if you could use the game interface wouldn't creating the app be a huge waste of money?
I mean, yeah, I guess, but we are talking about Nintendo here.

This actually isn't that bad of an idea. Keeps with the theme of portability for the Switch.
So...why are we paying Nintendo for online play when match-fucking-making requires a separate device and app again?
The 3DS does not have this in its OS either.
It blows my mind that someone is actively trying to defend this idea without being paid a cent by Nintendo.

I'm not defending it, but way more people have a smart device (not just phone) than a Bluetooth headset when they're on the go. I think a Bluetooth headset should be an option because I thought the Switch had Bluetooth. So do wireless bluetooth headsets
Not making excuses because I think it's fucking stupid but I wonder if this is Nintendo's way of keeping the eventual "pervert lures children with Nintendo switch!" Clicibait story from coming.
It's interesting you bring up smart watches. The reason people like those things is because they're more convenient than phones for some things, such as quickly checking who's calling you without needing to take your phone out of your pocket to obtain that information.People are tripping out over this, but it doesn't seem like that big a deal to me...and i'm not even gonna buy a switch.
We are already accustomed to tethering devices to our mobile phones. Over of the main reasons for doing that is because it minimizes the processing that needs to handled on the peripheral device. Think smart watches.
In the case of the switch, it's primarily used for playing games. But anyone who plans on using it for mobile online multiplayer is probably already carrying a device that's superior for text input and has decent audio capabilities (A cell phone) . Why not tap into that and minimize the drain on the Switch's battery?
Having console matchmaking actually be handled on a console is something we've all been pretty used to for over 15 years now.Why is this a bad idea?
I don't play games online. Can someone enlighten me?

So you can't use a headset at all while while the Switch is docked, even for private gaming in the home? I know a lot of people who do that so they don't disturb their children, people sleeping, etc.
This is insane
.I don't think I've ever had my interest in a device plummet this hard, this quickly.

I would say especially in Japan. People only do local mp outside. Also, the portable wifi or a phone data plan is crazy expensive there.
That's why I said nearly all of it, obviously you can play online but you lose every other benefit of the online system you'll pay for. Want to match make with buds? Nope. Want to send a message to link up? Nope. Want to voice chat? Nope. That is unacceptible and honestly a likely outcome with how often phone OS' update and app functionality gets borked until one party or the other fixes the issue.
How do we not know this if people are confirming there are no headset jacks in any of the controllers? If the jack is in the Switch, and the Switch is docked, how would this be possible? We don't actually know this for sure yet.
But given what we know currently it wouldn't be surprising.

The app will probably work fine on some $20 prepaid phone. The crazy thing to me is in the case of contract customers or people who trade their phones in... do you really want to risk dropping your phone or cracking the screen for something as needless as this? I don't even attempt to handle my phone in the dark or while I am already holding a controller (let alone an actual game system). I just yell at Alexa if I need to know something about the weather, traffic, or when a football game is.Well I don't have a smartphone, but I'm also not going to pay for Nintendo's online, so I guess those two failures cancel each other out.

More like a good portion of thier RND went into the Joycons and online was a after thought.
I see. Bluetooth would be less than ideal for me if I were to gain with a headset, but I really do unless I'm in a party.Wireless headsets might be possible. We know the system supports Bluetooth.
We don't know that the OS supports audio on headsets yet.
Someone on the other voice chat thread suggested that the people without smartphones could put their laptop next to them to run an android emulator to run the app to chat with your friends. Sounds like a reasonable solution for you. Keeps with the portability of the system.Well I don't have a smartphone, but I'm also not going to pay for Nintendo's online, so I guess those two failures cancel each other out.
They have no headphone jack on the pro controller or the joycon grip

Are we reading the same thread? What's even more bizarre is Microsoft or Sony would be getting the shit ripped out of them if they did anything like this. Nintendo however doesn't. People have just learnt to accept that they sort of just do what they want to do. it's crazy.
Maybe this will turn out to be less of a hassle than it sounds but man, what's even the point of an external chat app in a would with Skype and Discord? If people need to use a phone to chat to their in-game friends there are easier more established apps they could use than anything Nintendo will be able to put forward.

Don't forget eating through your monthly data plan much quicker using the app. More money for Nintendo's online service.

I will never understand the mentality of people who make decisions based on nostalgia. Nintendo was great, Nintendo was innovative, Nintendo deserved market space. They lost this privileged long time ago.
I am not expecting people to like what I like, or that my opinion supercedes yours but there is not a single reason, logically thinking, to own a switch or support Nintendo and their device. It's the equivalent of buying every iteration of Apple product or buying clothing and other products based on brand name alone.
Is Nintendo a the switch a complete write of ? No, they have yet to prove it but it 100% is right now.
