I think the PS4.1 is going to hurt Sony in the long run. It has a potentially higher price point but with a stopgap-level power upgrade. Wii needed a successful hook and had a full 5-year gen preceeding it, and had 6 years itself.

We've seen stopgaps with Nintendo handhelds, but never any of the home consoles. PS4.1 will still sell well because it's a PS4, but I doubt it gets the proper major developer support or fan interest Sony is expecting. It's just another console to optimize games for, but they'll not want to abandon the huge PS4 install base.

NX meanwhile would fit into the 4-8 year generational leap that the big three (and Sega) have always adhered to. It's funny because the missing 5th year of the Wii U is going to look like nothing compared to a PS4 replacement by virtue of only a power doubling in barely 3 years.

I don't think the PS4k in of itself is a problem, but asking people to buy a PS4k, PSVR, PS camera, and 2 move controllers, is such a cocky proposition that I have a feeling that we'll start to see a little buyer's fatigue on Sony's end.

So like I said people are coming up with magical miracles to explain port performance not saying that's what's Nx will be. How they get the power is another matter but it's gotta be a homerun to be pleasing whoever is claiming that or even wanting to go there.

I'm nodding with most as we discuss this and go how Nintendo, however they are doing will probably be more impressive than what WiiU has done.

Well people have weird expectations. They seemingly range from well below X1 to well above the PS4, people are all over in their pessimism or optimism.

I am simply now curious to see exactly what their CPU is, how its actually clocked (your little >> makes me think somewhere in ~2.07 GHz), and what its IPC is going to be because I'd honestly expect them to bypass the cats in whatever way they can. From there we'll get to the GPU, RAM, and so on.

You've given me hope. :P

In other words, NX could not come at a better time, especially as a generational upgrade over the Wii U. It may be short like Xbox to Xbox 360, but consumers aren't idiots and they saw the real generational leap there, short gen or not.

I mean I guess, yeah. I still like the NX's prospects, but it's sorta based on nothing but hope lol. I mean I'm getting the NX regardless, but I would like to see Nintendo do well.

Nintendo could screw up or blow us away. It's that's simple. My expectations are tempered on terms of specs and stuff. Only cause I'm not a big stickler for high end specs and because I will not act like I know anything about ARM/PPC/x86 and whatever lmfao.

Trying to catch up in this thread, but most of what I see seems to say the NX is noticeable more powerful than PS4 - at least in terms of CPU, but they each are weak when compared to PC. Is that right? Not sure why PC power is being mentioned when it comes to the consoles as we all know PS4/X1 were outclassed the moment they released by most mid-range PC.

Yeah that's about the size of it. And x86.

I love that in every nintendo hardware rumor since the Wii "can handle ports of current-gen games" is always listed as a feature.

I personally can't wait for the "meh, will wait for NX to hit <$200 before buying" posts from people ready to drop $400 on a slightly better PS4 than what they already have.

Yep, sounds right. Consoles won't be more powerful than PC's ever again. The best they can hope for is try to keep up with mid-range PC or within in range and that's largely it. Iteration might even be one way they do this so as to not remain static for so long.

That's the reality they have to cope with, indeed. Expecting them to build a super uber powerful machine is kinda weird.
I'd be more than happy with a PS4 level Nintendo console!
Exactly. I was honestly expecting something a little under the Xbox One for the sake of keeping costs down.

i mean

they kinda need it if they want any kind of meaningful third party support

Not entirely since game engines fully support ARM as well. Current ARM is also parity with the jaguar CPUs.

I still believe in ARM and not x86 because it makes things unnecessarily complicated for Nintendo's idea of hardware and software unification and ecosystem. There could be scaling issues from handheld to console and could make Smash 5 another pain.

Like a lot of people have said. A PS4-level Nintendo console is double what I was expecting out of them. And while Sony will leapfrog them again with the PS4K, they will still have to cater to the original PS4 user base, so the NX won't be losing out on much if anything at all.

As far as Nintendo switching to x86 for console goes, it honestly wouldn't surprise me.

I still think Nintendo should make a xbox+ power console as basic and a ps4++ power console for the hardcore fans. It even may cost 499$ and have 16ram. Why should it matter. Casual will buy the basic one, while hardcore rather go for the pro one.
Problem solved

The GPUs were sure. The CPUs on the other hand are underpowered to the point of being outclassed by even the lowest of budget PC and laptop CPUs, which has obviously been an issue.

Even with iterations, consoles will lag behind. Those who want the latest and greatest from graphics, performance, or resolution will need to go PC. Consoles are for convenience, ease of use, and exclusive software. Still, hearing that Nintendo may match or surpass PS4 CPU is a refreshing sign that they are making a capable home console.

True. My statement was very general.

Until we see any reciepts . ..

Now, for the console, I totally believe the x86 CPU/APU system.

In the other hand, has AMD demonstrated an x86 chip capable of fitting in a 3DS or PS Vita sized portable console and have it have a respectable battery life that meets and exceeds the current 3DS system? I am inclined to think it would be ARM and Power VR like an iPhone 6s or 7, but that doesn't fit the narrative of shared architecture.

Yeah. I do wonder about the future though and how all this may go. So far, to me, Sony seems like the least likely to benefit. MS has PC, Nintendo has a bunch of exclusives, and their handhelds are the de facto for Japanese games.

It's especially rough when PC is also getting a bunch of things that used to once be exclusive to consoles too. We're seeing major Japanese games starting to appear on Steam.

April 28 can't come soon enough.

As for the the LCGeek talk.. I never expected Nintendo to go beyond PS4 levels in any aspect for many reasons so if what he's saying is true then color me excited optimistic about NX.

Handheld will never go x86 imo. ARM has been a thing in their handhelds for ages and has allowed them a straight forward path with their handheld line. It's been beneficial to them in the long term. Something their home consoles have had no luxury to have.

The saving grace would be if the PS4K were not to allow performance improvements unless coded for in each game, but also including the following hooks:
1.) enough CPU performance improvements to make all PS home consoles BC possible on a moderate/high number of titles, including PS3. This would make a strong case for reaffirming Sony cares about the PlayStation as a platform. PaaP :).
2.) 4K up scaling.
3.) worth to write home about specs changes... Fixing the Southbridge to work without even bother anything else in the console during rest mode?

In the words of someone very smart:
Very smart person said:
anyway like I said - one "somewhat" sensible answer would be if they upclocked/upgraded enough to make PS3 compatibility viable. Then you have a SKU that has a clear selling ticket for hardcore (spec, BC, 4k) differentiated by a premium price, and you send those buyers a message "playstation is a platform".
PS4 remains the only target (4k just gets the "default" speed upgrades, unless developer specifically opts in), and drops price a bit to become the default mainstream choice.

That is what I am inclined to think, shared architecture between the two consoles is impossible at the moment, plus ARM and Power VR offers a straightforward upgrade path that fit their power requirements, are off the shelf parts for easy chip shrinking, and has a gigantic jump in power for graphics. I mean, a 3DS is basically pre-PS Vita (which is basically an iPad 2/iPhone 4s) and technology has leapfrogged far beyond that,

LCgeek's info is reassuring in the sense Nintendo is not lowballing as badly as people feared. If you expected a Generational leap over the PS4/XBO then yeah its probably not great but they are not repeating the Wii U all over again. Wii U CPU may be similar to PS3/360 but it has plenty of issues in its design that create a ton of problems. A NX CPU that is actually better than PS4/XBO is actually a pretty positive thing in the world of Nintendo. Now we just need to see a GPU that matches that mentality.

Having been taken for a ride regarding hardware power since what the GameCube I'm going to air on the side of caution with the nx. I just don't trust Nintendo enough to get that going with decent hardware is needed, they need to prove it to me.

Not sure what your issue is with the GameCube. Sure the Xbox was a bit better, but both were a big step above PS2.

Xbox also had major bottlenecks that prevented them from achieving some great stuff too. They may have had the shaders and a bit of extra stuff, but they couldn't use it to the fullest. That and it didn't get a long time on the market compared to the other two.

GameCube is still a beast regardless of what anyone says.

EDIT: ah well, my point still stands! It was a square beast, a cubivore.

I'm actually wondering if Nintendo may return to their roots this way. They've rebranded back to red, the days when they made more powerful systems. CPU power actually sounds good, we just need to know more. The wait is so long.

EDIT: Note, I say power more in a sense of parity, not really leapfrogging or being more powerful than the other systems. Parity is really all anyone asks at this point in time.

Man, if NX is actually on the level of PS4, I really hope they are using that extra juice for Zelda. That game could be stunning.
Game already looks good from what we saw so far - if they have it running in 1080p on NX everyone should be happy.

Wait, Shocking Alberto is banned?

For saying he was told that the pics of the leaked NX controller were real and then days later it was revealed they were completely fake, demonstrating he knows nothing. That faked NX controller leaked weeded out a lot of fake insiders.

Good. Last thing we need is fakers.

LCGeek has basically said that its an underpowered piece of shit that is only good for nintendo games and indies but not for AAA third party games right?

No. This is what he said.

I've stated before and since any specs were revealed this gen most would have shitty cpus this turned out to be true, so to be fair my own perspective is skewed.

amd 8350 stock >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> NX>>>>> X1 >> PS4>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Wii U. All 3 of big 3 manufacturers got this issue wrong, yet I know next gen 2 of them won't cause they tend to do a decent job. Nintendo isn't impressing anyone.

I've no idea who he is though. I take everything with truckloads of salt.

LCGeek is legit, don't worry there. They leaked the Wii CPU and other Nintendo hardware and have shown their receipts earlier in the thread.

Alot better than I expected. Will be interesting to see how the GPU stacks up.

It's weird that we've got believable word on NX horsepower and launch games (ports) and zeeeero idea about form factor.

Devs may not even know the form factor because dev kits are different. Form factor is IMO the least interesting aspect of a console anyway. Its a box that plays games.

Well by form factor in this case I mean whether it's a stationary console or wtf kind of configuration of portable+stationary systems it is.
