NEW YORK (CNN) -- A Republican congressman from North Carolina told CNN on Wednesday that the "evidence is clear" that Iraq was involved in the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001.

"Saddam Hussein and people like him were very much involved in 9/11," Rep. Robin Hayes said.

Told no investigation had ever found evidence to link Saddam and 9/11, Hayes responded, "I'm sorry, but you must have looked in the wrong places."

Hayes, the vice chairman of the House subcommittee on terrorism, said legislators have access to evidence others do not.

Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, said that Saddam was a dangerous man, but when asked about Hayes' statement, would not link the deposed Iraqi ruler to the terrorist attacks on New York, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania.

"I haven't seen compelling evidence of that," McCain, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told CNN.

I literally crawled under my desk and cowered for, like, five minutes after reading this. This country has officially gone batshit insane.

This guy represents the ass-end of North Carolina-the area east of Charlotte, South of Greensboro, and southwest of Raleigh-Durham. This deep in the heart of the cracker belt, he could say he molested young church boys and still get re-elected. Hardly surprising that he'd go and just make shit up (aka getting his news from WorldNetDaily, etc.).

*LOL* Funny coz it's true!

I really think someone should send an email to WND and tell them that since the PSP has wireless capabilities, it can be used by terrorists to detonate explosives. Tell them that the PSP is selling well in Libya, and that we should be afraid. PSP Sales and hype +1000 right there.

Well consider that this comment hasn't been making headlines, hasn't been dimissed by his peers as absolute hogwash, and hasn't been challanged and pointed out by the opposition.

Most likely because the intelligent people already know it's BS and could care less.

Seriously, how does this affect you or any intelligent person? It's just another nut.

I think that it's just the fact that people still say it is what is so disturbing here. No, his statements aren't going to significantly shape public opinion, but they just won't quit. Ever.

If this person has any say or input on how the "war on terror" is handled, it affects billions of people.

Please note that this man is AN ELECTED MEMBER OF YOUR GOVERNMENT.

Also note that plenty of your fellow countrymen will take this as proof that Saddam had something to do with 9/11 other than being present on the same planet at the time.

Chances of me putting any faith in "we know stuff... trust us..." swill from the US = Zero. For reference, I was willing to put some faith in WMD "intelligence" during the early days of the war. I cannot believe (or wish I couldn't) that we are hearing the same again.

I am so shocked by the reactions in this thread.

I'll just continue to laugh off comments that are even more ridiculous from the likes of Kennedy, Byrd, Boxer, Reed, etc. Those tend to fall to the wayside in this place... Another shocker.

Oh, like what? That our "welcome" in Iraq isn't quite what the administration had imagined? That we lack an exit strategy? That we barely had an entrance strategy? That, perhaps, the Secretary of Defense should resign given these failures? Yes, they're right up there with Hayes just making shit up.

The way I see it, the majority of important republicans are completely fucking bonkers. The majority of important democrats are spineless wussies.(almost said spinless...amazing how a single letter can completely change a sentences meaning)

Take your pick...personally I side with the wussies, but that doesn't make me happy they are wussies.

Democrats just eximplify typical government stupidity. Republicans on the other hand have simply gone out of their way, as of late, to biggest fuckjobs on the planet

no shit, thats why i dont understand the rapib hate republicans get from democrats

Read the thread...they didn't hate on ALL republicans, only the ones who make these stupid comments.

Democrats haven't done much...but hey, that means they haven't done much harm either.

The Republicans are in a position where they are responsible for a war that has killed tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis, and thousands of American troops. They are responsible for a war that wasn't required as Saddam wasn't a threat to the American public. Don't bring up the "a threat to his own people" crap as the Bush Administration wholly endorses the Saudi and Egyptian government, both of which do the exact same things as Saddam.

The fact that the Republicans are responsible for all this, as well as the torture scandals in Gitmo and Abu Ghraib (which was BASED on Gitmo's policies, which were endorsed by Rumsfeld), gives a person complete justification for hating on them. The Democrats could be considered INDIRECTLY responsible for not stopping this or calling it out. Though I think that's a bit of a stretch.

The focus on what is wrong with America's war on terror shouldn't have to be directed toward the Democrats. That doesn't make sense.

Like 99% of Democrats went along with Bush's bullshit just as willingly as most of the American populace. They carry almost as much of the blame imho. Most of the things you complain about (and I agree with you that they are totally wrong) were passed with a majority of Democratic support. Granted most of these insane things were dreamed up by Bush's batshit Administration, but Democrats are just as complicit because they didn't have the fucking balls to say a word when it mattered.

Those people above tend to make credible-if sometimes harsh-critiques of the Republican rule in Washington.

This guy is doing something *distinctly* different. He's LYING and spreading disinformation.

I am so sick and tired of the right-wingers intentionally using government's innate partisanship to twist the argument from "fact vs. fiction" to "left vs. right".

I totally agree that they must take total responsibility for allowing it to happen. But not for pushing for it to happen. Sorry for not making myself clearer in my original post.

The Democrats are still quite useless. The war has already taken place, but the scandal with the torture and disrespect of the Koran are still issues that affect the way the World views the US. The World needs to see at least SOME Americans standing up against this.

Despite their activists' protests to the contrary, Democrats aren't spineless; they are powerless. All the Democrats have is their self-righteous indignation, and the hope that that, coupled with media attention, can nudge the national agenda their way. Surprisingly that seems to be working, despite the fact that they're unable to win an election.

"Saturated fat causes heart disease as much as Brawndo is what plants crave."
haha, what a dumbass.

Republicans are too corrupt to have all the power they have now. Democrats likely wouldn't be much better.

The great part about being an independent is that you can laugh at the morons on both sides.

What really disgusts me are the people that vote for one party no matter what. They don't even inform themselves. My parents are that way. They always vote Republican. They have no idea about all the crap that's going on now.

My mom watches Fox News and calls it "Republican News" and the other channels Democratic news. I tried to explain to her that pretty much the only liberal show left is the Daily Show, but she was determined to watch Fox.

I really don't understand why anyone would want their news to be twisted to support their beliefs. News should be objective.

My dad watches CNN, but hardly ever.

Americans are starting to wake up to the facts of the Iraq/9-11 connection(read: none), and I say if eager Republicans want to continue make statements such as that, then give them the largest, most visible platform to speak on.

Let these fools hang themselves.

teh_pwn

Keep in mind (I'd say) a good 30-35% of voters are hardcore Republicans and don't give a damn what the party has done.

Its been what 3 years and I would bet at least 45% of Americans still believe that Iraq had WMDs, had a connection with 9-11, and that Kerry is really Osama Bin Laden.

Its time to stop caring what most Americans think because they are obviously monkeys.

Still, it's false. Demonstrably and unequivocally so. Today I watched in amazement as Chris Matthews took time off from his usual daily Democrat bashing and told Howard Dean, "Why does the president still try to blur the lines? The war was basically started on lies, on bad facts, yet he still conflates Iraq and 9/11."

Although his memory could use a restart because he couldn't recall an instance where a Democratic leader(Kerry, Clinton, Edwards, etc) haven't stated that the war is a mistake. I kept yelling at the TV, "Hey, idiot, did you watch the debates where Kerry said invading Iraq was a 'colossal error in judgement'??"

Please God, if a Republican has to be president in '08 let it be John McCain.

Why? He's just as conservative as the current crop of kool kids running the show. Don't be fooled by the media's constant fawning over his 'level-headiness' and 'moderate, centrist' viewpoints.

The media loves him because he's willing to make the rounds on every talk show imaginable and offer an opinion that differs from the White House's message. Unfortunately, his voting record shows the real John McCain and the fact that he campaigned for Bush in 2004 after what Bush and his team did to him in South Carolina circa 2000 is a fucking disgrace. He also had no qualms with letting Mr. Torture himself, Alberto Gonzales, attain the status of Attorney General.

He's a phony who's always had his eye on the presidency.

Yeah, forget McCain. He can string a pair of sentences together, but he's not somebody I want for president. Sure, compared to Bush I would, but then I'd also prefer a red candle take the presidency than have to endure one more day under Bush. Like Incognito said, his record shows otherwise, regardless of his camera hugging and pandering attempts to be the moderate voice.

Also, why the hell is Scott McClellan's mom running for Texas governor?
