Reggie Fils-Aime on Xbox One/PS4 lineups: "Meh"

Love this from Reggie, given the complete failure of a console WiiU is, he fronts like there's hope, it's going to make PS4/One stomping WiiU even more sweeter. Can't deny it wouldn't be this much fun without him

I think its more about the fact that Wii U's lineup is meh so people are treating it as "look who's talking"

to me it seems like some people are actually outraged and offended that their precious upcoming systems were insulted. which is kinda funny. WiiU having a mediocreo to bad launch lineup, struggling sales, a barren release schedule since launch, and an improving but perhaps unexciting to some fall lineup does not make the PS4/XB1 lineups any better.

This is kind of why I'm not getting some of the responses in this thread. Isn't this his job?
Not really.

This guy's job is to make Nintendo look better. Does this comment make Nintendo look better? He should have focused on how they have a strong lineup for the fall or how he feels they offer a different and more varied kind of gaming experience compared to the competition. Anything.

"Have you seen the competition? Meh." kind of makes YOU look bad and I hope some day PR guys understand this.

I think it is fair to him to say the competition's lineup is not exciting. Ours is better.

It is his job to make nintendo look better both absolutely and also relative to the competition.

And reggie should shut his mouth and go fix the failure that is wiiu. I think the launch lineups are decent or mediocre, but unless reggie will admit how terrible they are doing he's a huge hypocrite.

Well, they just did that. Nintendo admitted that price really was an issue and slashed the price, and admitted that they have done a bad job so far on selling the system. You can't just criticize somebody for doing the exact thing you wanted them to do.

As for the lineup, I feel that they're doing some things that will get me to buy more of their games. I wasn't interested at all on Wii Party U, but I'm probably going to get it because I wanted another Wii Remote + controller, and now that Wii Party U comes with it, it makes it an easy decision.

If anything, Nintendo needs to do more bundling in order to sell some of their more niche stuff. For instance, Wonderful 101 needs all the help it can get, and if it could get their own controller bundle, it would help a lot.

You're twisting his words. Reggie is talking personally, "I'm allowed to say Meh.", whereas the way you say it makes it sound as if no sane person would be interested in it.

All Reggie says is basically "I think the Wii U has a better lineup of games this holiday than the competition." And that's entirely fair. It's honestly the Wii U's only selling point and he SHOULD say this. He didn't straight-up bash the competition, not at all. He's not speaking out of line here.

This is why I love Reggie. He really knows how to piss the fanboys off by throwing out little comments that just blow up inside peoples heads. He's only being honest, name dropping Battlefield really doesn't make anyone's launch line-up look any better.

But yes I will buy a PS4 but not at launch, there is simply nothing good there. Now down the line it will probably be my number one console like it's been since the PS2.

yep these company spokespeople should definitely praise the competition and admit their own products are failures :b

Never change GAF.

What is he supposed to say? PS4one will stomp us so hard we already lost?

You do realize that reggie makes bo decisions but only executes what japan dictates

Man I can't believe so many people are taking "Meh" as some huge mudslinging ordeal. Seriously meh. That's not even a negative word at all, it's just.. indifferent. There's absolutely no controversy at all about what he's saying here at all, no insults, nothing.
Meh is the worst thing a game could be. Spectacularly bad games at least get funny reviews.

This is strange to me.

Why is it so personal for you? Nintendo failing doesn't make the video game industry better, even if you don't like Nintendo games or Nintendo hardware.

The saddest part is that I agree with Reggie... next gen launch line ups look so damn lackluster for me. Nintendo's line up, outside of TW101, isn't anything better though.

People who are agreeing with him are over estimating nintendo's line up and underestimating ps4 and xbones. The next gen consoles have decent launch games especially when you consider their digital titles.
Nintendo have been releasing the same ips year after year since the wii. Their line up is nothing to write home about.

Let's also not forget that this is nintendo's 2nd winter with wiiu and their line up is even more 'meh'.

Because the only options are to insult. There is no possibility to be clever, or just make no comment. You must insult.

That does not negate the fact that PS4/Xbone have all the big franchises and the WiiU does not.
GTA V is not going to be there, not for now; and what's the point of having all the big franchises when poeple are not interested in playing those games?

Because the only options are to insult. There is no possibility to be clever, or just make no comment. You must insult.
Meh is an insult, seriously?

Everyone's bound to slip some dumb shit every now and then when you consider how many interviews they do and how the journos will try to squeeze these kind of responses from them for dem clicks.

And yeah if you take "meh" as an insult, the problem is probably on your end ;b

You remember when jack tretton said that DS is for kids when PsP got stomped hard by DS? Yeah its Like Nintendo is the only company that does that.
lol... Nintendo needs to be relevant again outside of the handheld market before they can comment on others line-ups.

The thing Nintendo just doesn't realize is that the people who bought their consoles 20/10 years ago, grew up. And this generation just isn't that much delighted about a plumber when they got call of duty, halo and *insert shooter here* on other consoles.

There's always the diehard nintendo fans that buy every Mario goes shopping, Mario picks up the newspaper, Mario tells the kids to get of his lawn games. But those guys alone can't save a console which simply is ignored by the vast majority of 3rd parties out there. Those guys can't save a console which sells because of it's novelty controller, because let's face it... Nintendo's first party is not the power house it was 10 years ago.

They're pretty much "been there, done that". There's a reason that every Zelda after Majora's Mask, just isn't quite up to it's standard... because the novelty wore off.

But that's my opinion. I'm sure someone else's is that Nintendo is perfect and does no wrong and they go live in LALA land where unicorns are their best friends... but I'm more realistic.

Nintendo, in the home consoles business, is irrelevant
. Either they launch a system with a novelty controller that actually grabs people's attention or they sell a system for 4 million people and hope that mario, zelda, pokemon and super smash brothers can save it.
1. Can you name me that games? In a world where 90% of the games Can be categorized in 3 to 4 genres i would love to play newspaper picking simulation
2. The zelda series was over 10 years old when majora launched. Novelty wore off cant be applied to a game thats over 10 years old imho.
3. 100 million units sold last gen is irrelevant now?

DKC:TF is AAA and a non-Mario platformer. You could argue DKC is just a rehash as well but it's only the second game in the series for like the last 15 years.

As niche and ignored as it may be, the Iwata Asks also confirms that Wonderful 101 is a AAA Nintendo release. Future announced releases from them like Mario Kart, Smash Bros., X, and Bayonetta 2 are also obviously AAA budget games.

Also keep in mind that every 3D Mario game is someone's first. Just because it is a "rehash" for you doesn't mean it is a rehash for everyone, especially when it is adding a series (genre?) first feature like 4 player simultaneous play.
This. And especially the bolded.

NSMBWii outsold its DS counterpart. It outsold both Galaxy games combined.

The Metroid Prime series was great. Nintendo probably isn't content with an average of 1 million sales per installment though. Donkey Kong Country Returns sold really well; both here and Japan. That's a significant improvement for Retro. Nintendo isn't going to ignore that.

Galaxy and Skyward Sword were some of Nintendo's most expensive games ever. They took up all of EAD's resources and can't have the variety of output they had during N64.

That's what needs to happen if people want Nintendo to remain "competitive" with "modern standards". They will charge full price and expect millions of sales. Ideally, games would pay for their own development. Despite that, Nintendo funds a lot of projects that are often not accepted by "Normal gamer standards". For example, the Project Rainfall games. Rhythem Heaven. Pikmin. Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents. And now Wonderful 101.

Just because the game someone wants to do well isn't as successful as other Nintendo projects (2D Mario/Kart/Pokemon/Animal Crossing/the Wii line), does not mean Nintendo isn't successful or not innovative.

Just because Pikmin isn't a blockbuster doesn't mean it's any less of an AAA game. They spent a crapton of money on it and would like to see returns. It would be the same for Starfox, F-Zero, etc.

None of the games Anticitizen One listed are Call of Duty. Nintendo has a few that can match that series in sales and they would be stupid not to use them.

The only big franchise during launch/holidays the Wii U isn't seeing that will be on the PS4/Xbox One is Battlefield 4.

Stuff like Metal Gear Solid V, Destiny, Titanfall aren't coming out until next year, and if I had to guess late next year.

So for now, the Wii U's line up this fall/winter is not too bad. It is going to compare badly by mid 2014 unless Nintendo can convince more multi-platform games to come to their console. And the only way to do that is to sell more consoles.

And FIFA; basically anything EA.

reggie needs to admit that the wii u is doing terribly and that there have been minimal releases since launch??? cmon know.

Those are just blatant facts.

He has to bad mouth his own products to justify him bad mouthing the competition???

cmon now. Let's be realistic here.. :/

I would hope that after 25+ years of re-using the same formula and mechanics that Nintendo's platformers would be good, that doesn't make me want to play them rehashed to infinity. I'd take a mechanically less competent title, yet innovative, different, and with superb production values like LBP over any of the derivative and stale 2D platforms Nintendo has been quick to churn out. I've probably had more fun with co-op LBP than I have with any Nintendo 2D platformer since the SNES days.

I also wouldn't classify Skyward Sword or Pikmin as "AAA". The former is a shell of a series that was once looked upon in reverence by core gamers alike, only to be watered down with the most absurd amount of ridiculous hand holding and terrible production values in comparison to true "AAA" content we get today. Zelda used to set the bar, and now it looks just sad in comparison to what other studios are doing. Pikmin is a quirky niche title that seems like a fairly safe sequel to a series that was never all that big to begin with.

And as for Other M? If that's "big budget", it just shows you how far Nintendo has dropped off in terms of quality control (I realize it was a joint project). This title should have never been green lit and is an embarrassment for the series.

So what you're left is Mario Galaxy 2. Yeah, it released 3 years ago. One truly AAA title in three years, and I'm supposed to be satisfied with that output?

It's why I haven't picked up a Wii U and probably won't for years. Nintendo simply does not stack up anymore.

I guess there ARE people that like all of the safe and cheap titles Nintendo churns out that hardly deviate from a given formula or presentation, but there are also a lot of previous Nintendo die-hards that haven't felt the same level of quality and magic that used to set standards for the industry. If Nintendo had more Mario Galaxy 2 type productions, at least the Wii U would probably be doing GameCube numbers or better. Now you're left with a company that hardly has a core fanbase anymore and the casuals have all moved on.

So in other words a bunch of their AAA games "aren't AAA to you" for undefined reasons so they don't count. Meanwhile you glossed over a bunch of other examples I provided so that you could act like SMG2 is the only one worthwhile. Skyward Sword isn't AAA because it has hand-holding? What the fuck? Is Assassin's Creed not AAA anymore? What's wrong with its production values? The fact that it's on Wii? I'd imagine it's probably that since you completely ignored any handheld games.

Since "AAA" is just a marketing term, it'd be useful to get at what makes a game AAA for you or not.
So what makes a game AAA to you? Does it have to have voice acting? Realistic graphics? DLC? Blood and guts? Cursing? A "meaningful" (read: sad and/or tragic) story? Being on a Sony/MS console?

What does nicheness have to do with it?
Are sales what determines AAA? If so, Nintendo has plenty of AAA games, Animal Crossing being the latest AAA release. Or does that not count because .... well, you fill in the blank.

I think the fact is you don't play these games and you wouldn't be interested in them anyway. That's fine. But if you're saying that the marketing simply isn't doing it for you for these games that's an argument from ignorance as to the high quality of these games.

Is it getting nba2k, FIFA and madden?

Why does he ALWAYS say "We have Zelda, we have Mario, we have Donkey Kong"?! I've heard him say it like 10 times since Wii launch now and it's pissing me off. I love Reggie, but come on!

Is it getting nba2k, FIFA and madden?

Madden was already released and not a part of 'Fall 2013'. I honestly forgot about FIFA because as a person who lives in North American, I do not understand why anybody would care about soccer. =P

And lol at NBA2K.

It's not getting the EA franchises but it is getting Skylanders, COD, Watch Dogs, Ass Creed, Batman, Splinter Cell, Rayman, Scribblenauts, Lego, Sonic, as well as its own big franchises like Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, and Wii Party/Fit. To say it is not getting all of the big franchises is pretty disingenuous when it is getting quite a few.

Brave words for a guy whose company made Wii U ;)

I agree with him. The PS4/Xbox One will have great games, but those games are not at launch.
You might not be interested in them, but how are games like Forza, Drive Club & Killzone Shadowfall not in the (possibly) "great" category? I mean, all of those are from critically more or less acclaimed franchises/developers, Forza pretty much being (one of) the most acclaimed sim racers of today.

Plus unlike Wii U, PS4 & Xbone are actually going to get the best (console) versions of 3rd party games this fall, not gimped shit like Mass Effect 3, so there might be reason for some people to upgrade.

PS4 launch lineup > entire Wii U catalogue

IMO

This. I bought 3 WiiU games at launch and have gotten hardly any use from them. I've sold 2 back already (at poor resale prices I might add). PS4 has so much more to offer, day 1. I'm not even talking exclusives, just normal 3rd party games like Madden, Minecraft, the Witness, etc. WiiU doesn't even have "the basics" of a game library.

Madden was already released and not a part of 'Fall 2013'. I honestly forgot about FIFA because as a person who lives in North American, I do not understand why anybody would care about soccer. =P

Those are three big franchises. You laughing them off is basically laughing off an entire market of gamers that literally will buy a console for the latest versions of these games and by their mere existence builds online communities in ways and with volume that very few games have managed to do on consoles.

Nintendo missing out on the key sports franchises is very much a big deal.

So basically truth be told the wiiU will be missing out on 4 of the top franchises(throwing in battlefield which looks to be a big seller) releasing on consoles this holiday season.

Downplay it all you like but not having sports titles is nothing to scoff at.

EDIT: forgot about need for speed as well. Make it 5.
