Resident Evil 4: GNC vs PS2 Comparison

Yes, the other thread already has this, but this comparison is very telling:

GC:

PS2:

poor way to make this thread. you should have saved some pics, host them on imageshack or somewhere else and mix the pics up. i bet most people would be fooled. the difference is not that great, at least not as great as people made it to be during E3

also, i finally got to play the PS2 demo last weekend and it seemed a pretty damn fine port to me

in the other thread I said so ends the sad saga of the Capcom 5 and THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE FUCKING END OF IT

don't dig up corpses after they are buried! necrophilia is not worth it no matter how much your peers pressure you.

I haven't been following this because I don't care too much, but are there any gameplay additions or anything new game-wise in the PS2 version? The GC one looks better to me, but I don't know what to think if there is anything added to the game for PS2

2 new guns, new ada sidequest, new costumes

ada side quest is 5+ hours with a new area

that's what i'm saying. you have to put the two pics side by side to see a difference...but if you were given the PS2 version and had to point out any differences from the GC version you played earlier this year, i bet you wouldn't be able to see any. that's how i felt when i played the demo

The game was originally coded for the GameCube's architecture. What do you expect? It doesn't matter which version looks better... It's a great game, regardless of the fact.

I see a difference but it's small enough that it probably won't be noticable during gameplay.

Hats off to Capcom; this looks like quite the port.

It's a toss-up. The indoor areas look identical. It's the outside areas, at least according to Ruliweb's shots, that are different. We've only seen the beginning of the game, but there's less trees (look at the shots I saved), less texture resolution, and lack of complex fog.

That said, I doubt you'll really notice it much unless you've played the original and have a photographic memory.

I don't understand why there have been RE4 comparison threads on what seems like a weekly basis since the game was first unveiled for the PS2. People that have played the game say there is little difference visually and that the PS2 version has more extra content. At least wait until the game is out to make your comparisons.

Not too much of a difference asided from the stated detail difference, the biggest difference for me is the is the nonexistant color dithering on the PS2 pics, like I said before, Leon's jacket is the biggest tall tale. I never noticed it too much before but side by side the 16-bit color of the pink-greenish blendings all over stand out in comparision.

Deep down, *those* people were hoping it would've looked like this:

In fact, I remember one guy who went as far to say that RE4 PS2 was going to be cancelled when they realize the can't get it to run. :lol

wtf is up with them tree's. they all look stunted on the ps2.

yah the trees on the right of the house are different and less complex. although we should take in account that leon is closer to the houdr in the ps2 shot than gc one, still it does not change the fact about the trees on the right side of the house.

I'd have to look at them side by side to really tell the difference, and even then i'd have to really look in some cases. Pretty damn good effort by capcom.

Look at the ground textures in the scenes where the ground is supposed to be covered with leaves. The GC version looks much better. The lighting superiority is also pretty obvious, imo.

With that said, I think that RE4 is more about the overall atmosphere of the game than a few leaves and trees.

better lighting, textures and more geometry in the GC version. No suprise really. The PS2 port is still pretty impressive though.

any of you played the gc version on a widescreen tv? i don't like re4 enough to buy it twice, but i'd gladly accept sparse foliage and brown fog if the game would actually fill the screen. these screenshots only tell half the story.

The PS2 version looks really solid, although it looks like it doesn't have real-time lighting.. I can't remember any recent game that didn't have it. :/

Yes, I have one.

using the zoom function on my widescreen is good enough for me..image quality takes a small..and I mean very small hit...I'd rather take that hit, then take the hit the ps2 version has.

Looks fine on my widescreen TV.

1/3 less resolution than a proper anamorphic picture isn't a "small hit." and my cheapy widescreen doesn't have a zoom function anyway.

There's a noticeable difference in some areas...it's mostly the lighting that suffers a hit, the PS2 rev just looks flat. I guess it won't affect me much, since I've never played RE4. :P

The difference in quality between zoomed and non is far less than the quality of PS2 --> GC.

If you're in Drohne's shoes and your TV can't zoom, then your choice is an obvious one.

Wow, the PS2 looks low res compared to the GC version. The lack of lighting and the muddy colors really don't help.

People who state the versions look identical are nuts.

Yep, get the GameCube version.

The one thing the PS2 clearly has over the GC version (oddly enough) is image quality. In addition to the higher resolution (anamorphic mode), it runs in 24-bit color. The GC version is beyond dithered and it really hurts the overall image each scene is attempting to create.

I see loads of differences in favor of the GC version, though. Not suprised in the least. Some of them almost seem to be simple cosmetic changes rather than actual downgrades while other things were clearly cut down to allow the game to function better on PS2.

it does look lower res..though, the textures definately are..and on normal tvs, it definately looks that way..only when running in widescreen would it have a larger res, but still makes little difference since almost everything looks downgraded.

image quality..means less dithering maybe, but as far as textures and lighting..there is no comparison...I'd take the dithering over almost any lack of lighting anyday.
