn't feel ideal to me. I also agree some more visual variety would have helped (that goes for the whole game to be honest).

Hmm something definitely bugged out then. I got a scene
with Kai on the monitor
and then it quit to title screen.

It was, for the first couple of floors. By the third floor it was getting repetitive, couldn't wait for it to end.

Oh, well then you got the after credits scene. Maybe you hit a button to skip the credits.

Major fixes out to the Windows Store to address download issues related to updates and preloads.

Get the latest update from available now in Windows Update. You'll know if you have the update by seeing 14393.222 if you do start-->winver

I'm on the latest insider build and the last three builds have been giving me problems with Recore specifically.

Once Recore logs me in, the game closes and the Windows Store app opens to the Recore product page. I own the game and it shows on the store page so I don't know why its doing this.

Any idea what's going on?

Same here and for many other Insiders, really considering giving up with Insider slow/fast and format back to production... Really tired or Insiders bugs that are getting too much frequent since a few months.

At least I can play on Xbox One for now...

If you're on insider builds then what I posted above won't help. Insider will always have a large set of bugs which don't exist in production builds, which is why they're not production builds yet.

Well it took a while but I finally managed to get past the sludge in the lonely basin on the right hand side and get through the door to the get to the south side shifting sands. Worst part is that even though I walked through that door I can't go back the same way, oh well good thing there's fast warp

Now I'm going to try the other sludge by kai's crawler

I've got a question about the complaints regarding now being limited to two corebots at a time. I've played about 12 hours and have 26 cores, just beat the Core Foundry and then got Duncan. Not mainlining the story so maybe the complaint is related to later parts of the game.

Don't all dungeons show you what corebots you'll need for that dungeon? I understand the "open" world areas would requiring switching around to obtain objectives like loot and prismatic cores. But they appear to give you the info you need to progress through dungeons.

Yeah the dungeons do tell you what bot is required, maybe people just don't realise it and there's plenty of fast warp points around to change if need be. The only issue is, is when you get the ability to swap around cores, that can only be done at the workbench

It's shown for dungeons, the problem lies more in the open world cores. There was one core that took me some time to reach, and when i got there it was covered in rocks only the Duncan frame could break. So I had to warp back to the loader, switch and make the trip again. It's just baffling that, at least in the open world, you don't have access to all your abilities at once. Even if it's not an issue for the dungeons, it's just a decision that doesn't make any sense.

Whoop! Patience prevails, managed to get past the sludge in the cradle, there's even a fast travel station and a dungeon door requiring 4 locks but the loot pickups are all bronze

Edit: found all four cellbots and unlocked the quicksand rally dungeon, though a quick search shows I'm not the only one :(

This recently caught my eye, and I'm puzzled the reviews. All of the footage I've watched of this looks awesome.

As someone who finished the game and loved it, it's a weird position to be in. There's definitely a lot in the way of flaws (you can find plenty of details in this thread), but there's a lot to love too.

Oh neat, are these the areas that the Tank corebot would provide access to? I didn't know you could get to them at the moment.

Yeah you can get to them as long as you have the fl-1 frame, there's even a dungeon with 2 prismatic cores, (which has now added to my total, so not sure what will happen should i get all of the other prismatic cores) plus parts for the tank frame

It is a shame the game was rushed out, there's just loads of areas void of nothing where you feel there should be something there

I really, REALLY like this game... but I'm also afraid of trying to collect everything.

I loved Lost Planet (1 and 2) and this game gives me that sort of vibe with some Metroid Prime thrown in (and some Megaman)... I can't make my mind up though, to play this on the Xbone or on my Book. My Book looks better and performs better, but I find myself not being able to sit down and play for a long time without checking chat or work/school stuff.

Average time to beat?

Also I've been listening to I'll Take You (feature in the Trailer) on repeat. I really wish that this game had that sort of music. I might play with a custom soundtrack.

When Destructoid asked Microsoft where Tanky went, they responded with this:

Microsoft said:
The Tank is not currently available in the game. But please stay tuned for news.

So likely coming as DLC. I'd guess probably free DLC, given that the Tank appears on the box art and everything.

I'm seeing somewhere in the region of 8 hours for story only, and you could easily double that for explorers. I spent a lot of time exploring and doing side dungeons and I'm at around 20 hours.

Oh that's really good. I can do that before R2 comes (which I imagine I'll blow through real quick as for its Campaign).

Quitting Destiny and retaking a Year I got an A is freeing up a lot of time, especially since most of the games I wanna play come next year ;)

ReCore is such a blessing.
