I think I noped the fuck out of Era 1 year in. In hindsight that was a remarkable speed for things go to shit. They really could have had this community and ran with it, but instead they decided to go full retard and never grow.

I don't ever check out other gaming forums, but when I do I go straight to the politics section and get triggered by other opinions that we just outright ban on Era because we can't handle anyone that disagrees with us.

I read the news on a daily basis from a few sources.

Not uncommon at all. I am a Jew and I’m queer. I’ve been called a homophobe by them, got permed here (by some of the same type of people who would later run Restera) for alleged supporting and anti-Semite (Trump, a man I didn’t vote for), and then got permed there because of their own antiSemitism when I made a thread about Nintendo’s Israeli store in good faith.

- The unique poster count has not actually grown in the entire 3 years the site has been open...if you were to have a site thats grown to 50k members that figure should be inline and you could actually use that member count as an accurate figure of how healthy the place is

The biggest metric is the one on the first page - right now, the bottom post on era is at 40 minutes old (at 9am UK time). That was unthinkable on old GAF and even last year posts were only 8 minutes out. GAF tends to be within an hour at the same time except the bottom few posts (between 3-8 usually). The GOTY vote year on year has declined in voters. They took a premier tier site and all the users and fucking destroyed it. When it went down, the total online ratio was like 6:1 in era's favour, then it closed to 4:1, now we're at 3:1 or thereabouts with online activity.
As for post activity, it's nice when in context but given those stats and low growth in member numbers mean I just see this in effect
Lastly, you can see the small group of admins and mods have been purified and the remaining group that consolidated power now distance themselves from the main forum and put the burden on submissive, no names that keep appearing in some sort of clandestine choosing ritual. So basically those who will not rock the boat or provide a challenge to authority when needed.

We have to be fair: Reset OTs are usually very good (something I try to do here almost every month, by creating nice OTs that spur discussion) and every once-in-a-blue-moon there's a nice thread with in-depth technical discussion of this or that retro title.
That said, I do believe GAF reflects a more representative sample of gaming's consumer base, as people here are more comfortable indulging their preferences openly, which is not a bad thing. ERA is weirdly Nintendo-centric and occasionally there is a genuinely good game (e.g. Days Gone) that they simply do not allow their users to discuss honestly. It also boggled my mind that they forbade discussion of Kingdom Come: Deliverance - I also think Vávra is kind of a dick, but it was a major title and it ought to be discussed.

Yeah we need more people willing to do OTs. It's difficult because they take time, so you either do OTs or news. I've been doing news for a bit now waiting for the big released coming up so do appreciate all you other folks doing OTs. I know people get obsessed with OTs bit they just have to be segmented with headers really. After the first 50 posts no one looks at it anyway

Best ongoing things currently related to Era are the Discords, the ones where the most prominent staff members aren't shitting up the place that is. I enjoyed posting in several OTs, though the way Era hides them in Hangouts they die down very quick bar the really active members. News threads long became pretty unbearable. Folks aren't discussing, they're pushing tryhard witty one liners based on the 2 things they've heard about the theme or product in question (I swear, 95%+ of the folks talking in these threads at no point had any experience with what's being discussed, gaming or otherwise), and in fact most of the replies are simply pointing out inaccuracies in other people's posts.
The funniest thing is how they permaban people complaining about moderation but said mods literally insult the userbase in some Discords. But hey.
