REmake HD PS4 vs. GameCube footage

I'm actually pleasantly surprised, they seem to have put a decent effort into making the backgrounds look good in high resolution. Not the biggest fan of the new lighting, but it's not going to ruin the experience. And I'd like to see what it looks like in some of the more interesting areas.

More importantly, does the game play still hold up?

It's excellent, but if you never liked old Resident Evil, this game likely isn't going to change your mind.

They cropped the frames to achieve 16:9 :(

There's a 4:3 mode.

Worse color than the horrible green pall over the entire game on GC? The blacks look a bit too dark, hope that's a capture or brightness settings issue since PS4 itself shouldn't crush blacks.

Yeah, that green tint was most def. an artistic decision. Like the green in the Matrix movies. It helped glue things together and create some goulish atmosphere (imo of course).

Every video / screen i have seen from this remake has crushed blacks, sadly.

Looks even better than the footage before. Must've been PS3 before.

Contrast and backgrounds both look great!

Lighting is a bit more pleasing on the GC, but that's it.

More importantly, does the game play still hold up?

Well, yes and no. Basically it comes down to if you like or dislike tank controls. This version of the game will have a non-tank control option, but it's also not going to control like a modern TPS or anything and still have fixed camera angles. However, design wise, atmosphere wise, and I'd argue gameplay wise it is fantastic and one of the best of its genre, so basically if you like survival-horror games, you will very likely enjoy this game. If you don't like survival-horror games, then you probably won't. If you have never tried a survival-horror game, this is not a bad place to start at all.

The game has both a 16:9 mode and a 4:3 mode, you can play in the original resolution. The 16:9 mode is dynamic as well.

More importantly, does the game play still hold up?

Yes. I just finished a playthrough last night on Dolphin. And if you can get into the swing of things early on, the game is as amazing as ever. I didnt even notice the tank controls after awhile, by the end it felt normal.

Got the PS3 jap version on pre order, will double dip when it hits PS4.. probably end up getting it on PC at some point too.

actually, it seems kind of silly to compare a SD game that's presumably running on composite cables with blown-up footage displayed on LCD monitors with something that has been retouched and made for the monitor you are watching it on.

Lighting bug :P

Overall, this looks really good.
Although I miss the greenish tint of the original.

Well why didn't I learn of the 4:3 mode until now? that changes things.

The feature was known since the very announcement of the game. ;)

They should have just compared them both in 4:3 mode.

And made a decent quality 1080p video at least.

Who needs to see wallpaper, anyway?

Plus there's a missing rim lighting on the top of Jill's hat and shoulders.

Looks fine in 4:3 mode, 16:9 is a obivous no go though (imo).

edit: The crushed blacks may just be there because of bad capturing (limited vs. full range RGB).

Rose tinted glasses is legit.

I don't remember the GC version looking anywhere near as washed out and dull as it does here.

It doesn't when played on a proper CRT setup.

This IGN player really is shit.

Video finishes, recommended videos appear, hit replay video and the recommendations don't go away.

I like the look of it. The PS4 has a nicer colour tone to it IMO. It also has nicer character animations that makes them feel less 'static'. Would be interesting to see PS4 vs Dolphin 1080p. Obviously the PS4 would still triumph in a majorly strong way. But I think this just shows how well this game holds up, which is 2 generations back now.

I hate grainy video so this is perfect for me. Looks much improved from the previous images/trailers

Looking pretty good IMO. I never got REmake on GC (I somehow actually never heard of it at the time) so I'll probably get this depending on price. Looks like 16:9 is zoomed in rather than stretched or just re-rendered?

Why would they do that? Some places have shown last-gen as well, it seems like PS4 would always be the optimal console to show (or PC for basically bullshot quality)

I think it's re-rendered in 16:9.

In the PS4 version screenshot Jill looks wider as if she has been stretched but I think it's just her stance that is a little different.

Is there any word on there being a hard copy release other than PS3 JP?

Good thing there is a 4:3 mode. Those cropped backgrounds and that scrolling annoys me in 16:9 ...
It does look quite good though, the way they made it look present.

I have such nostalgia for the GC Original (and the PS1 original) so I'll definitely be picking this up.

Definitely looks nice and clean.

That's what Capcom is banking on. ;)

That and people who never have played the game who may be interested because of the excellent word of mouth this game has and for some of those millions of new RE fans who may be interested to try the original.

Shame they couldn't re-render the backgrounds though.
The part where Jill goes down the staircase looks far better to me in the Gamecube version.

I don't really think the backgrouds are upscaled in the REmake; they look significantly better than their low-resolution counterparts.

This environment shows the most dramatic resolution upgrade.

I'm not sure if it's supposed to look like the wall's charred above and below the fire. Debatable if the lighter, maybe more realistic shadows on PS4 are an improvement over the striking darkness on GC.

There's shadow acne on the ground and tombstones that needs to be fixed up and the darkness of the two right side tombstones doesn't make sense.

I like the lighting on the Gamecube better, especially the shadows, but overall this is at least a decent effort at a port on Capcom's part. Time to buy it again.

Yeah, uh, Resident Evil did not look like that for me on the GC. It was considerably clearer.

In that environment, I prefer the lighting and shadows on GC.

Oh I agree but they are mostly banking on the nostalgia factor here, lets be honest. And just to be clear, I will be buying this. lol

I know it's a weird thing to say, but it looks almost too clean.

I kind of agree with this in select cases. Overall I think it looks quite nice, but Jill's character model in 1080p just looks like a model from a budget game, whereas in the context of the dirtier Gamecube image, it's looks like a model that was very high quality for its time period. I also thought the close-up zombie faces were a bit creepier in the old footage, again probably because the lack of clarity in the image lets my imagination fill in the little details.

Also, this isn't an issue of clarity, but the contrast of the lighting and shadows was sometimes more pleasing in the GC footage even though I'm sure the rendering on the PS4 is technically more sophisticated.

In any case I'm looking forward to playing this for the first time to find out whether old-school RE gameplay still holds any appeal for me.
