Red Orchestra 2 Beta is Now Available on Steam

It just delays the standard kill message for a couple of seconds instead of right away (Mr X killed Mr Y).

I think it adds quite a bit of tension to the game which is great.

Lots of good info on the official boards as well.

Yea, there's no game that can match the feeling you get in RO2 when you fire a few shots at a guy and then you see drop to the ground out of view and then the tension kicks in where you have to figure out if you actually killed him or not so you end up staying aimed at that spot for 10 seconds wondering if it's clear to look elsewhere yet but you're afraid that you'll die by the guy as soon as you look away since he knows you're there. This game creates some weird emotions in players that you rarely see in games.

"Oh shit! Did I kill him?!?! I don't see him anymore, but I also don't see a body...Shit. I'll just watch that area to make sure he doesn't pop up and shoot me."

*-Demo- kills Bolshevik*

"Oh thank God. Now I can move on and s.." *Commie kills -Demo-*

Yeah, the delayed kill display is great, adds to the doubt and confusion on the Battlefield and forces people to be aware of that target area even after you killed someone, so it doesn't become a Call of Duty rush-kill-fest.

^^ This is the reality of RO LOL

This game runs surprisingly well on my 15inch Macbook Pro... I thought I was only going to be able to play this while at home on my desktop, but I guess RO2 will be coming to college with me after all.

This is also a horrible, horrible thing.

Ehhh I'm not really enjoying it. It feels a bit sloppy and to be honest, it's really not that exciting. The Fallen map is pretty horrible. Funny thing is I really enjoyed the first one, but I'm just coming off a year or so of BC2. I'm thinking of canceling my preorder, but maybe I just need to give it some time.

I didn't want to bother Steam Support with canceling my pre-order of the regular edition so I could get the Deluxe and play the Beta, so when I saw that I could now upgrade, I did immediately. Cannot wait to play. I hope there are lots of servers playing without the kill log. Super immersion.

Saw you in a game last night!

My god this is one of the best games I have ever played. I used to think the fallen fighters map is shit on territory but we just had 15 guys on mumble all coordinating and we fought for every inch of that map with squad leaders marking artillery points and everyone calling enemy locations on the map and helping each other advance. I played commander and got like 45 kills with artillery strikes. This game is really special when you have a good team to play with.

Dude this just gave me an e-boner.

I can't wait to blow my whole weekend on this.

It was amazing man. I have put over 1000 hours in battlefield games and there never was that level of teamwork and satisfaction.

I can't wait to see the rest of the maps.

People who's got anything against Fallen Fighters haven't played in Territory. Holy shit that is the most intense gaming experience I've ever had. As a Russian, inching forwarding towards the second half of the middle that is just locked down by Germans, slowly moving forward behind all that rubble and debris as tanks fire over your head, machine guns roaring in the distant and planes circling overhead, the constant artillery pounding around you and the quiet, epic orchestral track that just sets the atmosphere completely. Never have I felt Teamwork was so essential in any game - Here's it is teamwork by force as kills and going lone wolf gives you next to nothing.

Some of my friends don't like the game but they're playing it like Counter-Strike or Call of Duty, just rush up and hopefully get some kills, fuck the rest of the team. I sincerely hope they just bugger off when the Battlefield 3 Beta starts, this game will be epic when it's the core crowd playing and people who know what it's all about.

Oh and whoever said anything about poor graphics, fuck that shit. This game looks stunning as hell.

No, te_fallenfighters is the worst. I refuse to play it anymore. The other mode on that map is fine, though.

People just cluster around the edges on territory, it's awfully annoying.

I much prefer FallenFighters on TE than CD. Blowing up people with an anti-tank rifle is fun, fun, fun.

I used to say exactly the same until I played with a good team that communicates. It is an amazing map.

Anyone knows if there'll be a mode in retail where you have one life per round. Not like Countdown but round based ala Counter-Strike? Could be so intense in this game.

Constant CTD's now, all I did that I can remember is update to Catalyst 11.8, rolled back driver and still crashing, anyone with a similar issue?

6950 2gb

Finally got some really good games in last night.

Yeah, I won't be needing BF3 or MW3. This'll do me just fine.

The more time I put in to this game the more convinced I am that this game has the best gunplay out of any game I've played so far. Pretty much every gun I've used feels perfect and I love sniping in this. I wish BF3 had range compensation on weapons, especially on sniper rifles.

CTD? (EDIT: oh crash to desktop!) I'm running Cat 11.8 and having no problems (other than performance issues) - 6970 CFX. Although I have not played for about 12 hours.

Give me a PM with your steam name if you're looking to add someone to your list to play with. I definitely want to play with people who use teamwork.

Don't have a mic right now but will have one in a few days.

And concerning the graphics: the game is gorgeous when it's maxed out. There are so many times when I'm spectating that I think what I'm saying could be in some arthouse european movie on WWII.

I've played the beta for about 2 hours and it's honestly the best shooter I've played since the first Modern Warfare, even with so little playtime. Every kill is the most tense moment I've ever experienced, and it has probably the best sniping of any game I have ever played. God, seeing those bastards drop after you fire is incredibly satisfying. All of the guns feel great, I hope they fix the little hitches and what-not, but beta is beta. Definitely going to be a lot of fun on release.

The game is buggy as hell. It's also completely awesome. I love it. I love the pace of it, the feel of the guns, the deaths (aaaaaahhhhhh... gurgle lol), the epic maps. It's 75% utterly awesome.

All they need to do is crush the bugs and kill that shithouse countdown mode (you can call me a cunt for wanting to remove something I could easily ignore, but in Aus we have a limited community, and I don't want to see that community wasted on half-arsed game modes like that).

Hmm videos look interesting, will probably pick it up, but I thought this was supposed to be a super realistic fps... I dunno the beta videos I'm watching make it look like your average shooter with some realistic elements tossed in, but still very gamey and see lot of running and shooting still

I'm loving all the maps. I only played the tank map properly once, but it was glorious coordinating with a buddy in one tank.

I quite like Fallen. We're constantly moving together as teams trying to get the objectives (maybe you guys are playing on the wrong servers where players just try to get kills?). While it's true that there is some periphery play, those are flanking maneuvers. There's enough debris/cover for an assault class to move into closer range to the enemy without getting sniped left and right. I suppose you can get killed easily if you just dash straight head-on into the objective in the middle, but that's not a sound thing to do anyway.

Appartment is great too. Lots of buildings to assault, and lots of positions you can hold/defend at longer range. Sneaking into the flank of a heavily defended enemy building is so satisfying.

You hold the reload button instead of pressing it and then your avatar will take a look at the magazine and you will get a rough estimation prompt (almost full, almost empty, that kind of thing). Remembering how many shots you fired with your LMG/SMG would be quite difficult I believe :).
Ha. That's awesome.

I read somewhere someone calling the gameplay a mix of old-school Rainbow Six and ARMA. I think that's a pretty good call. The realistic elements aren't just tacked-on, its inherently a slower paced, and brutally hard game.

Besides the day 1 server browser bug I haven't really encountered anything else in the beta. Runs awesome on a i5 2500K and a 560 Ti with everything on ultra except shadows on high. The only time I get a slight fps drop is when using a scoped rifle but it's basically locked at 66fps (there's a limit in the config file but I didn't feel the need to raise it). Can't wait for the release and being able to start unlocking stuff.

So, the fact when I attempt to go online, see thousands of players, but no servers, is a bug? Any way to get around it? Sorry if it's already been answered in the thread.

You also, follow the same instructions and it should fix that problem.

The beta seems robust to me... no crashes with ati and 11.8

The game looks pretty amazing, great feeling with the weapons, nice movement system (jump over cover, first person active cover etc.)

Looking good tripware.

Man... Are people with similar systems getting basically a consistent 60FPS? I had to turn off SSAO and turn down shadows just to get it playable. I still get constant dips into the 40s and that Fallen map drops me into the 30s. 580gtx/i5-760.

Which drivers are you using?

Seems like most people with a similar setup to mine gets worse performance, perhaps the i7 2600k is actually proving its worth with this game?

280.19. There is one a newer set.. guess I'll check it out.

Maybe your right about the extra cpu power. Might upgrade to a 2500k.

I'm on the 280.26s and the gaming is running perfectly for me, could also be a reason for some of the performance problems reported, I know a lot of people avoid the 280.xx drivers for various reasons -- I haven't had any issues with them.

I preordered the game two weeks ago. I would love to play the game right now...

I think i will install RO1 for the remaining days.

It really all depends on the server with TE-FF. I think 64 players is actually overkill on that map because you'll never be able to leave the spawn building without being pick off. With 32 players, there's gaps where you can try to make a run for it to cover in the middle. But it also depends on the teams on that map since a lot of games so far consisted of NO ONE moving to the middle to capture the points. Both sides want to sit in their respective building and pick people off and that's it.

It's a great map if you have great people, but I think it could really use some alternate routes on the left and right so you aren't in a bottleneck of sorts with multiple riflemen waiting for you to enter the dead zone.

I agree about the graphics. I actually think it looks quite good in motion and it's better than most UE3 games. It's not BF3 or Crysis and no one should expect that, but it fits in with this generation better than most people are saying.
