Redskins owner says they'll "Never change the name"

Do they even accept that it is a racial slur?

THANK YOU. The "it's a derogatory remark" are coming from the detractors of the name. The owner and fans themselves don't see redskins as a jab against Native Americans. In fact, the way I interpret him referring it as "traditional" is him simply seeing it as an American culture reference. "Redskins" to fans, is no different than "NY Yankees".

It just seems like such a stupid thing. Why keep a team name that at the very least toes the racist line? Even with how fucked the state of college sports are, almost all schools policed themselves and took care of this stuff a long time ago.

A portion of the fans would be pissed for a couple years if they changed it, and so what? They'd still go to the games. It's a very passionate fanbase and they're obsessed with football. They'd buy all the new merchandise too, eventually.

I could even understand a little better if the Redskins were some kind of great football franchise, but their heyday was like 25 years ago.

Because the team has had this name for decades. The team having the name isn't harming anyone or anything. If a group of people are so bothered by it well that is on them to handle. In life peope will call you names or say things about you or even name their business in a manner that may be offensive. Deal with it. The Native Americans have dealt with and are still dealing with terrible issues in their communities. A name of a football team isn't one of them.

In my opinion, this is embarrassing. The name is clearly racist. Not in the hand-wringing, everyone's a victim in post-politically correct society kinda way, either. Just plain wrong.

HA. That is not racist. As a Native American myself, I'm pretty sure I can say whether or not something like this is offensive. Political correctness these days really needs to STFU. I have the highest respect for someone who openly defies political correctness.

People can claim it's not a slur all they want, but no one in their right mind, if they were conversing with a Native American, would ever refer to them as "a redskin" at any point during the conversation. But sure I'll buy it if it's on a jersey.

Who are these racist assholes going around calling Native Americans Redskin? I just don't see it, you can easily find racist assholes on the Internet using any other slur but Redskin used as an insult is hard to find. 99.99% of the time they are referring to the sports team or talking about this very debate.

The issue is that any scientific study done on the matter has not indicated that Native Americans have an issue with it. Is appeasing a small number of critics worth losing money over and pissing off millions of fans? At this point the answer is clearly no. Personally I have no issue if they change the name as long as a unbiased third party conducted a study and concluded that yes indeed the majority of Native Americans do think the name is racist.

Did you really think that was a good idea?

Was it what I said or the image?

I've been waiting for ages for a chance to use one of those "Op is a faggot" img/gifs. No, I don't think the OP is actually a faggot.

If it was the pony, then I hope the door hits you in the ass on the way out.

Mate, we don't go around calling people faggots around here. You might want to remove the image, and then read the TOS.

Did you read the TOS? I'm no mod but using that word on this forum usually results in a ban. FYI.

at least you're/were honest.

Perhaps the humor was too subtle, but thanks for the heads up. Removed the image.

I think your problem is going to be that it wasn't subtle enough.

My point is if somebody were to walk on to a reservation he/she wouldn't address the people there as redskins. You don't see people using the term as much as ones that describe other races because most people don't run into Native American on a regular basis. Just look at the actual word. It's taking an entire culture and choosing to identify them based off one thing: the color of their skin.

If I'm banned for this, than that's a little over-the-top. I HAVE read the TOS, and have seen plenty of images that were much worse than this.

Plus, once someone explained the situation, I offered no argument and deleted the image.

Is it too much to ask to be reasonable?

Calling someone a faggot is so edgy and politically incorrect. Might as well throw in the n-word to really stick it to the man. God bless political correctness.

Please direct me to these pictures that were much worse than that.

Okay, now I have to laugh.

Now tell me how in the hell you thought that image would be okay?

There's something hilarious about a "politically incorrect" brony, though. Sorry.

There's more of us than you think.

Sorry that I haven't gone through every nook and cranny of this forum with a fine-toothed comb. This site is one of a small handful that is safe from the illiterate bigots that populate the rest of the internet, which I can assure you that I am not one of.

If I have offended anybody personally, I apologize, but from everyone's reactions, I doubt that it will make much of a difference.

lol. This is something. You literally just had to have people explain to you how "OP is a faggot" is offensive.

Folks, he apologized. Let the mods decide what to do next. No need to pile on the guy. Decide if you want to make an example out of him or actually have him learn from this.

Okay, fair enough. Enjoy the rest of your stay if you get to hang around. The illiterate bigots makes me smile though.

Only dreams.

Sorry you had to check out so soon, Junior. Glad you apologized but I don't think it will help the case much.

Sorry dude, white people have decided they speak for you a long time ago. The name is racist whether you as a Native American feel offended or not.

You're going to have a tough time masking your bigotry during your short stay here.

Well the whole issue came about when a group of Native Americans came forward and complained about the name. Then congress ran with it and brought a petition to Goodell, who decreed that the name is in fact not racist.

So if white people decided anything it's that the name,

“From its origin represented a positive meaning distinct from any disparagement that could be viewed in some other context."

I'm really sure why the club are getting the benefit of doubt over their innocent use of the name, when their founder was an avowed racist who refused to sign a African American player until the Government stepped in to make him (the skins being the last NFL team to field an African American). His will also set up a charity foundation with the proviso that not a penny be spent on "any purpose which supports or employs the principle of racial integration in any form."

Thank God. I've had it with this political correctness running amok. It's about time someone stood up and said "enough is enough, racial slurs are traditional and that's good enough for me!"

lmao

It's odd that in 2013 the Redskins still use that name and Atlanta's baseball team is still called the Braves. I think people are so used to the names not many question them.

I think it's ridiculous how so many people in this thread have ignored the actual origin of the name and have simply piled on with the whole racism thing. The name does NOT have a racist origin, I'm pretty sure another user posted about it earlier in the thread and because it does not fit with the hive mind it was largely ignored.

Keep the good traditions, drop the crap ones. This is a crap one. You guys will get used to a new name pretty fast.

And that has to do with the current owner how?

You sure about that? I'm reading that its origin is in dispute.

and lol @ hive mind

would the same apologetic arguments be put forward about a team called the Washington Darkies or the Fighting Chinamen?
I mean, it only describes an ethnic characteristic like redskin and nobody even uses the word any more.

And that has to do with the current owner how?

It doesn't, did I say it did? But the original racist name was chosen by someone who, even by the standards of the day, was extremely racist. The official reason for the name was to 'honour' a coach with alleged part American Indian heritage (although that supposed heritage is extremely doubtful; he was sentenced for falsely registering for the draft as an Indian), conveniently forgetting that he barely lasted two years as coach. The idea that it's an innocent use of the name is pretty flimsy when stacked against the stated positions of the guy who actually made the choice of name. They had to change the name from the Boston Braves, and an avowed racist came up with a pejorative racist term which had a broadly similar, if far more offensive, connotation to the original name.

Snyder's arguments for essentially come down to "we've gotten away with it up until now, so we're going to continue."
