The general idea is that there's a decent chance that a lot of games will be shared between the console and handheld. But this presents logistical issues if the console sill uses discs, since there's no way to also use those with a handheld. The most elegant solution to the problem is to simply ship all games on cartridges, which allows for easy physical cross-buy, and provides several secondary benefits like faster load times and more flexible sizes.

dude, that be sick! That would be a huge selling point for sure.

If they really are going the (partially) shared library route as speculated, carts will solve a ton of logistical issues.

They'd create some of their own, however. If Nintendo can procure 16-64 GB ROM chips from Macronix and co., however, then good for them.

Even if they verify that guy, I still won't believe them simply for the name Nintendo Extra because there is no way a low level person would even know the name of the system before Nintendo reveals it.

Maybe Nintendo has told every dev a different name, so they know who leaks it if leaks happen.

Yep. Nintendo has no reason to tell them what they're going to name their system. That should be only for the console manufacturer to know and to reveal when they feel like it.

Plus Nintendo Extra? Lol idk it's not the best name.

i really want to know what the "special" function this time around will be, i can't imagine a nintendo console without one :)

possibilities:

free-form display
haptic feedback
shoulder wheels
head tracking
handheld/smart device as second screen
vitality sensor comeback lol

Plenty of blu ray games already have supplimental downloads to play the game.

Technically they dont even have to do 64GB rom carts to go that route though they should

Flash memory physical media is certainly an option in my mind but we would need to hear this from the mouths of Nintendo themselves

shoulder wheels

handheld/smart device as second screen

My money is on those two. Shoulder wheels should be simple enough to implement without adding any significant cost, so now they have the patent they'd be silly not to. And the handheld second screen stuff (even if it's just for off-TV play) makes too much sense for it not to happen. Nintendo have the tech, they can easily make it happen.

Like you said none of us care about the marketing money. We just want to know the games. I don't know what made him compelled to share that info. Just leave it at the games. But yeah I feel like he kind of messed himself over. He doesn't post videos anymore since then.

I don't even want to know the games tbh, unless the rumor is just "secret game to be revealed soon." Leave that for the events.

I'm just here for power rumors, patent speculation and release dates.

Nintendo Extra is a dumb name.

However, I do expect Nintendo or some kind of quick identifier in their naming convention now with their rebranding to just Nintendo.

Like Sony is with Playstation, Playstation Portable, Playstation VR.

Or Apple with iOS umbrella for iPod, iPhone, iPad, iTunes.

Assuming this leaker is legit..

This info isnt the groundbreaking stuff we are looking for.

If you scroll down the reddit page though, he talks about the controllers and how one of the controllers will have a screen or something like that. He starts getting into some other discussions so I don't know whether to believe it or not because I doubt we would start getting info about controllers so nonchalantly

I agree. They've rebranded themselves as "Nintendo" with the red and white logo. It will be called The Nintendo " ". I know they won't do this, but I kind of wished they kept Nintendo NX. I think everybody knows the NX name and it's a great name.

Yeah, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I really want to be surprised with the games when Nintendo is ready to show them. I'm just happy we don't know what Retro Studios is working on. I want to see if for the first time when Nintendo is ready to show it.

Hmm well he still has a hill to climb to be considered legitimate

That crazy hoax turned everything upside down

It should just be called "The Nintendo." That would be the best possible move. Bring together their brand with decades of people from the general public calling video games just "Nintendo."

Samsung is introducing its free-form display phone in 2017. I read it a few days ago. Can"t provide a link I'm on my phone.

That's about as direct of a name as you can get lol. I'd be fine with it.

Wait a minute...What if it's called The Nintendo Direct?

Edit: I'd like to add that games on cards would be better than discs and I'd certainly like to see it if it's feasible.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo is Macronix's biggest customer by a pretty wide margin. If Nintendo wants something, they'll make it.

R&D and the cost of solid-state memory are still concerns though. The Macronix earning call makes it sound like it could be a thing: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1176644

But it is an ambitious idea.

16GB shouldn't be a problem, but a 64GB one would probably be available a few years down the road. I guess this would be similar to the N64 going from 8MB to 64MB carts

We don't even have an 8 GB card, possibly due to cost, and the Japanese voice track was probably removed from Xenoblade Chronicles 3D because of that.

Plenty of blu ray games already have supplimental downloads to play the game.

Nintendo doesn't use flash memory, they use a new type of ROM chip.

It's almost certainly cheaper than flash memory.

Nah, that doesn't sound like a good name. Even the original Nintendo Entertainment System is a better name. Then they went with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

That was good branding with their systems and showed progression of systems without changing up the names like we have so much now.

Nintendo Gameboy and Nintendo Entertainment System were great, simple and understandable. They won't go back to the Gameboy brand but I'm sure they could find something.

EDIT: The Gameboy brand was also very strong for generations too and it kept the Gameboy name every new system. People knew what a Gameboy was regardless of era because it persisted in every era until the DS.

Even with the religious connotation?

I've heard people suggest that before. I don't buy it.

Cross-fit is extremely popular right now. I don't think anyone is hearing that and thinking, "Damn, I do want to get that Jesus body..." "Cross" on its own just doesn't resonate as that religious if it isn't in context.

I agree on your example of Gameboy. It was a brand that had such a momentum that anyone playing a handheld device might be playing a "Gameboy" because was just ubiquitous with that type of handheld system. It was all the "Gameboy." But I disagree on the Nintendo Entertainment System. While plenty of people called it the NES, and eventually the SNES with the next iteration, as a full name, it was always the Nintendo and Super Nintendo. "Nintendo" is the brand that has cache. If it's a system, I think the Nintendo for the console and Nintendo Mobile/Handled/etc for the handheld would make sense.

Yeah its ridiculous and worse still, folk are going to bundle the other (seemingly legit) leak from this thread in with this BS.

Which leak in here at eyou finding to be legit? I trust the LCGeek info, but am 50/50 on the stuff in the OP.

I agree with you that the handheld acting as a second screen for the console makes a lot of sense. I'm skeptical though that Nintendo would opt for smartglass functionality and allow you to use your phones to directly interact with a game. I do think Nintendo smart device app integration will happen, and Nintendo themselves have really said as much, but I don't see any actual controls or direct interaction with a console game as something that will happen. It will just prevent Nintendo from having the control over how a player plays one of their games that they've put such a premium in over the years. Smart device games and apps are one thing, but I don't believe Nintendo would readily leave the functionality of their console games to the myriad possibilities of smartglass controls and interactions.

Nintendo Xtreme.

They already did the whole 90's Nickelodeon thing with Splatoon. Time to apply that to the NX itself. Bring back the days when we were obsessed with sludge and skateboards.

The lack of >4GB 3DS games is actually probably less due to costs, and more due the eShop. Since the 3DS uses FAT32 as it's file system, there can't be a single file larger than ~4GB.

The one exception to this may be that special Fire Emblem Fates thing, since that is split up into parts when you buy it digitally.

The reddit guy has submitted more proof for the moderators to verify him. I doubt a hoaxer would go to that length.

Maybe Nintendo will over a controller with a screen but also allow the consumer to use a tablet or a phone (or the handheld) as an option?
