As far as encouraging this price point or not, I feel it all depends on the product and the value it gives me as a consumer. I'm not gonna discriminate between handheld and console games, and I'm not particularily picky about gamelength.

But the demo left me very impressed, and washed away any bad taste 5 and the RE6 trailer kinda left in my mouth, this looks like a really good game, which I'm gonna enjoy the campaign both in regular and in hell mode, and play some good rounds of raid mode as well.

If RE:R being a success encourages other publishers to try the $50 dollar pricepoint, well then they better have a product to back it up, and I'm all for that. If they don't, I'll be happy to check the bomba bins. However, both in a vacuum and in context, this game doesn't feel less than any other game I've spent $50 dollars for.

Anybody else notice that the 3D settings are essentially like overscan settings on a HDTV?
Anything other than very high crops some information out of either side of the frame. So the 3D setting seems to just widen the visible area which by doing so adds further depth to the 3D effect. It's pretty weird they would offer voluntarily cropping the play area as an option, especially with the slider in place.....

There is no cropping going on. You get a wider field of view in 3D because the stereo camera's are offset from one another.

Agreed. It's a genuine commercial risk to go against what people are used to paying for a handheld game, but I see very little wrong in principle with this, Uncharted: GA, or any other high-quality, high-budget console-esque game for the new generation of handhelds being priced at $50.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
Once I turned my backlight brightness from 2 to 5 I could see something... not sure what it is exactly but there is a

pattern noticable all over the place, doesn't look like 15 bit dithering though. Maybe they have some sort of 7 bit per channel setup.

All Capcom's MT Framework Mobile 3DS games have some very slight dithering. Since they all use glow effects, Capcom is probably rendering using 6-bits per channel so they can fit both color and alpha (used as a glow buffer) into 24-bits.
Ok, perhaps I play at too low a brightness setting, but I did originally spend time looking for any dithering patterns, particularly in zones of bloom/bleed, and I found none. But if you guys have spotted those then I digress (but I'm not bumping the brightness setting on my 3ds ; )

I'm torn on gyro aiming. On one hand its great to be able to strafe without holding L, and the aiming seems to be decent enough, but it feels a little...jumpy? I can't put my finger on it but it feels a little off.

Also I highly recommend switching the aiming perspective from first person to third person, I think it's a lot better.

But as I said, I found it hard to spot myself. I don't think it's a problem, although it might not do the 3D mode any favours.
Now I should stop wasting my uses and try to finish Hell mode :||

Just played the demo, that was pretty awesome. Way better than the demo that came with mercs, the
guys that dropped from the ceiling
made me jump a little.

Will the circle pad be bundled with this in NA? I would maybe go for that, though it would probably cost more than 50.

Yes, in Revelation's case it's supposed to be around a fleshed out single player game as well as Raid mode. This is a full fledged RE game. It has about as much content as RE5 did which was going for $60.

$50 for a portable game is just too high in my opinion. Loved the demo, but I will also be waiting for a price drop.

Are you sure? Even in the options menu you can see it, look to the right at the edge of the sign/board thing. It completely disappears on anything other than very strong setting. Even if this is what you're referring to it's still cropping in effect, you are losing picture information on the 'weaker' settings.

I don't have a problem dropping $50 for this game. From the look and fell of it, I'll enjoy it more than RE5. I understand that some people don't want to drop $50 on a handheld game, but it's not really lacking substance because it is one. It's like a home console game, but it takes advantage of what the 3DS has to offer. Now, there was no way in hell I was going to pay $40 for RE Mercs, but it looks like Capcom has put a lot of time, money, and effort into this game, so I don't have a problem supporting them for it.

many games on handheld deserve WAY more than console games which are usually priced +$20. What's the problem with handheld gaming?

Nothing, I love handheld gaming. Its just too much to me considering most 3DS games are $40 or less. Though I think $60 is too high for consoles games also. If you don't have a problem with it more power to you.

Yeah, but most 3DS games aren't any where near the quality of this game from what it looks like.

If they tried to compensate for it in 2D or different depths, they'd have to genuinely crop the image vertically to keep the aspect ratio constant. So I think it's unavoidable. Heavy 3D just gives you a bit of extra peripheral vision, seems appropriate.

Played the the demo too!!

The 3D effect is strong on this one.. my eyes had to adjust a lot!!

Too bad 3D causes some framerate drops.

I have nothing against the demo. I actually enjoyed and impressed by it. Its just a personal threshold I guess for me and my budget. As I stated before, I do want it, just not at the $50 price point. And this is just the demo, who knows how the rest of the game will play out.

Also Zelda Ocarina 3DS, Mario Kart 7, Mario Land 3DS were all $40 and I think their quality was just as good. What makes this game so special that it "deserves" $50?

Mario Kart 7 and $40 offers more value to me than Revelations at $40. But both give me enough value to justify the purchase (for even $50 in Rev's case). If it doesn't to you, then it's totally fine, but the idea of not wanting to encourage other pubs for the $50 dollar price point is a bit silly to me, that's all.

This
is silly.

*for the record, it's pretty annoying having to explain myself again, when people are cherry picking quotes instead of looking at the actual context*

I explained it on the post above. If they wanna sell a game for $50, they better have the content to back it up. And in 5 years that's probably gonna happen twice or thrice for the system, but if, and that's a pretty big if, it's gonna encourage pubs to put out quality games for the system I'm all good.

The idea of Revelations doing good is gonna make publishers jack up the price for 10 dollars is pretty myopic, likewise, it's pretty myopic to think that Revelations doing good it's gonna make publishers turn all efforts into the dedicated handheld space is pretty myopic as well.

But what I do feel, is that it represents an incentive to create the best quality possible. The AAA model, sink or swim, doesn't work neither in consoles, and it's gonna do even worse on handhelds. So that's why I say that having one title do good, isn't gonna open the floodgates of this type business. Revelations doing good at $50 will only mean one thing only. Revelations is worth $50, nothing more nothing less. That's why I'm not condeming anybody for not wanting it, but the rationale behind it is wonky, because it's not a feasible consequence.

All of this is a moot point, because Revelations isn't gonna do good. Not at $50 and not at $40.

I agree. If a $50 pricetag is what it takes to get us more games of this caliber, then that's a price worth paying in my book. I'm not going to reject a product automatically at a certain pricepoint without considering what I'm getting for it.

If KH3D delivers on its promises I'm prepared to pay the Square Tax on that as well. I can imagine deriving no greater pleasure from $60 console games.

Not really. It has happened before on PC. Activision arbitrarily decided Modern Warfare 2 should be $60 (if you're unaware, PC for the past few years PC games were $50 compared to $60 360/PS3 because of licensing fees or whatever). I believe some Blizzard games were more expensive too, but MW2 was the one that changed things. Suddenly every EA game on PC is $60. Bethesda releases Rage and Skyrim on PC at $60. I believe Ubisoft also released some of its games at $60. And of course Activision continued to release PC games at $60. Shit sucks.

That said, I preordered Resident Evil Revelations a while back when it was $40 on Amazon, so I'll still get it. I'm weak and the problem. But generally I'll try to avoid any 3DS/Vita game at $50, as I have with PC game at $60.

Demo is awesome. Sold! Sure scanning stuff is a gimmick that just makes each room take longer (scan for weapons and other things) but its a fun gimmick!

I've seen/heard hate for the scanner but I liked it.

The moment I was sold on it was when I walked into a room, a monster was right up in my face, I was aiming to shoot it and just then realized I still had the scanner equipped. It was a nice panic moment.

Yeah same thing here no ghosting at all
To get no ghosting on every single game I've played, I have to keep my 3ds steady at the perfect distance and angle. This is made even more impossible when using gyroscope aiming (which may lead me to getting a CPP)

Unless newer 3ds' have better screens or something that lessens the ghosting effect, you guys must have robotic arms or just don't notice it at all

That's how 3D works, there's no way otherwise. Do you want them to up black bars on top top and bottom of the screen in 2D?

Many PC games have FOV settings in the options, which also change how much you see in the sides. It's a non issue.

Yeah, and just like PC games I'll be probably buying after the price drops at retail or used.

We're talking about ghosting that's unavoidable. The most well-known example is in OoT3D's Lost Woods; Link would ghost at certain points no matter what as long as 3D was on.

I guess I do have robotic arms because it's not difficult for me to stay in the sweet spot.

I haven't noticed any ghosting in the demo.

One thing is guaranteed, if this game bombs, forget it, don't even dream about it, it would be worthless, there won't be an old school Resident Evil ever again, we will al have to resign and cry while 8 millions of people play Resident of Duty: Modern Evil 6.

Anyways Linkzg, while I do understand the concern of this being some sort of catalyst for a price hike, there's on fundamental difference with the PC scenario. PC already had the quality products being released on the platform. I think it's a pretty important distinction, because just like the market shunned PSP software pricepoint at launch, it will also happen here if there's not quality products to back it up. That's why I see it as a double edged sword that has the potential to be favourable to the consumer because

a) it doesn't necesarily mean they'll raise the price, being price competitive is a huge advantage, especially against Nintendo games which won't see a hike during this generation.
b) even if it does raise, the retail environment will force the product to go down in price, allowing the consumer to decide when exactly the price is right.

of course it could potentionally back fire, but as I see it, Revelations doing good isn't inherently bad. Hell as I've said before, it might not even do a thing.

Stop making sense. STOP!

I had the chance to play it months ago in a post-E3 Nintendo tour, and that was this exact same demo.
I enjoyed the demo, but I have to admit it: replaying it at home, in my bed, with the lights off, wearing headphones.. is absolutly amazing.
In addition, this time I have the opportunity to properly test the different 3D effects and I'm loving the deepest one!
I know that the Ship/Jill sections will be just a part of the game, and probably they will be the best parts of the game. But also considering this, with the "action" chapters with Chris, one thing is crystal clear: this could be the best "classic" Resident Evil installment from Zero to ... infinite and beyond.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Was there any mention how long the story mode will be?

I love the demo, Ive put 4 hours into it so far. Its all about Hell Mode!

Did I miss something? Alternate paths or something? My first time through was an hour on normal. Hell mode took me about 30 minutes maybe.

Finding ways to conserve bullets was a lot of fun with those exploding guys. For example the first room with bookshelves seems especially designed that way (well so does the second one, but that's too obvious lol). I'm a bit afraid the scanner will make ammo a non-issue though.

Kind of takes me back to the cartridge (SNES) days, where megs used to be a selling point but also increased price. If what I read in this thread earlier is accurate, the Revelations cart is the first 4 gig 3DS game as opposed to the standard 2 gig. That, coupled with a 3rd party developer makes me begrudgingly accept the price point. After all, if this was a 2D Wii game with the same graphics, I'd pick it up at $50 no problem (as long as reviews are good and the game length is appropriate, that is).
