Reggie Fils-Aime on Xbox One/PS4 lineups: "Meh"

He's right, Nintendo have a much better lineup this year.

I'm struggling to find things on the next gen systems I want to get at launch (and I really want there to be, I need an excuse to say I need one now!), there are no big must haves to me at all while the Wii U has many 'next wave' titles I'm really looking forward too.

Whether or not it will be the case in the coming years I have my doubts, we'll see. There will ALWAYS be the big Nintendo games I want but I'm sure next holiday the other 2 systems will be amping up by then too. Either way Reggie is gonna get the kicks in while he can. :D
lol... Nintendo needs to be relevant again outside of the handheld market before they can comment on others line-ups.

The thing Nintendo just doesn't realize is that the people who bought their consoles 20/10 years ago, grew up. And this generation just isn't that much delighted about a plumber when they got call of duty, halo and *insert shooter here* on other consoles.

There's always the diehard nintendo fans that buy every Mario goes shopping, Mario picks up the newspaper, Mario tells the kids to get of his lawn games. But those guys alone can't save a console which simply is ignored by the vast majority of 3rd parties out there. Those guys can't save a console which sells because of it's novelty controller, because let's face it... Nintendo's first party is not the power house it was 10 years ago.

They're pretty much "been there, done that". There's a reason that every Zelda after Majora's Mask, just isn't quite up to it's standard... because the novelty wore off.

But that's my opinion. I'm sure someone else's is that Nintendo is perfect and does no wrong and they go live in LALA land where unicorns are their best friends... but I'm more realistic.

Nintendo, in the home consoles business, is irrelevant. Either they launch a system with a novelty controller that actually grabs people's attention or they sell a system for 4 million people and hope that mario, zelda, pokemon and super smash brothers can save it.

Courting them is throwing money bags at them not praising what they're releasing on competitor's consoles... you seem to have a warped sense of COURTING, when clearly 3rd parties have given Wii U a cold should from the get go, seeing how it had strong holiday sales followed by nothing by 3rd parties, except one or two honorable mentions, MH3U and LC:U...

You know what? You are right. A big, fat FUCK YOU it's the way to go on their relationship with developers.

"We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong."

Go back 20 years and you'll hear the same thing.

And i hate that. I don't think they should get a free pass from everyone. It's always the same IP's, over and over again. I love sequels, but the problem with them it's just those handful of IP's that all cater to the same demographic. No diversity.

I don't get Nintendo. I never did and it sounds like i never will.

Wii U does have a solid line-up now, but it certainly didn't at launch. This is coming from someone who bought it day one.

I feel the same, though PS4 will definitely be worth picking up half way into 2014 which is a lot closer to launch than it will take/took the Wii U to be worth it.

You didn't know?

Microsoft and Sony, as well as a good chunk of third parties, cater to the same demographic. That's not a problem exclusive to Nintendo. Hell, I'm not even sure it's a problem in the first place.

Who is this guy and why should I care about what he has to say?

You post on a message board solely about videogames and the videogame industry and you don't know who the President of Nintendo of America is.

That is kind of fascinating.

omg

you'd think I'd learn to not eat dinner while browsing GAF. goddammit

Reggie's never gonna live down "meh" in these parts. never ever ever.

I wouldn't say the PS4/Xbone launch lineups are a meh, but I'm more interested in the Nintendo games coming out this fall than those other games.

I think Reggie shouldn't have said that though, because Wii U's launch lineup were abysmal.

Does anyone even like Nintendo on GAF anymore?

If we didn't, these topics wouldn't get twenty pages in an hour, etc.

Even if Nintendo is stupid, we all still care. Lots of people who hated the XBone were just bummed it was what it was after the 360 did so much right. It's practically the same situation.

But if you really want to meet NintenGAF, pop into the Smash or Pokemon threads.

Lmao the Wii Us launch line up is pathetic compared to both the PS4 and X1. Shut the fuck up Reggie and put your money where your mouth is

I agree. No traditional japanese style games, mostly a mess of western shooters, sports and racing games. Knack and the indie stuff look cool, but other than that it's a boring line up and none of the type of stuff I want to play.

No Jrpgs announced other than FFXV and KH3
No Shmups
No SideScrolling platformers
No crazy action games like Bayonetta or Zone of enders

It's vaguely similar to the ps3 launch. I'm interested in one, but i would need something to play on it. I feel the same way about the Xbone. Luckily a ton of stuff I want to play is coming out for the ps3 and wiiu this Fall/winter.

i share Reggie's sentiments about both lineups. Nothing even remotely interesting to me, and my PC can play those multiplats better than those consoles so, basically, zero appeal

like it or not wiiu is a next gen system. it remains to be seen how much difference something like watch dogs will have between ps3/360/wiiu/ps4/xbone. the most technically superior version will be on pc anyway.

"the most technically superior version will be on pc anyway."

It's sad how that statement has become the fall-back for Nintendo fans, just as a way to diminish the difference between the PS4/X1 and Wii U. I've seen it posted so many times during this year and very often from Nintendo fans and always in the same type of conversation as goomba's post. I'm not that psyched for either of the new next-gen systems' launch line-ups but how can you call their lineups "meh" when Wii U's line-up this Fall is an HD port of an old Zelda, an incredibly safe & conservative "3D" Mario, and Donkey Kong, is beyond me. If they had Mario Kart for this Fall then maybe he'd have a leg to stand on. As it is now, it's a wafer thin holiday line-up.

Nintendo's launch year has been slow and quiet, but as of right now, it has some brilliant games and certainly a case could be made that the end-nov lineup will be far superior to ps4/xb1, both of which have very safe lineups.

Whats most important though is whether Wii U still has the superior lineup next year.

Lol. Reggie, the only thing meh is your useless underpowered machine and the drought of decent games being made for it.

Outside of TW101, how is anything Nintendo even working on not safe and built off an old and successful formula?

But yes, next year Wii U will finally have a very strong lineup.

You should take it down a notch.

By God, some people really take things personally in this industry.

It's a shame we're entering the fanboy warz period again. We've depressing times ahead of us.

I gotta say, I agree with him mostly. I don't see anything on PS4 that I want and only Dead Rising 3 on XBone.

After the Wii U gets a price cut I'll be picking up NSMBU, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Mario and W101. Since I don't play that many games anymore, that lineup there will probably keep me satisfied well into 2014.

Reggie sounds like a car dealership loan salesmen.

"If you were my brother, I'd recommend you a Wii U because it's got the games. MY BROTHER."

I'm more excited about Zelda (albeit a remake) and Mario 3D World than I am about the two PS4 retail games (Killzone and Knack) I plan to pick up. Multiplatform titles don't count for me since I'll be getting them on PC, but if you count the ones that aren't on Wii U, then yeah, he's just flat out wrong.

You strike me as a fairly recent "grown-up game" convert. Nintendo games are still good even as you get older, bro.

But yes, next year Wii U will finally have a very strong lineup.

I'm not entirely talking just first party lineups, so in my mind things like MH Tri, Lego City, Pikmin, W101, and apparently near future games like X, Bayonetta and SMT x Fire Emblem are what I'm basing it on.

Though I acknowledge this is only an opinion, probably an uncommon one, and I am only referring to the launch lineups of ps4/xb1 rather than the systems as a whole.

In my books, I always think its worth waiting to buy a system a bit after launch just to get a full or better picture.

Also, safe console launch lineups are pretty standard, so its not an accusation limited to just the new machines.
