The most important question:
does Wesker die this time?

Also:

The music group tomandandy, who performed Afterlife score, returned to score Retribution <- awesome. I liked the OST for Afterlife.

Re - Question:
He doesn't.
With some more details:
He's barely in the movie too. His role is similar to the one in RE4 (the game) were he appears through videos/holograms talking. There's a weird alliance of sorts between him and the others (Alice, Ada, Leon). Basically, he "needs" Alice, so he sends Ada to retreive her as she's been held captive by Jill and the clones of One, Rain and Carlos -all controlled/created by the Red Queen and used as test-subjects across multipl scenarios/cities. Leon and Barry ally with Wesker and enter the main Umbrella facility were Alice's held captive to retrieve "something" (somethign been a weapon). The weapon turns out to be Alice, and Wesker at the end injects "the powers" back to her; so she can help save humanity. Turned out ,that since the first movie; the Red Queen became obssesed to contain the virus and because of the outbreak, she decided to kill eveyrone by sendng more BOWs and stuff, hence everything that happened since the end of the first movie.

By the way, to those wondering...
What happens to the game characters:
-Jill:
She's controlled by the Red Queen using the scarab on her chest. Though the whole movie, she kills and fights everyone. She defeats Alice too at the end, only to have Alice (easily) remove the scarab from her chest; turning Jill back to good. Aside mentioning during the intro (which is a summary of the previous films) that she was brainwashed by Umbrella, nothing else explains what happened to her or explains her absense from Extinction.

-Chris and Claire Redfield:
Only shown during the intro/summary using footage from the previous film(s). During the attack to Arcadia, they're not shown at all. While Alice is captured and questioned by Jill; she aks about Chris and Claire...only to not receive any answer. According to earlier interviews, Milla Jovovich said that they were both captured by Umbrella, but in the movie per se; it is not mentioned.

-Ada:
Through the movie, she's mostly with Alice. Her first encounter with her, is a remake of the scene were Leon and Ada meet in RE4 (the game). Good fighter and has the same hookshot/gun from the game that she gives to Alice at one point. After that, she's captured by Jill, punched by Rain and left unconcious untill nearly the end of the movie. There seems to be an interest between Leon and Ada, but nothing is mentioned.

-Leon:
Wears his RE4 jacket early in the movie, to then take it off look like he did during the rest of RE4 (no jacket, black shirt). He has knowledge about guns, and Las Plagas and knows how to fight and evade them. He barely talks and doesn't seem to like/trust Alice. Only cares to perform his mission and seems interested in Ada. At the end of the movie, he put his hand on Ada's leg, which surprises Ada while she removes his hand. :p

-Barry:
Wears his "REmake" costume. A few dialogs, a little sarcastic, likes to smoke and is a good fighter. During an attack by Jill and the clones, he's wounded by a Licker but surives and decides to use his Magnum after running out of ammo. As he's told to surrender or they'll kill Ada, he raises his arms, and is shot by One and falls. Only to get up, pick the Magnum -which he at some point threw in the air- and shoots One and kills him; then he's shot by the other clones and is killed.

-Wesker:
Mentioned earlier, so..copy-paste: He's barely in the movie too. And yeah, tomandandy are great. The soundtrack is different to the one in the previous movie but still awesome. The end credits songs also featuring Chino Moreno (Deftones) was my favorite; though many hate it. The intro song was really nice and different too.

Was going to see a late showing last night but was too tired. Might go today though depending on how busy the theater is.

How well do they handle Leon, Ada, and Barry's characters? They've always been questionable about that.

Wesker was perfect though.

Was awful, like all the previous movies... so yea it was goofy fun. Some really great action scenes they put out like the zombie corridor fight, but the movie had several sequences that just went on and on for way too long. Mainly with boring shootouts that they keep going back to which just involves characters back and forth shooting at each other with very little real action.... just really long scenes of pew pew that at times made me think they replayed footage to extend run time. Music was good like the last film. Premise and such of the movie really wasn't as goofy as it sounded though, as trailers really made things seem bat shit insane yet it's all explained in dialogue in less than 5 mins.

But yea, large set up for RE6

Regarding Ada, the actress playing her decided to watch Resident Evil: Degeneration in order to prepare for the role.

I'll let you work out what is wrong with that.

Well it's not like Ada had much of a personality or character to really play. Course that applies to almost the entire RE game cast outside of Wesker. Wesker is like the only RE character in the games to have been consistent.

I disagree. The entire main cast (well, minus RE4 Leon) are pretty consistent when it comes to their characters.

Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
It was terribly awesome, or awesomely terrible, depending on how you want to take it. So many little things to just laugh at the cheese/improbability and have a good time with.

Some of the shootout scenes do go on for forever without any non-faceless lackey dying, but it was basically everything I was hoping for, and the ending will probably blow you away in its insanity.

As Action movies go, I'd prob say Apocalypse >/= Retribution > Afterlife > Extinction. Can't really compare the first in that regard.

Well, you could say she did it as a twofold. To study characters AND learn English as I've heard that she learned English just for this movie. If so, smart "killing two birds with one stone" approach for an actor and not something to be laughed at by GAF.

Was ehhhh about the movie. Saw it last night with friends and I have to say, Afterlife felt like a better movie in setting things up...

This one truly felt like absolute filler from start to beginning. I loved the music and it was kinda cool seeing both Barry, Leon & Ada in their "game costumes".

The friends I went with, and myself had a real laugh at a particular logo within the movie
three of us are former GameStop employees while the fourth member was out former manager (he's still with the company)
.

And after watching it last night, I can barely remember a damn thing about it lol.

If it wasn't a mistake on Nemesis's part (i.e. he meant "Damnation" and not "Degeneration"), there's no Ada in RE: Degeneration. ;)

I did not like this movie at all. I enjoyed afterlife, but this felt like such a chore to sit through. They just try so hard to with bringing characters from the games in, despite being a radically different story. It's just jarring.

The commercial for Devil May Cry was better than the whole movie.

Was it for the game or a teaser for the movie?

Saw it. Nothing outstandingly good or bad about it. Another installment. Another 3 years to the next one.

They did go the extra bit to make Barry standout as a badass which was nice.

The very beginning and the very end are the best bits.

The film suffered more from movie tropes than the others. Every time they shot a car it showed a close-up of the bullets hitting the petrol tank (because we wouldn't want an exploding car to seem unrealistic!). Everyone fires infinite ammo. If you wear a mask you die from one shot by the dozens, if you have a face all the bullets keep going magically around you.

Everything looked more fake than usual. The beards looked like they were glued on. The Red Queen looked significantly worse than her appearances in 1 and 3. Even the stuff shown to be real in previews looked CG.

There is really, really little dialogue in the movie. As Anderson said, he purposely cut most of it out to "keep up the pace". That really shows how little faith he must have had in it. Nothing critical to the movies' canon could possibly be interesting so fill it up with guns and explosions. Even xXx2 is fun to watch if you fast forward all the talking and watch the action scenes.

No real reason to bring characters back from the first film. They were just faces and it's not like there's any nostalgia to tap in to.

Overall I'd say it's on par with Extinction, which I consider the most boring but not the most offensively bad of the films.

Well, at least she looks good.
(Then again, that worked so well with Jill in RE2...)

Sony did the same thing for Kate Beckinsale with the last Underworld movie, which became the largest grossing movie in the series. They know what's up.

Funny thing is both movies have the same plot:
our badass, hot chick is captured. Someone helps her escape. She dresses some black, tight, leather suit conveniently available, finds a daughter and fights a corporation that throws monsters at her.
.

Retribution was like the others. I was satisfied. Maybe too many gun shooting that added nothing like someone mentioned before.

Can't wait for RE6, though. It had better have all the main cast together -- Jill, Chris, Claire, Leon, Ada and Alice.

I REALLY hope it's the last one. Seems like a logical conclusion with the set up. And no more
Alice
after that either so why bother.

IMO Extinction is by far the best, it's the only one that feels like a movie to me. The second one and particularly Afterlife feel like... some kind of weird tech demos somehow. The first movie is just fucking crap to me although I realize many people for some reason think it's the only decent one.

But yeah Extinction felt like a proper "movie" to me, don't really know how to explain it... something about the film had some real grit to it, the lighting was a lot better, there was a lot more focus on characters, etc.

Then again Russel Mulcahy is a far more talented director than anyone else on the series (Alexander Witt and Anderson).

Saw this yesterday. Definitely enjoyable though I doubt I will watch it again. Middle-tier or the next best for this franchise (original is best). Worth a watch.

Pro moments:
+ Opening
+
The axe twins. Awesome scale effect and just really tense.
+ General mindfuckery of the
first 30minutes
.
+ Paul.W.Anderson knows 3D framing well. Also less slow-mo than the last one.
+ Some of the fighting was actually pretty stylistic.

Cons:
-
Alice explaining to the audience what is going to happen.
-
The level structure was hammy.
-
Leon, Jill & Ada are wooden as hell.

I think the first one was the only one where the threat of zombies was actually a threat. It gets cut down to cartoon violence where monsters are simply low budget SFX scenes.

For anyone on the fence about seeing this, these films are great date movies.

Just throwing that out there.

This is very true. It covers all the bases, really. Action, horror, and violence for the guys, and strong kick-ass independent women for the ladies.

I honestly thought it couldn't get worse than the other ones ...

The last movies were pretty dorky, but still fun. This one was just...weird. At least the music was good. I enjoyed that along with the opening credits.

After watching all four movies this week in preparation for the fifth, Extinction is the worst. It's not that it doesn't have much action, but it has to hit every fucking horror movie trope down to the dipshit dude hiding that he got bit. Russell Mulcahy is a hack. I say that as someone that loves Razorback and Highlander. But the dude cannot direct worth a shit and the movie suffered greatly. The best part was seeing Jorah Mormont as an evil doctor.

Just saw it.

Not poor but not great. Definitely middle of the road. I would have liked to see more explanation as to
why Wesker is suddenly against Umbrella and siding with Alice and co.
Seemed random especially after the end of the last film. Of course, I would have liked to have seen more of him in this film in general.

Soundtrack and the opening credits scene were outstanding though.

You know there's some other BS angle to that situation. He's trying to kill the competition and have control all to himself! Just you wait

Please don't tell me I'm the only one who laughed at the ridiculous ending

It was pretty funny. I have no idea how to imagine what they'll do for the next film now lol.

Just came back from this. Pissed to high heaven. WESKER!!!!!

And what's up with Ada acting so robotic? She had a soft voice but it didn't sound anything like in the games

Did Wesker ever actively try and help the "good guys" in any of the games? I don't remember.

Not really, though this could be a setup to move into a film based on RE5 events. It's SOMEWHAT similar to what happened.

Wesker eventually helps topple Umbrella or at least collects their samples and such, moves into TRICELL, secures position there by moving Excella up in the ranks and becomes a conspirator with TRICELL

Very very very superficially similar.

Ah. I tried to forget the events of Resident Evil 5 :(
