Red Lobster employee suspended after posting racist receipt online

Different situations. . When it's something like written word that in the end, is another asshole, something that hundreds upon thousands of people of any race, culture, religion, or color face...there's nothing you can do about someone writing that on your receipt other than publically shame, but that didn't turn out good for the waiter in this case.

So I supposed you think sites like this http://publicshaming.tumblr.com/ are just as bad as the people posting the racist, homophobic and misogynistic nonsense?

If she had marked out the signature, credit card number and store # I think she wouldn't have gotten in trouble, probably. Still the act is gross (talking about the customer).

Employers are only allowed to take the tip credit (which reduces the $7 and change federal minimum wage down to $2 and change) in cases where the employee is actually earning tips. Since she's suspended, she's not earning tips, they can't take the credit. So she's got to be getting at least the federal minimum wage right now.

...which is still pretty shitty, but not as low as the $2.13 that's getting thrown around.

I assumed that would be the case, but wasn't sure. She made out decently then.

what exactly is "public shaming" accomplishing here? Aside from weirdo internet detectives who will trace her back from her signature, nobody else is going to know who this person is. It really sucks that this happened to this girl, and I would hope that if she would bring it up privately to her employer/company they would back her up and maybe ban the customer from the restaurant, but really all she is doing is needlessly putting her own ass on the line if her company has strict policies regarding this (which many do).

Yup. Nobody gained anything out of this.

Well, that's basically it though, isn't it? That name is out there, someone will trace it back, and then there'll be a photo and a facebook account and people will know exactly who decided to pay for their tepid, food-colored fish dinner with racial slurs.

I'd imagine that's the only real reason to put something like this on the internet at all.

Well, that and some sympathy and reassurance people will publicly denounce racism as a means of comforting you after a bad day at work, I guess.

Not to spark discussion, no way no how. Discussion sucks. I discussed something once and it was terrible.

What discussion is going to get sparked that's going to have any meaning beyond "what an asshole?"

That's not discussion. That's affirmation.

But a discussion doesn't have to break out to establish the fact that people who would write such a thing on a reciept as their "tip" are assholes. It's pretty self-evident :)

She put it on her facebook - you think she was hoping a good discussion about the nuances of racial differences was gonna break out in the comments section?

But the question as to why certain people think this is appropriate behaviour is. We can't just ignore that racism happens -- the more we hear about it the more a part of public consciousness it is.

I get what you're saying, but you're drawing a false equivalency: Saying that there's no real discussion to be had isn't the same as advocating anyone ignore that racism happens. I'm not even saying she shouldn't have posted the receipt. I was pointing out that Ninja Scooter had answered his own question in one manner, and pointed out the other, more probable reason the thing got posted: Because it was something fucked up that happened at work and she wanted some "Holy shit what an asshole" responses so as to feel support from the people she calls friends.

That's not really a discussion - again, that's affirmation. Which is cool.

She likely wanted affirmation, but isn't this thread proof that discussion will result regardless?

Nobody thinks it's appropriate behavior, atleast I hope they don't in this thread. . However everyone saying in unison, 'What an asshole', 'what a racist' etc, isn't really developing a conversation. It's basic mob rule. No conversation to be developed from that.

I think it's telling that even in this thread there are people who would rather believe that she faked it than that it's possible that it actually happened. That's indicative of the fact that maybe we need more people to say in unison that it's wrong, or more people to post pictures or examples of the racism they encounter day to day so that it's made abundantly clear that it's actually a problem.

Yeah, but that's not the question Ninja asked. Unless you're arguing that she posted that SPECIFICALLY in the hopes people on a completely unrelated video game messageboard would start a discussion about why people in 2013 are still racist shitbags in public. :)

Discussion on ANYTHING will result on a messageboard. There are people catching legitmate feelings over the fucking Kimmel twerk video in here. Reddit is probably going to make some hay over it, but that's essentially the same situation.

I fundamentally agree with the idea that people who are racist shitbags in public should have a spotlight shone on them, as bright as possible.

Red Lobster's official policy regarding merchant receipts (Darden confidential information / assets):

Unfortunately, like most businesses, it looks like they have a very strict policy when it comes to sharing stuff like receipts.

So it's completely impossible to think that she faked it? I've seen people fake worse than some writing in a receipt. It's definitely not out of the line.

Did the customer really write that, though? How do we know that she wasn't so mad at not getting a tip that she wrote it to ruin the customer's reputation?

Fuck viral. Two weeks later Jimmy Kimmel pops up and explains the signature means "gotcha!" in reverse braille.

Yeah she shouldn't have posted a picture of the receipt as that could get the company in trouble and her fired (with good reason.) Just talking about it on fb (maybe with an edited picture to leave red lobster out of it) would have served the same purpose.

People who are saying she is getting a vacation seem to forget that sometimes 'suspension' is followed by termination. They use that to evaluate the situation. When she gets back from suspension, she might get fired.

Suspension with pay likely means that it's being investigated. The customer could easily say he/she didn't write it, just as easily as she could have written it herself

Nah, they really don't. I don't really want to live in a world where it's up to someone else's discretion to post shit I do all over the internet when I'm at their place of business.
If someone is worried about coming off like a racist they probably shouldn't do something blatantly racist.

It's messed up, but she should have known from all the other receipt posting incidents that it was not a good idea.

Wait a minute, suspended with full pay? Karma beams are gangster. And what info can you get from that picture, other than that the signature starts with a D?

Damn, forgot waitress salary is basically tips-but if she's getting tips like this one...

Even if you are a racist asshole why in the hell would you insult the person who brings you your food?! Fucking hell I'm super nice to people at restaurants, I don't want a booger put in my meal!

So you're worried about people posting an image of you writing nigger on a receipt?

If I was the type of person to do something that shitty, it wouldn't make it any less of an invasion of my personal rights to have the employee decide to post my receipt online. Company policy is company policy. People lose their jobs every day for running into an asshole customer then running to Facebook to tell the world about them. This is NOT AN ACCEPTABLE PRACTICE.

Fuck it, glad she posted that.

Public shaming is the best way to combat a prejudice prick.

This.

I hate the growing attitude that any form of documenting (or 'doxxing') bigotry is wrong.

It isn't. Fuck the customer, may his/her employment prospects be ruined for being a racist piece of shit.

Hopefully it isn't true that a customer wrote it cause that's just sad. Then again I have seen some sketchy ass folks at Red Lobster. Honestly though would someone just lie on the internet? Highly unbelievable.

Too fucking bad! If I do something as stupid and offensive as this, then I have expect some sort of response. Is it too difficult for you to go to a fucking restaurant and eat your damn food without writing nigger on a receipt?

It is ridiculous that some people think a negative response to racism is worse than the racism itself.

Yes, about half or more of the "1% get a better job" were fake, including the main one the got the huge thread. It's possible that someone wrote that, but I doubt everything that comes from Facebook or Twitter.

You're really taking my comments and running with them, aren't you?
