You'll surely find from playing or even just watching Resident Evil 4 that all this sort of high praise is warranted, though it's worth reiterating that this is one of those games that you ought to approach with as few preconceived notions as possible. Just remember that for as amazing as this game looks, the experience is somehow even more awe-inspiring on the GameCube--but not to the extent that you should feel like you're missing out by opting for the PS2 version instead (especially since the extra content is well worthwhile). The bottom line is, if you've been entertained by any other mature-rated action game recently, then chances are you'll be blown away by this one. It's that good.

Just for reference, the cube score is a 9.6.

9.3 is a good score, but I think it was lower only because they've already played the same game earlier this year.

I've got my copy already ordered though. Can't wait to go through the game a few more times, and play through the extra content.

A few additional weapons and unlockable costumes are also new to this version, but it's not necessarily worth getting a second copy of Resident Evil 4 just for this extra content, especially since none of it is available up front. Besides, while Resident Evil 4 looks incredible on the PS2, it doesn't look quite as good as on the GameCube, where it has richer colors, sharper-looking environments, and nicer lighting effects. Larger foes also look better on the GameCube (while smaller foes melt away faster when killed), and the earlier version's loading times are also shorter. Pauses during the interactive cutscenes are also longer by an instant on the PS2, making the interactivity feel a bit less seamless. So, since the underlying gameplay is exactly the same, the slightly but noticeably better-looking GameCube original ultimately still has the edge. That about covers the differences how Resident Evil 4 compares between the PS2 and GameCube, but if you're unfamiliar with what makes the game itself so good, keep going.

This review actually about jives with what I was expecting. I'm a RE whore, so I have my GC version to have it first and for the slightly better graphics/load times/etc, and I'll have my PS2 version for all the new stuff. Definitive version is???

The definitive version will be the inevitable port of the game to next-gen consoles in a year or two. Just like they did with RE2 and RE3, I can easily see Capcom porting RE GC, RE0, and RE4 to one of the next-gen consoles with little/nothing added, but better load times/sharper visuals.

It doesn't matter. The game is brilliant, no matter what console you play it on.

Oh I agree, I have the LE of the GC version, and I've got the Premium Edition for PS2 preordered, I just like seeing the fanboys go at it.

Xbox360 to pimp an RE5 360 demo. :D

Indeed, and this release has been ripe with controversy. It's a shame really, for all the arguing that was done, it could have been appreciated that an excellent game is reaching more people and those that loved it on the gamecube will have more content to play around with. Simple as that.

they do hate sony! why am i the only one who sees it?

Ninja Gaiden 9.4
Ninja Gaiden Black 9.4

MGS2 PS2 9.6
MGS2 Substance PS2 7.5

you see?! they dont even give re-releases for PS2 a fair score, unlike them for Xbox. i'm so sick of gamespot. and RE4 PS2 will never get above 9.0, even with the added content. farcry instincts though with inferior graphics and some added content got the same score as the original. remember this post when they review RE4 for the PS2. maybe then you will see the obvious :|

What's tilt? That's the only difference in score breakdown between the two.

it probably reflects how this is a port and thus should be scored lower....

Tilt is like the "fun factor". It basically reflects how impressed the reviewer was by the sum total of the game's parts.

this is so true. I kinda regret getting RE4 GC now. I am never buying another first edition of a Resident Evil game again.

Weird, given how the PS2 port review reads, the graphics scores should not be the same.

Well in even that in context it still is one of the best looking games this generation, port and original. If they could give decimals for individuals they would probably give the PS2 version a 9.5 then as they feel it's much more deserving than a 9 to give it a 10.

I was thinking that, but I'm assuming the graphics scale is based on games for that system. If that's the case, doing a GC x PS2 graphics comparison isn't fair.

Since Gamespot's overall score is determined by a formula that depends on each individual category, tilt (as the name suggests) is used to push the overall score up or down depending on what the reviewer desires. Sometimes a game will be really fun and have extremely poor graphics so the reviewer will probably give it a high tilt score to "tilt" the overall score higher. As you can guess, a low tilt will be given to a game with excellent visuals but very poor gameplay so that the overall score won't be as inflated by the high score for visuals.

Well, RE4 did come out for the GC back in January, so it's been a while, plus the game was so awesome it's not like we didn't get our money's worth. :)

I would have preferred to see another release of the game on the GC with the PS2 version's new features, or an Xbox version, but I'll take what I can get. RE4 was such a blast to play through that for once I'll happy that Capcom is milking the game and buy whatever upgrades they put out.

So it gives more control over the weighted scores outcome, well that's interesting. Still I would have thought that the gameplay, graphics, sound, and value scores would be enough, whatever works for them I guess.

There is no definitive version. Only an idiot would call either the GCN or PS2 version that. Play whatever you have access to, because it's a great game. Want better visuals and things like that? Get the GCN version. Want more extras? Get the PS2 version. Are you a RE Whore? Get both.

Oh no they didn't!

I can feel the Nintendo fans preparing.

Better get the popcorn ready.

Seriously, though, this is GOTY on whichever system you decide to play it on. Not to be missed!

Aaarrgh, what does that even mean ?!?!?

It's when the machine turns off all the lights, stops the flippers, and ends your ball immediately without even giving you any goddamn bonus. I just barely nudged the fucking thing. Goddamn machine.

Indeed.

:lol

I'm glad the truth is being spoken. Game is great, but looks best on the Gamecube. Probably didn't take a degree in quantum physics to figure that was going to be the case anyhow.

Superior version indeed.

That's right, Solid the conspiracy theorist is ousted finally. Where is he anyway, he'll probably complain about how Gamespot is still biased because IGN gave it a 9.5 or something.

I think only Ninja Gaiden Black and the GC RE4 have scored higher than this from GS this year. Please don't skip this game no matter hwo you play it.

Any pics of the PS2 SE? Is it exclusive to EB, like the GC one was exclusive to GameStop? And as such, does it have a giant "EBGAMES" stamped on the metal case?
