Rev2 not survival horror though. It just a low budget action game.

There is no exploration at all, is entirely linear and puzzles barely exist, those that do can barely be called puzzles and the best example of an actual puzzle gets the clue wrong.

To call the balance of combat, puzzles and exploration 'spot on' is wildly inaccurate.

I'll get into why Rev2 Raid sucks later.

Let's agree to disagree then. Not like I ever expect anyone to change their mind about anything, that's why I usually don't even get into these types of arguments.

Reading the Revelations remaster thread, I completely forgot there was dodging in that game. It comes up so infrequently and when it does I'm so surprised that I mess up anyway. What a shitty implementation of a dodge mechanic.

I'm pretty sure they design the players camera and animations totally different for the two, so if they offered both one of them would look janky as hell.

I'm 99% sure it will be classic angles

Yeah. The only thing we most likely won't get are pre-rendered backgrounds (Doesn't give the visual oomph it used to and much less interactivity with the enviroments.) and tank controls. I feel pretty indifferent about the controls, but whatever they do, I hope they pick one method and stick with it and no wishy-washy "You can choose old school tank controls or modern ones if you want." bullshit, where the game and enemies aren't really tuned to either control method. That's the reason the modern controls in the HD REmake were awful.

Yeah I would assume realtime backgrounds, which I'm totally fine with given the fidelity they are able to work with now (and it could give some cool interactivity with the environment!). I think they'll still have tank controls and offer the new control style as well ala REmake/0 HD since tank controls are still the best method for camera angle switches, and it doesn't take much work to have both control styles for those who want them.

No matter what's chosen. 100% they aren't going to do prerendered. They'll stick to Dino Crisis/CVX style where the entire environment is 3D to allow for easier future porting and more dynamic angles .

3d backgrounds age poorly. I hope they keep pre rendered background like originals. REmake still looks phenomenal. I think 1,2,3 still looks really good for a PS1 game. I played Dino crisis 2 again couple of years back I think the background still looks really good even after 17 years.

EDIT: just read jawmuncher post above. Was DC 3d? The background I mean.

It worked fine in Siren. Not like there's much animation for Ethan to speak of in RE7 either way.

The Final Fantasy games (7, 8 and especially 9) still hold up as well.

In general I'd like to see more games try pre-rendered backgrounds again.

I've only played a bit of the first Siren so I can't really comment on that, but isn't RE a lot more combat focused? And RE7 is ridiculously polished too, I'd hate to have some awkward 5th generation looking animations/camera. When making first person games the devs usually don't even give the character a head, and the camera and arms stretch all over the place to make things look nice in the first person perspective.

Ethan uses a lot of expressive hand gestures and stuff in RE7 that i imagine would have been executed quite differently in 3rd person.

Crysis 2 in third person.

RE0's backgrounds look crazy good in the remaster.
Pretty sure they aren't going with pre-rendered for this though.
Hell, it'll probably be 3rd person.

Man, I have to force myself to forget a RE2 remake is coming, the hype is insane.

Compared to RE4-6 sure, compared to RE7 not so much.

Here's an MGSV first person mod for example, works well enough for a game that wasn't built for that.

Don't see why RE can't make it work with a little effort, especially with how little character animation there is in general in RE7 compared to previous REs.

Finally started RE0.

This game doesn't have the best rep but so far it's not so bad, digging the train setting.

Anything to keep in mind to make the play through more enjoyable and/or less frustrating?

There are some good tips on the last page or two I think. Basically, keep the hookshot with you, keep items in a central location, and the game is stingier than others with health so don't go crazy with healing.

Where by "keep hookshot with you" we mean leave it somewhere where it's easy to reach. The bastard takes up two slots, so carrying it around is a bad idea.

And use Billy as your main player. He has a much greater stamina than Rebecca. However, keep in mind that there are moments where the game unexpectedly forces you to use either Billy or Rebecca, so be prepared (meaning, don't treat Billy as your gun-handling character and Rebecca as a healing & items only character).

Also, near the end, there's an instant kill enemy that might kill you (especially if you don't expect it).

Thanks guys, will definitely keep those in mind.

The item management and partner mechanics sound like they might be annoying but I've always wanted to try being able to leave items wherever in previous classic REs instead of just boxes.

I'm always stingy as heck with health in RE so hopefully that part won't be too bad. And I guess I'll keep one gun and ammo on Rebecca at all times.

I stopped right after the train section, think by then I was burnt out after platinumed the first game.

Really need to go back to it.

What I really liked was controlling the other character with your right stick even if it's not tank control. For the "get the hell out of there" situations.

In the mansion I usually leave the items in the entrance hall. You have to go through it all the time and it's directly connected to most wings of the building.
Tbh it was never a big issue for me.
As for characters, as has been said already, play as Billy whenever you can, he can take way more damage than Rebecca, using her will cause you to burn through your healing items real quick. If you're heading into a room with enemies, just leave her outside until you clean the place up.

The two character thing never really bothered me (apart from maybe 1 boss fight) other than that they never do anything particularly interesting with the concept. But the item management is such a clusterfuck that really wore down my enjoyment of the game. They did it to do a QOL improvement from people complaining about having to return to the item boxes, which is so dumb because a big part of the classic RE games tension and careful backtracking is designed around repeated trips to the item box. Now that people can drop things anywhere, they couldn't really design stuff like that. And to top it all off, it doesn't even feel like a QOL improvement because without item boxes the floor becomes littered with items that you have to carefully pick the right one up, and when you move to a new area you have to do like three whole trips to get all your stuff from one place to the other. It's madness.

That controlling the second character is such a smart idea, though it's only really possible due to the fixed camera angles so it wouldn't work in RE5-RE6 or most other games since those use the second stick for camera control. Still, really good stuff.

Just made it off the train, kinda wish it was longer since I really liked the setting.

One of the best tips I came across randomly is the item drop trick in the train, got to the new area and am filthy stinkin rich with items thanks to it.

So far I'm enjoying the game quite a bit.

Just kinda saved yesterday and left the items in the sewers but will move them next time, thanks.

And yeah, I just kinda scouted forward at one point with Billy just to see what's ahead and the dude can really take a beating. It's like night and day compared to Rebecca.

The item thing isn't so bad so far, I've thought about being able to do something like this while playing REmake and it's fine so far. On the one hand yeah you gotta move items but on the other you also save on a lot of time backtracking because you couldn't pick something up or left it behind. Thinking back at the train section I'm already pinpointing stuff I could have left behind close to their location of use instead of carrying it around.

The partner mechanic is working about as I expected so far, some hiccups but nothing terrible.

Trust me, the item management becomes a pain in the ass the further you get into the game because the more items you will have to carry over a further distance.

The other games had good backtracking, since the level and enemy design worked in tandem to always make it tense and interesting. In 0 it just becomes unnecessary tedium.

It's still a decent game, but it totally misunderstands the balance of inventory management that was key to the "survival horror" of the series. I was glad that 7 wouldn't let you drop items wherever you wanted, even if the inventory gets way too big as you keep expanding it.

RE7s biggest inventory fault was not taking keys from you when you were done. That was a pretty pointless and unneeded step

It would have been fine if there were more doors and stuff so there would be a little more mystery as to if you still needed them (since you have plenty of inventory space). But there were just way too few locked doors and they were all super clearly marked.

Fair enough, still interesting to at least try it in one entry.

Guessing this game is more enjoyable on subsequent playthroughs when you know where to leave items better etc.

Sherry Birkin

She has been handed an absolutely shitty deck of cards in terms of life. Her mother was an Umbrella scientist who died because of her research. Her father experimented on her and infected her. She was taken in by the government and had extensive testing done on her. She's basically press ganged into serving the government just to have a life outside a facility. Despite all of this, she's one of the most good-natured, optimistic character in the franchise.

She also gives my favorite line of RE 6: "You can blame your father all you want. But at some point, you have to take responsibility for your own actions." *Shoulder checks Jake* You tell him, Sherry.

Moira Burton

She's got one of the most solid character arcs in the entire franchise, some teenage edge aside. Throughout Revelations 2 you see her really come into her own, learn the ropes, and learn to stand on her own two feet. Her and Barry's reconnecting is just pure heartwarming cheese.

Especially in Vendetta. Successful, intelligent, confident, takes no shit, and still has a strong moral compass after 20 years of Bioterror shit.

Worst Characters:

Simmons

2338234-derek_c._simmons.jpg

He's a creepy fuck who couldn't handle being rejected by Ada so he rewrites his top researchers DNA to make her look like Ada, kicking off RE 6's plot. By the end he's spouting gibberish about "protecting the country" and being even more of a creepy fuck with Ada. Worst villain in the franchise and a poor follow up to Albert Wesker from RE 5.

Carla Radames

She actually could have been a sympathetic villain had the writing been better. Forced to be an experiment for her own research, her identity taken by her boss, starting to lose her own sense of identity. Tone down some of her evil antics and you could actually feel for the character. Instead, she goes on a tirade and tries to destroy the entire world and create "a new one" like every other RE villain. By the end she's every bit as one dimensional as Simmons.

Jessica Sherewat

She spends most of her screen time getting super jealous of Jill. And by jealous I mean, like, super fucking spiteful. She also complains constantly. It isn't until they get to the ship that she talks about anything but Jill or complaining. The entire time she can't take the hint that Chris ain't got time for her shit.

Jessica: "So, Jill, Was it?"

Chris: "Was what? Stay Focused!"

Jessica: "She was your partner from before, right?"

Chris: "Yeah, my partner. From before. What about it?"

Jessica: "I WAS, you know, JUST ASKING!"

You know what? I'm just going to say most of the Revelations cast:

My worst basically be any little kids that have made their way into the series.

Eveline (Just everything here is so bad it impacts my enjoyment of RE7)
Sherry (in RE2 not RE6)
Natalia (More for her clothes and later plot threads)

I stand by that ATM a lot of RE's current weakest elements especially when it comes to plot are tied to the child characters.
Thankfully one such plot should be wrapped up. But we're left with just a random ass cliffhanger on another.

I thought Alex Wesker was a pretty dope villain in REV 2 so I'd really like to see her not be stuck in a child's body. It would feel like an annoying rehash of 7, where as you say Jaw, the Evaline character was super annoying.

Those character designs for Revelations look like shit, good lord. Not inspiring confidence in the game for me...

But since I noticed you guys forgot to mention her in your "worst character" lists, I'll do it for you: Helena

;)

Finally beat Code Veronica. As much as I enjoyed it, the frequent wtf design choices really wore me down lol.

The good:
-It has some of the best level design in the series I think. I really like how they twisted the areas the second time you go through them.
-some really solid atmosphere despite the lack of pre-rendered backgrounds
-the story was a really entertaining mix of baroque gothicism and goofy as fuck melodrama, there were a ton of cool individual moments
-the soundtrack was excellent
-I respect the scope of the game and the ambition with all the variety and maximizing the use of all the spaces in it.

The eh:
-3D graphics lack the detail and charm of the prerendered ones.
-I personally found the game too long. Like I said, I respect the scope, but when you put a false climax halfway through your game that kinda burns me out. This type of game works better with a lot tighter pacing imo.
-Zombie headshots aren't very satisfying.

The bad:
-Fuck bandersnatches. Shit enemy.
-The bosses were uniformly terrible. Worst in the series. Either completely broken design that you have to spam health and attack in order to win or use cumbersome first person aiming.
-Fuck those poison moths in the save hallway.
-There's too much backtracking and often it's not done well. I love backtracking in classic RE but too often here they would extend the length by having you go all the way across the map two or three times to get yet another puzzle piece to advance the section of the game you're in. And instead of cool jump scares to liven it up they just lazily have zombies suddenly be in the rooms now. Like even in the end game they still have you doing this shit.
-Fuck how they handled character switching, throwing you straight into a boss battle immediately after the other character had one and you left all your items in the box for that character to use. Wtf.
-A few too many sections where you have to nimbly avoid something with tank controls. Like those annoying Wesker bots that send hunters after you or that dumb cinder block thing that can crush you.

I think that about covers the shitty aspects. Despite what it sounds like I still enjoyed the game, it's just there are so many wtf moments that drag it down from what could have been one of the better games in the series after 1-4.

Requisite RE ranking time:
4>REmake>2>3>1>5>7>CV>REV2>6>0

Does RE 0 get better after the train? I'm running into the same damn problem that I did before: I get halfway through the train, start losing steam, and then when I go to load up the game... I just think "Why not just play REmake or try RE 2/3 again if I want classic RE"? The backtracking just kills the game for me. Don't get me wrong: It's gorgeous even 14 years later, the atmosphere is great, the sound design is solid... but that backtracking.
