Remember that eminent domain case? It gets worse...

You guys remember Kelo v. New London? Well, seems like winning the Supreme Court case made the New London Development Corp. a little bolder. In a nutshell, Kelo et. al. get:

1) 2000 market rates for their homes.
2) a rent bill for rent since the city started the eminent domain proceedings.
3) a warning that trying to fight it will only make it worse.

Fuck New London.

Yep.

There's no way they'll get the rent, and they know that. What they'll try to do is get the houses and land for the 2000 assessment price instead of the current one as a "compromise".

Kelo vs. New London was decided correctly, this is just corporate asshatery and any local corruption or unresponsive government issues that New London has should be handled different than any qualms with the way the case was decided.

Regardless of the correctness of the decision, the "just compensation" NLDC proposes leaves at least two of the property owners in debt. That's simply not right.

And I agree with you-the responsible thing for them to do, given the situation, is to pay the market value, forget any of this rent stuff, and try to put this behind them the best they can. That would be a responsible line of action for a semi-public company like NLDC. They aren't doing the responsible thing, and the public should be questioning the actions and wisdom of the people that they should be holding accountable to manage the development properly.

Again, I'm just trying to make the clear distinction between the court case, and the corrupt, unethical asshattery that NLDC is showing.
