Resident Evil 4: GNC vs PS2 Comparison

The one thing the PS2 clearly has over the GC version (oddly enough) is image quality. In addition to the higher resolution (anamorphic mode), it runs in 24-bit color. The GC version is beyond dithered and it really hurts the overall image each scene is attempting to create.

Yet the GC versions look crisper and clearly, thanks to the more vibrant colors.

Hmm these shots really show that the downgrade was bigger than I thought. Less trees are the new no invididually rendered grass. I think the PS2 port could've looked better. There's just no excuse for there not being lighting effects when you fire your gun. MGS3 has that. :P

I see loads of differences in favor of the GC version, though. Not suprised in the least. Some of them almost seem to be simple cosmetic changes rather than actual downgrades while other things were clearly cut down to allow the game to function better on PS2.

I'd agree with you about color fidelity, there's no question there. I don't think the difference between PS2's true anamorphic and GC's zoomed modes are noticable, though. I suppose it depends on the scaler of your TV, too.

Playing devil's advocate, I bet you all the indoor levels look equal, or better, because of the 24-bit color.

No, the textures were still downgraded, and alot of effects are missing on walls, water..etc.

Looking at the in door levels that we have now kind of favor the PS2 version because of the 24-bit color. I would like to see how other indoor areas hold-up also.

Textures are lower-resolution, polygons missing, details missing, no lighting, why are we even comparing? The GC version is superior. End of story! These comparisons are stupid.

image quality..means less dithering maybe, but as far as textures and lighting..there is no comparison...I'd take the dithering over almost any lack of lighting anyday.
exactly. No 24bit colour rubbish is going to be able to change that.

dithering makes textures look worse. havent you played gc re4? the textures were not the exactly top notch, a lot thanks to dithering.

Why are we comparing?

1) It was said that they were virtually equal, so people are obviously interested in discovering whether or not that was actually true

2) The PS2 is vastly inferior hardware in comparison to the Gamecube, so it is even MORE interesting to see how well it was able to handle the best looking title on the GC.

"System wars" hardly matter anymore...

Yes, extremely true. Regardless of original texture resolution or quality, the end result was often quite a bit worse due to the severe dithering.

Ok so dithering makes the cube version's textures look worse. But they are still sharper looking than the ps2 version so how do you spin that?

Aside from that one pic of the guy being spiked where the wood is obviously downgraded most of the textures seem dead on, but now without the greenish pink blanding.

From these pics, the PS2 version has much worse textures and details in the indoor levels. Not to mention the lightning, that's most obvious.

No wonder GCN is the choice for RE games this gen.

I don't know if its my tv, but dithering only was bad to me during cut scenes.
It is your TV.

On lower end TVs, I've found that the dithering was perfectly acceptable. In fact, on some sets, you could almost never notice it. When playing in 480p on a higher quality set, however, it becomes incredibly obvious and distracting.

Wait, wait, indoor levels? Surely you meant the outdoor details in the outdoor sections cause the pics we have don't favor the GC indoor sections in regards to textures that much if any at all, it's an example of the 24-bit being at the advantage.

I disagree totally. RE4 isn't the best looking title on the GCN, that's for sure.

Your replies for the most part of been pretty pathetic in this thread, but dithering has never been so bad that it's distracting in a game. I play on a 480p Samsung widescreen TV and my GameCube games always look better than the PS2 counterparts. The dithering isn't "incredibly obvious and distracting" unless you are an anal nitpicker.

Maybe..my tv definately isn't the highest quality, but for only a 30'' widescreen hd set..it looks better than my brothers 50 inch samsung dlp as far as image is concerned. Like I said earlier running re4 in zoomed widescreen and using progressive, I didn't notice much of any hit in image quality.

Dithering didn't bother so much overall the grand visual design as I think RE4 is one of the best lookings games to come out this generation and in a way defaults for me the best looking GC game, but I noticed it overtime and now because of the pics, I'm really starting to notice it so I can see the improvements in some of the PS2 pics. One of the worse case example of it was the waving curtains in the mansion as I can recall.

Dark10x: Wow, PS2 is 'vastly inferior hardware' compared to GC? Unless you're being sarcastic I wonder how you would have reacted if an 'Ntard' had made the same claim in some other thread.

Yes indoor levels. Look how bland the wall PS2 is.

Can't link to the PS2 pic. But compare this one to that:

And the fire! Woah.

And stop the 24-bit non-sense already.

And yet i remember someone calling him a respected poster on GAF :lol :lol :lol

You can compare the shittiest PS2 game to a decent GC game and Mr 10x would still claim it being leagues ahead of the GC version.

pathetic, just patheticl

In your opinion what is the best looking title on the GC?

Well in my opinion REmake is the best looking title on the GCN. And this gen.

If pre-rendered doesn't count and for full 3D, then Metroid Prime 1/2, or Mario Sunshine, or Wind Waker, or the next Zelda I suppose. I'm actually disappointed of RE4 in graphics, just my opinion though.

F*ck this forum. Good lord. I can't believe how things are twisted around. I should probably take the lead of a few others and just screw around or something...

For the record, I think the Gamecube featured the best engineered technology this generation. I certainly prefer PS2 as a games platform and its bizarre architecture fascinates me, but the GC is simply superior.

Also for the record, I have no intentions of purchasing the PS2 version of RE4. It's extremely interesting to compare each version, but the GC version seems as if it will remain the superior version and, as a result, I have no reason to "downgrade".

RE0 looked more refined IMO.

Ok, ok. I was a bit harsh, but it's been a pretty common thing for you to hail Sony and piss on Nintendo fans.

The PS2 version looks really solid, although it looks like it doesn't have real-time lighting.. I can't remember any recent game that didn't have it. :/

Well something's going on there.

Just imagine how it should look on the inevitable 360 version. No dithering, maximum lighting effects, 24-bit color, and sexy trees. :D

Both the GCN and PS2 versions are very good looking for this generation. On a widescreen display, the PS2 version will gain resolution and artifact advantages over the zoomed GCN version.

Bland the wall is? You mean that it doesn't have the greenish-pink blanding everywhere? Look at most of the pics, that's the biggest difference because of the 16-bit color, it isn't nonsense, it exists right there on the walls and wood. Look, its in all over Leon's jacket too, in all the pics, unless a leather jacket as well as his hair is supposed to have green/pink highlights.

Again look at the ground and Leon's hair/jacket.

If people are wondering what the 16-bit and 24-bit difference is, it's right there. I still think the GC version wins overall but this is an area which favors the PS2 version.

WELCOME TO TEAM GAF APATHY!

The GAF we once loved is dead, say hello to Gamefaqs ver. 6.8.

I don't find find REremake very impressive from a technical standpoint from an artisctic standpoint yeah is impressive but not from a technical one.

before entering this thread I thought Capcom made miracle and made the PS2 version almost identical to the GC one, but the PS2 version has several noticiable downgrades like the lighting and trees for example.

I'm still getting the ps2 version though.

Maybe, but I compare Rebecca in both games(in both original and cowgirl outfits) and somehow she seems to look a bit better in REmake. That's why REmake > RE0 to me. :D

Yeah the pic I posted you can see the cracks on the wall obviously for the GCN pic, but PS2 there is almost none at all, just blur. :\ And the same to the ground.

Looking at the pics its pretty obvious that GC has the 'superior' version, it's still an impressive port considering the difference in architecture of the platforms involved and the time contraints the team worked in.

Most likely the port was a late decision given the GC's slow death over the last year so I think that one of the main reasons for the visual 'downgrades' may in fact be that Capcom didn't really have the time to work on PS2 version,

I'd like to see some high res pics from a wide-screen EDTV directly comparing similar scenes.

It would be interesting to see a comparison for those of us with 16:9 sets. I'm curious how much of a difference the added resolution of the PS2 version brings?

my 2c....

The GC version looked really nice - i like the IQ on GC games above any this gen. The game was out AGES ago - i finished it and thought it was awesome.

The PS2 version , of which i've seen a rolling demo, looks really nice too - does it look quite as nice? to most people, it will. Hell, i thought it looked better - but i'll wait until i've bought the PS2 version. The big bonus though is the extra content. MORE of a game that rocks! How can anyone not dig this?!

So throwing out the farce of conversation about which is graphically superiour, because quite frankly, it looks like being a bit of a toss up and it's not like one MURDERS the other...

GC version :
+ You could have played it ages ago, finished it several times, and moved on.
+ It's on the console you prefer

PS2 Version :
+ You get to play extra content.
+ if you already played the GC version, you get to play it again and get more
+ It's on the console you prefer

Either version ROCK.
Start loving the game not the consoles.

GIVE CAPCOM YOU MONIES - they deserve it for godsake.

I think they have more than enough time to work on the PS2 port actually. Because the PS2 port was announced last October, so at least a full year is more than enough time for a port I would say.

Plus actually there was rumor about the PS2 port in last January(from gameinformer, before even they had the exclusive on the RE4 mansion to village changes!) actually. So God knows how long they've been working on the port. :lol

And it's fishy how they all of a sudden changed RE4(from those mansion pics to village) don't you think? And IMO the former mansion RE4 looks much better than this village RE4. Maybe they did the change so they can make a PS2 port more faithfully? Who knows.
