Republicans move to criminalize disruptive protests in multiple states

Yes, and my family would agree with these choice I make considering our family's history. My grandfather fought against the Portuguese government's colonialism and mistreatment of the natives in Mozambique, he sacrificed his entire family fortune to help those natives, and took his wife and children down with him, and they were on his side regardless.

During the 70s, my mother was banned from entering the United States because she aided women and children who suffered from abuse of an authoritarian government by flying them from Portugal to the U.S. illegally. My family supported that desision and was proud of her to do it. You know, she lost access to her first born son. She given up my brother to her ex husband, who was recently granted citizenship in the U.S. at the time, to make sure he has a better life here than in Portugal when she got caught.

I have fought for the rights of the LGBTQ, I've attended marches, protests, and volunteer in various organization to further the cause of equality, including the Trevor Project. I know that maybe one day, I might get hurt or die for my cause, especially when dealing with hate and bigorty, and I don't care because my cause is worth it. My family, although we don't see eye to eye on LGBTQ rights (That's now changing, thank god), would agree to it. My mother definitely does.

You're talking to someone who's family has a history of fighting against fascist government for the people. I understand the risks involved in fighting these causes and the sacrifices that come with it.

Holy hell you come from a long line of fighters. Props to you all

- snip for brevity -

As laudable as your personal resolve may be, how do you propose to deal with people who are against you, are ambivalent, or apathetic, because (pick one or more!):

A. They have not been tested in the crucible you and yours have been
B. They have different ideas on how to handle present events
C. They do not agree with your perception of present events
D. They do not agree with your extrapolation of future events
E. They have different ideals
F. They have differing priorities

Edit: I'll be honest and say apathy is the true enemy - everything else is actually understandable. Not giving a shit, however, is just vile.

Hopefully if some of these pass, they will all get stricken down by the Supreme Court. I know Trump is getting a free seat so it'll be leaning conservative, but surely even some of conservative judges could see this as the total violation of the constitution. I mean, surely. But who knows anymore.

There will never be a Tea Party 2.0 if the Republicians never truly lose again, which is clearly what they're trying to build to.

They'll lose eventually. It's inevitable. Building some kind of a dynasty now would not fit the established historical pattern. They feel now how the Democrats felt back in 2008. It won't last. It's up to them now, though, to see if they learn the lessons of the past and actually do something productive with their time in power.

Quo vadis, USA?

I really hope all that is happening makes everyone more involved in politics and take all elections very seriously.

The same as I do now. Discussion and resistance. I have tried to talk to people multiple times on LGBTQ rights, help them understand where I'm coming from, both people who are unaware and even those who are against it completely. Those who try to silence me, I speak even louder then them, and if they get violent, which they have, I will fight back.

Apathy is the tricky one, the true enemy there, but I am able to get those who are apathetic to at least listen. The truth is that they will likely have a family member or friend one day that will come out as LGBTQ, and then they'll hear the awful things that might happen to them. It's something to really think about. Would you really stand by and watch someone you care about suffer? Discussions about it is hard, but at the very least, I can get them to listen. How do people put it? Planting the seed?

The super right wing, more or less the evil super villain class, will use the next 4, probably 8 years as the biggest most shameless powergrab you've ever seen. Facing a world that is generally progressing in many areas, especially the important stuff that affects them such as green energy massively expanding (putting their profits at risk), they will use this massive opportunity to grab everything they can.

I watched a BBC report this morning speaking to some lovely people in some small town who were christian baptists running a food bank, and all the people in this community actually thought Trump cared about them. So fucking sad. Everyone apart from rich white cunts are going to suffer over the next few years and the repercussions will shamefully echo throughout the following generations. Nothing less than a mass revolution and enlightening coming as a result of Trump's time in office could reverse what is to come.

There could very well be a Tea Party 2.0, in the sense of a grassroots movement demonstrating, putting pressure on local governments and ultimately impacting policy making. The thing is, it would be a left wing one, trying to defend healthcare and these kinds of causes. So I guess it's okay to lock out such a movement.

We tell ourselves this, bit between aggressive gerrymandering and aggressive voter suppression laws, the GOP has declared all out war. And the defense seems gutted and pointless

I agree entirely, apathy is the reason we all have to suffer Trump (and I'm not even American!). If people could just be bothered to vote, things might be different.

I like planting seeds. Hope they don't become weeds, though :D Flowers, pls. Or even a cool tree, or something. Maybe an orchid? Nurturing the seed is just as important, since new ideals are easy to be stamped down by peers / expectations / societal pressures.

And the most thorny of issues: it is really difficult for most people to give a shit about other's rights when they're poor and downtrodden, and have to see others not being poor and downtrodden. Let us not even start delving into ethnic and racial debates, lawdy me. How do we handle this?

My country has different issues, but the same populist agenda - in all honesty, I am already assuming that the Dutch nationalist parties are going to get a big upswing in our government.

It always seems the darkest for the losers. It's not permanent. You're doing your future a disservice by losing hope now. Over this, of all things.

A point about gerrymandering - its effects are not that impactful relative to the effect of urban vs rural population spread. For the house seats anyway. Voter suppression is a more meaningful thing to focus on, IMO.

Don't forget bullshit laws squarely aimed at making their opposition felons, and ineligible to vote.

This, of all things? This is pretty fucking major, I would say.

Shrug. I feel protesting on an interstate/highway is too dangerous for the people protesting and the drivers on the road. And it seems pretty clear that type of protesting is unsuccessful.
Would Dr. MLK want some poor driver to be arrested just because they accidentally hit several protestors who were protesting the wrong way? Of course not. He knew there were better ways to get your message out there.

I nowhere stated I was in favor of these laws. In fact I said I was against it. I only expressed concern over that type of protest and its safety.

Republicans have got to be the most hypocritical cunts out there. These protests are nothing compared to what they did to Obama during all of his years as a president.

I'm so glad Nana Ruth is a thing. People really lose it at freeway/highway/bridge protests lol. Even though protests are meant to be inconvenient. Thank you, Gordon Shumway and Crimson_Gold.

In case others don't know, the origin was the MLK Day Bay Bridge Protest thread. Hypothetical lives are more important than minority lives, as enzom21 put it.

UncleSporky was concerned about a hypothetical grandma whose life would be lost in an ambulance stuck on the Bay Bridge (even though ambulance cars shouldn't be on bridges...).

Is it alright to become unsympathetic if your grandma dies in the ambulance that can't get through?

Like, that specific circumstance. Minor inconvenience, nah, that's ridiculous, but I think I'd probably get resentful if a loved one died.
Of course, hypothetical lives are more important than black ones.
You can have Ruth. No one can take her from you
He's just trying to get to grandma Ruth before she's gone..have a heart.

We all grieve in different ways..

Our hypothetical grandma. She lost her life over a bridge protest. She was the madame of a quilt knitting operation.

Scary as f****. Sounds like state controlled country from 1920.
The big companies and rich persons can lobby all they want to do something. What can a ordinary person do as opposition? Sure... you can write to someone in goverment or do a signature collection. But that DOES NOT make the same impact as having a big protest.

Its like a football (soccer) match where the big companies get 11 100million players and the common people get amateurs. Its not a fair fight if you take away the peoples right to protest in a bigger way then just collecting signatures.

Ofcourse i understand you have to stop a blockade of the freeway eventually. But the police should break it up and release them after a few hours. AND THATS IT

what about freedom of speech? Which these days these same cretins seem to keep using as a shield for bigotry.
That's definitely the most un-American aspect of this whole thing. Regardless of whether you get heard out or not you have the right to say what you want to say.

As for Michigan, I don't really see why an employer would have to tell replacement employees about an ongoing strike. Kinda hard to be oblivious to such events unless you are in a coma.

I feel like America is over. I know that sounds dramatic but what else can you say?
Exactly my fears. It's hard to be optimistic when half the country just doesn't care and a quarter are actively cheering this behavior on because it means their team is "winning."

Genuinely, what the fuck happened to boomers? To any still-sane boomers, did your parents turn completely insane around this point in their lives?

Witnessing much of an entire generation turn evil is horrific.

It would target state universities that use taxpayer dollars to fund election-related sit-ins and grief counseling above and beyond what is normally available to students.
These are all despicable laws, but this one is just...wow. You just lost a member of your community to unaccountable police officers? No therapy for you! Also I can totally see that law getting used to deny funding towards any counseling that focuses oh helping gay students dealing with homophobia.

Okay, that makes sense. And I supposed getting a bunch of people fired from their jobs for being late to work might work up enough collective anger that the government starts to take notice. You have to be disruptive to be noticed.

Lol, no one is fired from work because a protest happened and they were late for work. Aint no job gonna pin that on their employees. You think they wanna go out and hirena whole new task force because of a one off event?

But do you really have to ruin the days (or lives) of those people stuck in traffic in the process?

Blame the powers that be. Getting on the highway and blocking traffic is not the first thought people come up with to solve a problem

I suppose if you subscribe to the notion that you have to make a few sacrifices for the bigger cause, then it's okay.

But it still feels over the line to me.

Black people are dying in the streets and you telling me blocked traffic is too far?

Why does she have a Jewish name?
Is there a message behind this?
Like is it to represent the ZOG allied GOP?

I cannot help but feel a little bit of support for "Suck it up buttercup." Students are adults, and should not be provided with publicly funded support structures exclusive for students.

Much of post secondary education is publically funded. It's not for the benefit of the students. It's for the benefit of a nation as a whole that your young are educated, motivated and emotionally and mentally looked after.

If this is how you feel though are you out there pressuring republicans to strip out all religious accommeodations? Because that's a much bigger deal than student (some barely adults when entering post secondary education) getting counciling.
