Red Steel is fun... WTF?

Pick up Metal Arms: Glitch in the System for the Cube and play it on the wii.

You'll thank me later. Excellent shooter on all levels, esp. multiplayer!

Had already bought and paid for this one through Amazon before the reviews came in. I was secretly hoping this one would be roughly decent despite the bad press......

My hopes were dashed. This game is awful. If there was anybody who was debating purchasing this one, don't do it. It's terrible. I haven't played Call of Duty 3 yet but it can't be this bad.

PM me if you want to trade it for something.

I was looking forward to this, but the scores were way too low, and even the user scores werent good enough. Ill just pick up Zelda and Warioware: Smooth Moves when it comes out.

Does the having to aim to the side of the screen to turn as bad as people said when it was first shown?

No, it feels more natural when you are controlling it, but it still isn't optimal and it's probably closer to a step back than a step forward mechanically.

I like Red Steel a lot, but there is just so much that makes you go, "Hmm..." in it. It has a ton of potential.

I got my Wii today and the game I played the most so far was... Red Steel.

It's weird. The game is flawed. And yet I like it. I think the settings and environments are great and linear. Graphically, it does look nice in some parts and clearly was restricted by the game's rush to make Wii launch. Gameplay-wise, I like how its structured. Automatic health recovery lets me focus on just item capturing and shooting, and the checkpoints don't make dying a frustrating experience at all. I thought the controls were very awkward at first, but they're now second nature to me. Sword fighting is fun, but can use some technical polish as the lag times and the limited kinds of swings really brings it down. The game does get slightly repetitive, but I find it entertaining.

The controls are NOT a novelty in this game. I can't imagine the game being as intriguing with a regular GameCube controller. I'll be glad to try out sequels that Ubi Soft can create, hopefully with better graphics, smoother control and more variation in gameplay.

The potential for Red Steel is pretty high. I'd give the game a 7/10. Worth the money for a launch game IMO, unlike Genji 2 for my PS3.

+1

this will be my first buy if I can get a Wii this friday

Yeah, I've played RS for a good 3 hours now, and while the story, and sword fighting could use some MAJOR improvement, It really shows off what the Wii can do with a FPS, the thought of playing a game of the quality of Goldeneye with the Wii controls makes me "does homer simpsons gurgle".

I apologize in advance if you all hate it after reading my impressions. :lol

I think the same kind of logic can apply to say, a Resident Evil game, which has its lovers and haters on each side. You may love the design decisions made in this game, or you may not (kind of like how I like the RE series' controls even though others hate it).

Resident Evil is certainly polarizing-- like Red Steel-- but for different reasons.

People that "like" Red Steel give it a 7.0, people that like RE give it a 9.0. Red Steel is a lot of fun, but there must have been some major drinking going on while they worked on the design doc. :)

I played it multiplayer for about an hour at a friends' house and the only thing that was fun(ny) was the extreme level of frustration that came from trying to kill someone.

POST ON MY OFFICIAL THREAD DAMMIT

also, I like Red Steel right now enough to give it a 7.6. It's a lot better than I thought it would be.

Haters be damned!

Actually, anyone have an HDTV and have subtitles on and have problems with the subtitles going below the TV so you can't read them? I've made sure that my Wii is set to Widescreen, I'm using Composite, yet most of the time the subtitles will play so low I can't read them.

you must see the innovation/potential it shows in the Wii.

First off, Im not sure if I like the game, but I rented it and have played through the first mission, and plan on continuing.

The game looks like shit on my LCD HDTV with composite, Ill get components in the mail by the end of the week... anyone have pics of this game running on component?

The control scheme is pretty good, and the turning is bad, but not nearly as shitty as everyone says it is.

The first time I've said wow since day one of owning the Wii is the first time I zoomed with the Wiimote, this is amazing and intuitive.

Basically, this game shows a lot of promise for FPSes on the Wii, and may not be bad to boot

I'm kind of wondering how a game like Gears of War would play like with the Wii controls. Less focus on moving and turning, more on positioning and aiming. The speed of turning wouldn't really be an issue, and you'd get to play 'lightgun' mode. I love Gears, but the aiming part is one which the 360 controller could be better at (though it is functional and quite fine).

I hear that like Zelda, you don't wan't to play this game on an HDTV without component cables, cause it just looks like a total mess.

Gotta wonder what is up with Nintendo not making those cables more available.

I have component cables and mine does the exact same thing.

Yes. Here's an additional problem: ubi bullshots!

That's a TV that is scaling Ubi's retarded shots to the resolution they actually released them at. Not so pretty. LCD TV's plus non native content = ugly, but geesh.

Those first shots...were they even realistic at all?

Ok... hold on one second...

I was loving this game, but now I see the turning problems.

Reviews said the turning was broken, I thought they just meant it was hard to turn, but now I see that sometimes when you turn the whole thing goes ****ing haywire... unless its just my Wii. Sometimes the turning is so sporadic that I duck in cover until I get my bearings again

Umm...Red Steel looks like a total mess WITH component cables. The game doesn't look anything like those screenshots Ubisoft released.

Who ever thought it would though? Those screens were so obviously touched up with AA, etc., it was pretty obvious once the videos started coming out it would look nothing like that in the end

Had UBI had more time, and not rushed it out, they could have.

I expect ALOT from the sequel now, so they bettertake thier time, and fix all the problems.

THE BIGGEST would be that if I take the Wiimote out of the sensor rage by accident, it would re-adjust itself to the center of the screen, and not spin wildly.

I've been playing Red Steel for a while now. It took sometime to get use to the controls but once I did the game became fun. Yeah turning can be pain especially when it flips out and starts aiming at the ceiling and spinning, but it still fun. The sword fighting gets more complex as you move on which is a good thing. My gripe is with the saves. When I get to a checkpoint if I exit the game it doesn't start back at the same check point. Other than that RS is really a fun game.

Yea, the indoor levels look sloppy (poor lighing), but some of the outdoor ones, and particularly the important areas that you're in for awhile (like the bar, the dojo, etc) look fantastic. (considering what else is available for the hardware currently)

Nice and shiney floors.

I spent a good couple hours playing the game at a friends house, and while I did certainly have a lot of fun, there's oh so much that could have been fixed (like the turning problems). That being said, ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION, RETRO STUDIOS?

I still have yet to play multiplayer though, and I'm anxious to try it out.

It's because you're aiming too far off the "screen".

Does anyone's target dot flicker back and forth occasionally? It only happens once in a while but it's damn annoying. Also, I've experienced problems with the zoom where it would revert to the normal view while I'm I'm still holding "A" necesitating me to move even more forward to get zoom in again which is equally frustrating.
