Genuinely interesting thread about a (seemingly) verified leak devolves into "let's quote every dipstick on reddit claiming to be an insider!"

Some folk here don't seem to know how reddit works it seems.

On the plus side, any genuine info from the first guy has now been swamped in nonsense and all that noise will possibly protect his source a bit.

Am i the only one more curious about the handheld than the console? I really hope we get some good ram and a fast cpu, i can't see another slow OS, and i really hope it gets a modern GPU as well.

Unlikely. Companies like Nintendo get Blu-Ray Disc's for a few cents a pop from OEM's, compared to having to pay a few dollars a pop for 64GB Flash Sticks.

Dark Cloud said:
I know some were saying going with the catridge over disc would make the system cheaper.

Dark cloud was refering to the system. wich likely would end up being cheaper by discarding the disc drive.

Disc based technology is now ancient and inefficient. Just look at how pc, ps4 and xbox one use it. It has been relegated to a slow method of delivering information,
Nintendo uses cartridges for their handhelds, so the only thing holding them back for using it in consoles has been storage capacity/price. In 2011 with 3DS they went from 128mb from DS to 4gb (8 theoretically) it wouldn't surprise me that much if now they are able to produce cartridges of equivalent size to BR at the same cost as 3DS carts in 2011.

So cartridges:

Cheaper console
Reduced heat and power consumption (faster clock speeds?)
Reduced size (good for shipping, store display, etc. for both console and games)
Flexibility in form factor
Possibilty for cross compatibility between handheld and console
Faster load times
A lot less noise

Discs:

Money
is
a
powerful
reason

Edit: rounded edges. Have to love the feel of a wii u game

Update 5: There is a Nintendo Direct planned before the Nintendo Investor meeting. Nintendo will announce it within the next few days.
Key points my sources highlighted to me:
NinOS
Nintendo Missions
Zelda news
NX News
Star Fox news

I think it's the idea of having their handheld and home console on cartridges to mitigate cost because it would just be one format across two systems. Also no need for an optical drive in their home console which could also reduce cost too. Japan has also been on cartridges forever now with handhelds.

Cartridges have gotten better than they were in the past.

Terrell had a long detailed post and stuff on that in another thread but I don't remember where.

I said it in another thread, and I'll say it again: that one post has become my largest contribution to GAF ever.

Link to the post: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=192728798&postcount=557

Again, full disclaimer, it's an intensely dense read, but for the TL;DR crowd, basically most of the costs in the actual physical media can be subtracted from the savings in logistics, the #1 expenditure of any business that sells or manufactures physical goods.

Since last week this thread has become one of the worst I've ever seen on GAF, seriously.
Are we discussing every single reddit post now?
Those guys seems to know everything now, specs, date of announcement, name of the system, name of the OS, and now the Direct about it.

At least with the 3D printed hoax there was some kind of discussion regarding gaming about the free form display at some point.
Here we just post reddit users wet dreams of internet fame, with the "verified" thread title who is more fooling people now than anything. Mod bot please?

Well, we have one person in this thread at least who has credentials with CPU leaks.

Some have gone overboard with the reddit stuff I do agree. Though I believe the Nintendo Extra guy was scrutinized because there was no way of knowing the name at all.

Best thing to do is to tone down on all the reddit posts and linking to every one seen. The discussion on processors was good, and Thraktor's post narrowing down a possible one for Nintendo is really amazing too.

okay so i can't say much because it could tie back to my sources, but this is what i've heard as an industry insider™:

-nx is not the final name
-zelda is coming to nx
-more information on nx this month
-nx is launching this year
-do not speak the nx's name
-we can only pray now
-there is no stopping the nx
-the nx is staring
-the nx m

Our friend posted this a couple of minute ago. I wonder what it entails.

Here's what he had to say.

As per the title, this is publicly available information so I'll just save you the digging time.

Nintendo are trademarking 3D representations of their characters.

While I'm here, can we please stop with the mass fake leaks. No, the NX is not called the Nintendo Extra.

All of this is lowkey known, give us something with more meat Ani

Havn't seen Thraktor's post indeed (timezones sucks), but if tech-GAF or Thraktor himself can give expanded advice on this:
an AMD GPU (which has to be by far the most likely GPU option).

I remember the AMD winning every video game related markets but, it can apply to just CPU for what we know, iirc?

Oh, sorry, the most recent "verified" one, untypedhero. He posted it in the NX reddit, so I assumed there was a particular reason for that. I don't know what it means, either.
So, the one in the topics first post? Ok thanks, got it.

Boy, i thought CBOAT's gibberish was hard to read and all, but keeping up with all those "leakers" and "verified insiders" is harder.

No you're not. There's about 50 million 3DS's and 1 Wii U

The first 4 are obviously.
The rest doesn't make sense, are you trying to tell us something?

Guys I'm a dev working for a large publisher.

I can confirm the following:

486SX CPU clocked at 500MHz
128MB of ED-RAM
Compatible with Floppy discs and Zip drives. Also has a proprietary format called a Small-Disk which can hold 200MB of data! It's a bit like a vinyl but like not really the same.

And finally the killer detail, it will launch with the entire GBA collection ported. That's right! ALL OF IT!

486 at 500mhz? okay.......what world are you living in?
128 megs of ram? unbalanced platform... I had 2mb with this processor.
Zip drives I'm with you on....

That's got nothing to do with making the system cheaper. A blu-ray drive is more expensive than a card reader. It's also less durable (more RMAs) and less compatible with mobile devices (obviously).

Personally, I'd be surprised if they didn't go with the physical format of their most successful platforms - the handhelds.
It makes the most sense, especially if they're serious about having the same games work on both console and handheld.

I had an idea for a benefit of going with cartridges.

Let's say Mario Kart 9 is approx 25GB. That's five times the size of 8, so a reasonable assumption. Nintendo then prints it on a 64GB cartridge, and not only would you be able to store save data directly on the cartridge, but also DLC. In turn, reducing the required amount of internal storage needed on the console, and allowing you to bring a complete game with all the DLC and save data around to a friends house.

The big problem is of course that someone might be able to use this as a way to install homebrew or something.

I don't actually believe Ninty will use cartridges for the home console, but it would be cool

The latest leak from that redditor.

As you are getting flooded with fake leaks and my inbox is getting flooded with questions:
The retail name for the NX is unknown to developers (or they are holding back). I've asked multiple sources.
I know of at least 1 third-party Wii U game that has/have been successfully ported to NX.
Amiibo are still supported (if you hadn't already guessed).
Friend codes are still a thing (unfortunately).
I don't know when the NX will be announced. Speculation is this month.
There are multiple "gimmicks" with the NX, one is optional.
There are physical dev-kits out in the wild, I don't have access to these.
I don't know the model of the GPU, however there is little doubt (from what I've been told) that it an AMD.
The NX is capable of outputting 4k. Consensus is upscaling and streaming.
DDR4 Memory (between 6GB - 8GB).
EDIT: Just to be clear - Although there are dev-kits out there, I highly doubt that you will get a direct leak from any of the studios that have them.

6GB - 8GB. That sounds about right. Not sure about the DDR4 though. I expect DDR3.

Can't happen because that means the entire cartridge memory would have to be rewritable, which just sounds like a really bad idea (I mean, I guess that's more or less how the famicom disk system worked but that was a different era).

Typical a cartridge is composed of two different memory banks. A large bank of true ROM and a comparatively tiny bank of rewritable memory. That way the main game data can't be tampered with, for better or worse (it would suck if your cart corrupted and didn't just lose your save data but also the entire game). If Nintendo were to go the same route then realistically the rewritable memory couldn't be larger than maybe 512MB, or else the cartridges would be way too expensive.

Personally though, I think the best option would be to just ditch the save memory altogether. Make the cartridges ROM only and save to external memory (to clarify external to the cartridge, not necessarily the system), as long as you don't pull a Vita, we're golden.

Friendcodes?! They don't zabe friendcodes on the Wii U...so why should they bring them back if u have a unique username with your Nintendo account? And he seems not to talk about the handheld so it smells like bullshit here.

Friendcodes back? We're at the time where we witness Nintendo consolidating the whole account mess, starting a new reward service based solely on the new account thing, all of that using a region-agnostic design, and heck even realises, that EU doesn't begin and end with the UK in terms of online-shops.

DDR4? Is there any gaming-related device out there that uses this type? Isn't it DDR4 or DDR5?

I don't think that this is true.

Just had another thought about that friendcode stuff, that messenger app, Threema, has the option to instantly add and verify a contact using a QR-code.

Maybe there is going to be a similar option using something friendcode like, but i can't believe that this would be the standard and/or the only way of adding friends.
