If I was in that situation I would have just ordered "Chicken Nuggets" for my son because that's clearly a typo

The racist asshole could potentially bring legal action for posting his receipt is what Red Lobster was thinking imo. Businesses gonna act like businesses.

Publically Shaming someone is just as bad.
Nope.

Not when you're a racist asshole who emotionally and financially affects a person's day. They shamed her. I'm sure said customer is no stranger to similar incidents. Fuck them. Let them shamed.

Suspended with full pay is hardly a punishment. Thats a vacation to me!

So the joke's on the racist asshole.

Does full pay include an average of how much she typically makes in tips as well? If not, then it's hardly a vacation. I don't know how much Red Lobster servers make per hour, but in most places it's less than $4/hr.

Yes. The real issue is not the girl posting the racism, it's the fact that she posted the FULL, unaltered receipt online.
She essentially posted a private business transaction record to the masses, and the restaurant could be liable for damages.

That's why I REALLY wished she could have just displayed the racist parts and nothing else (especially not the person's signature).

I really hope everything turns out for the best for this poor girl. The last thing she needs is to get fired over something like this.

Didn't something happen at an Applebee's like a year ago that was tangentially similar? Like some waitress posted a receipt to shame a customer?

Not saying this guy is write or anything but the "None N*****" hand writing doesn't match the hand writing for the signature. But than again someone else could of wrote it.

Ain't nobody got time for that.

She should have redacted the restaurant name at the very least. When you do this kind of thing, you basically force your employer's hand.

...Welp I'm out of here. If you guys don't understanding that public shaming, in this case, makes her company look bad(That's why she's suspended), and well, right now we have mob rule in this thread. Whilst the asshole who wrote this is an asshole, the waitress/waiter isn't helping their own situation by taking it to the internet. in fact it just made it worse for the waiter.

bye.

If this guy just left no tip and the server wrote that in to post a picture he is going to get paid in a lawsuit for defamation

I doubt the restaurant's name was the issue. She leaked a customer's personal information onto the Internet. At virtually any place dealing with customer information this would be grounds for automatic termination.

If by worse you mean more discussed the-- oh sorry, you're out of here, have a nice night.

A lot of people here don't seem to get that. It's blowing my mind. But I guess that explains why tipping is such a hot topic on GAF haha.
Is this an American thing where servers are paid less than minimum wage? Because, isn't that like, illegal? I'm in Canada and I'm pretty sure servers here make minimum wage, so I really don't understand why they can be so entitled about tips.

Yep. It's a great way for companies to pay less than min wage. Sad thing is people buy that narrative, so they hinder any kind of living wage.

Well, if everyones going to overreact...she could've done it better by removing the restaurant like others said, maybe the last name, but in the end the only person who's going to be shamed is...well, the waiter who's suspended. It's a sad situation all around.

But, if you wish to start a discussion, would you like to enlighten me on times where public shaming was alright?

It doesn't just make the company look bad...it's a breach of privacy laws.

Receipts are the property of the company and the customer. The waitress has no legal right to post it to social media.

Remember that woman from Applebees who posted the "I give God 10%, why do you get 18%" receipt? She got fired, because sharing confidential financial records that contain private, personally-identifying information isn't legal.

To bad that wont include tips. Her base pay is likely shit.

Employers are only allowed to take the tip credit (which reduces the $7 and change federal minimum wage down to $2 and change) in cases where the employee is actually earning tips. Since she's suspended, she's not earning tips, they can't take the credit. So she's got to be getting at least the federal minimum wage right now.

...which is still pretty shitty, but not as low as the $2.13 that's getting thrown around.

Oh, goodness, you're back. I suppose the time when the people responsible for spreading the photos of an underage girl blowing someone at a music concert while drunk were publicly shamed and had their Twitter accounts suspended. Or the time when the people responsible for raping an unconscious girl at a highschool football party were publicly shamed and subsequently arrested...

Those kind of people deserve the public shaming so no, it's not just as bad.

But dragging your work into it is alright for it? (Is the employee a man or woman? Would help the grammar, I'll keep using Waiter) The waiter probably didn't know the risk of doing what they did, but in the end even though yes, the person on the receipt may be embarrassed or shamed, not only is there no repercussion against them(The racist) that we know of, but the only person who's hurt right now is the waiter.

That's why I think it's a bad thing to publically shame somebody never ends well. Now, when I said 'I'm out of here', that was to the well...people freaking out about I said without asking why I said it.

I'm fine with having a discussion, but if all people are going to do is say 'wow' 'really?' It's like...whoa, got off the wrong foot here.

Because raping or posting pictures of an underage girl is equivalent to somebody writing down a racist comment to a waiter.

Um....that's not...a good way to start a conversation, not with false equivalencies.

You didn't ask me for equivalencies, you asked me for other times when public shaming was warranted. Weren't you going to bed?

Looks like it could potentially be fake to me. Not saying it is but it is a possibility. Restaurant receipts should not be posted on social media.

This makes me feel better.

Different situations. . When it's something like written word that in the end, is another asshole, something that hundreds upon thousands of people of any race, culture, religion, or color face...there's nothing you can do about someone writing that on your receipt other than publically shame, but that didn't turn out good for the waiter in this case.

Looking at the photo - Did she take that picture at the table the racist guy was eating at? I would probably flip out if I saw a server whip out their iPhone to take a picture of a customer's receipt, no way for an onlooker to know it had hate speech on it.
