Resonance of Fate |OT| John Woo RPG Action and Small Racks

remember me
Just beat the game.

God. what an absolutely terrible story. I have no idea what the hell happened and I have no interest in finding out. The only positive part of the story was the joking around between the 3 main characters. Everything else was pure garbage.

The battle system was fun, but unbalanced. I had more trouble with some red grid battles and other fights in the last area than the final boss, who got owned by a tri-attack and a couple of hero walks. I was an offensive powerhouse, but could easily get a game over in a single turn by an enemy doing an AOE that hit all 3 characters.

The game got a lot easier once I knew what I was doing, but the game does a piss poor job of teaching you how to play. 20 tutorial battles in a row to learn how to play is just ridiculous and overwhelming. It should have eased you into it better. What's the point of teaching you how to do tri-attacks in the beginning when you don't even start with enough bezels to be able to do them?

It was also way too long. The dungeon zones should have been about half the size and enemies shouldn't have respawned. I wish I had skipped more of the guild missions, the rewards weren't worth the time they took. Took me a bit over 40 hrs to beat, this game should have been about 20 tops.

Been replaying this game to get the Platinum... just beat chapter 13. Damn, I love the game. The story definitely makes more sense the second time around.

Just to note, this game has been out of print since late last year.
My local Game Stop still has new copies. If your intent is to say this game would be hard to come by, I would say no. If your intent to to persuade him to buy this over Brink, I agree.

PS - The game was still full price at GameStop

I would check Amazon, I think I've seen it around $30 on more than one occasion.

Edit: Yeah, .com and .ca have it for $26 x360 and $26 PS3.

So I picked up this game a week ago (totally missed it due to FF13 timing). The combat is awesome, I love the customization of the weapons, and the side missions are great, but the story is pretty weird. I just started Chapter 6 and I have pretty much no idea what is going on for the most part, just that I am doing random mission for people that I really don't know. It isn't a deal breaker because the other parts of the game are really strong, but am I missing something here?

It explains itself more as you go. The first few chapters are just you doing mercenary missions for the nobles who hire you. Each character of the three has a back story that will get explained and fleshed out the further you get into the game.

If you are playing on PS3 too by the way check out how the trophies you unlock are making a picture for each chapter completed. :)

Yep, I am on the PS3, thanks for the tip!

"I think that qualifies as 'Mad Skillz!'"
"Next time, know who you're messing with!"
"Whenever I see an enemy, all I see is a big wad of cash. That can't be good."
"If you die on me now, I swear I'm gonna kill you!"
"Hey! You're still on the clock!"
"Did you forget to reload, Leanne?"
"Damn, how many turns did it take you to through all those, Zephyr?"

Some of the conversations they have are great too:

Zephyr: "I'm getting real tired of the friendly fire."
Leanne: "Look, I've got the hang of it, okay?"
Vash: "The jury's still out on that one."

Zephyr: "Did I just see a smile on your face?"
Leanne: "I- I...was smiling?"
Zephyr: "Yeah, it looked like you were enjoying it."
Vash: "Well, what do you know. Our little Leanne has a sadistic side!"

Leanne: "Do you want me on offense or defense?"
Vash: "Leanne goes both ways. That's good to know."
Zephyr: "Save it, willya?"

Ive put the game down now for awhile and all these lines are still memorable. I really do wish for a sequel.

Question: Do things like EXP trainer stack when everyone equips it, or is it everyone benefits from only 1 person equipping it?

It only benefits the 1 person that has it equipped, so you need 2 more to have everybody benefit. You can get them at the Arena if you don't already know.

Just get multiple ones, works only for the characters its equipped too. I know I had two 5 of the rings since they werent difficult to get, made trainer swift.

Just playing this game now and love it so far, i was just wondering three things.

1: How exactly do terminals work? I still cant seem to figure it out, do you have to place station hexes on them? i literally have no idea :(

2: for bosses with huge armour bands around them, are grenades the best things to use before you can soften them up with scratch damage?

3: what coloured hex is the best for connecting all the terminals together?

if someone could shoot me a pm, that would be great, im trying to ignore this thread for spoilers and such because its so old :(

1. Place a colored hex symbol on the terminal. It can be any color. Connect it to the dungeon your going to from the terminal. Now that dungeon gets the same buff that is currently linked to the terminal. Make sure you have enough hexes to activate that terminal though.

2. Yes, or upgrade handguns so you can cause them to break their gauges easier. Scratch them up and and finish them off.

3. It is impossible to connect all terminals together due to the Core Lifts. You can connect them through elevators so all terminals for a few floors can be connected to the dungeons your doing.

This game really took me by surprise. I have to agree with all the praise that the battle system is getting, but one other thing really strikes me when I try to summarize what is so great about the game: It is one of the rare jrpg:s that seems to be designed to be broken. The terminals, the early wide-open exploration, the customization system, the battle system focused on special attacks and the high difficulty level encourage experimentation with crazy strategies and makes the grinding needed to get these strategies in place enjoyable. This type of gameplay is very common in crpgs, but the experience is usually unfocused. For every Kangaxx fight in Baldur's Gate II you had to trudge through many boring and strategically uninteresting sections of the game to name one example. Among the jrpgs I am reminded of Final Fantasy VIII the most, which also offered a unique gameplay system, hilarious and complex ways of breaking the game but sadly not the polished difficulty curve and pacing that a game like Resonanc of Fate has to offer.

Have you played Star Ocean 2? tri-Ace's best game and also very similar in how it "seems to be designed to be broken".

I have a feeling this game will take me a long time to complete (and I do want to finish it). Reviewers were right when they stated its a "hardcore JRPG" as Ive been playing for over 12 hours, just reached Chapter 3 and JUSt started grinding in the arena.

Of course, it doesnt hurt you have Nolan North voicing Vashyron. Almost every battle I hear good ol' Drake with the traditional "You've got to be kidding me!"

131 hours and some odd minutes later, 1000/1000. And I loved every second of it. I maxed out all my characters to level 300 so the second run was a breeze; bosses were ridiculously easy and I took them out in about 1-2 minutes at most. First JRPG I've gotten all the achievements in. It's doable, it's just time consuming. Vashyron is hands down one of the funniest JRPG characters this gen. It's a shame we'll probably never see a sequel due to sales.

No, I somehow missed that one. I will definitely check it out based on the recommendation

Arena Grinding: Complete it on the first play-through or save it for a New Game? It's really starting to break me, but some of the later prizes look useful.

I didn't grind in the arena at all in my first (and only) playthrough. I played about 3 ranks in the arena and found it super boring.

I grinded on the arena, for a really long time, in chapter 4, primarily because I couldn't do the statue escort mission. Yeah, the rewards arn't really worth it.

I also found out, later, much, much, later that I could increase my overall level by equipping different weapons. I did-not-know-that. I kept Vash as scratch, and alternated between greanade and handgun for the others. Really, I was making it difficult on myself, seeing as how I grinded out levels for one weapon, on each character. I guess it was more fun that way though. Until I broke and went into danger that is.

Finally started to get into this game after owning it for a year or whatnot. Simply amazing game. I had no idea what I was missing!

I waited to switch them from being of one type until I had multiple trainer rings to increase EXP gain as well as linking terminals. Getting the effects like 50% Full Scratch Damage, etc was more important to me than levels.

I did the same thing. In fact, I gave up on the game....until a year later and decided to give it a try. This time, I took it slow and tried to understand th mechanics, then relaized, wait a sec....I can unequip their weapons??!?!?......started leveling all of them up to get high levels, etc. Eventually, I got 1000/1000 ^_^

fun game! and this is one of the few games that made me stick with the english dialogue instead of the JP lol.

So I started up the game a few months ago and after being thrown into a random battle without the game telling me anything about combat, I turned off the 360.

Now I'm on my summer break and I was thinking of trying again, but I definitely need some guidance on how combat works, or links to any good guides.

Where's the arena?

The only places I remember are the guild house and your own house.

I took some quests and went to this world map looking zone with a bunch of hexagons and gears. And then I got a random battle and died because I had no idea how to fight.

Just as you get out of the town, go south west. The arena will be there.

I got grudge sucked!
I'm trying really hard to like this game and instead its just really pissing me off. I've died 3 times vs that fucking electric beetle thing, none of the tactics seems to work. The battle system is unwieldly and while I've picked it up to a degree, its honestly kinda cheap. Too bad it didn't come out last gen so I could just gameshark and cheat my way through it. As it is now, I'm going to snap the fucking disc in half.

It was difficulty, If I recall you just need to keep targetting it from one angle to destroy an entire gauge and then aim for that spot to destroy it (or just jump and direct damage, or use, is it metal piercing rounds and grenades).

I knocked the entire shell off and thought it would be easy street from that point. Only his attacks charge up super fast so if you get zapped, you can't get an attack off in time. If you hit condition critical, he ends up healing his HP. Oh yes, I'd cheat like a motherfucker if I had the chance at this point. When you get mad enough to break things and imagining slitting the designer's throat from ear to ear, its no longer fun.

If I remember correctly, you can "cheat" this way: The beetle shoots the closest person. So make sure that the closest person is behind a wall. When that wall eventually crumbles, make the person closest to the other wall the closest person. Normal hero action, pop his shell fun and he should go down. It's a real tough fight, one of several that makes you think strategically because it's hard as balls.

What a game. Am 9 hours in, and it's absolutely addictive. Am fighting random battles and arena ones over and over just to do those delicious battles...smackdown is really fun to get off! Customization is cool as well - very realistic.

Only thing I want for the sequel is an 'easy' option and a big rack female gunslinger - though Leanne is adorable.

Funny because I abandoned Star Ocean 4 midway through: the ZENBU! ZENBU! ZENBU! moment and the idiot plot just turned me off a good battle system and exploring RPG. I only realised RoF was a Tri-Ace game later, but how can two games from the same stable be so different? Thankfully RoF doesn't try to do the epic plot thing. Cowboy Bebop is the perfect analogue.

A question I had: does a bezel break every 1000 HP on a player character even if the character has more than 1000 HP? I thought only wiping out a character's HP completely took off a bezel?

It's not really explained properly, but the bezel will break FOR ever 1000hp. So if you have a character with 5k hp and he gets scratched out, you will lose 5 bezels.

And yeah, after 96 hours, i have the platinum. This game is definately not perfect, and i feel like in a lot of ways it is less than the sum of its parts, but ultimately its parts by themselves are fucking sweet for the most part. I kinda want to make a lttp but im so lazy T_T

alright i already wrote this game off as a JRPG i would not buy since reviews were so so and user impressions not all that either back then...

Now you guys got me interested in it again though, can someone sum up real quick just WHY this game IS worth getting after all? To me in a JRPG, the atmosphere and setting/environment matter most, how are those in this one?

It's made by the group that did Valkyrie Profile 2.

Speaking of which, go play that game too.

May I suggest NOT to play that game? It's unbelievably broken yet crap especially when improved upon by 3. Hell, 4 is much better than 2 and that game is crap.

I really really enjoyed the battle system and customizing my guns (though this is probably the first game I've ever customized my guns before). I really liked say about the first 25 hours. Then the lack of any story or feeling of progression just killed it for me. The battle system could only keep me entertained for so long.

Yeah, thanks. Figured that out later...you get fully scratched and then the game subtracts a bezel for every 1000 HP of your HP bar until you get back to full health. Sadistic design choice that...if you go from 1000 HP to 1001 HP, a full scratch takes off 2 bezels instead of 1, and you only have 3 bezels.

It's made by the group that did Valkyrie Profile 2.

Will do. Though with quite a PS3 and PC backlog, it's going to be some time before I get there. Does it work well with PCSX2?

For the battle system, mainly.

The setting and atmosphere are great for the post apocalyptic, dying-world feel, though it's not a very dark game in terms of presentation. It's steampunk. And don't expect FFXIII visuals ( though I felt that while FFXIII had great eyecandy, you felt like you were a virtual tourist, and didn't own the world, if that makes the sense.) ROF is certainly congruent and stitched-together. In terms of exploration, it's mostly quick travel, so it's not like Star Ocean where you explored larger worlds.

I'm not very much in, so can't tell you how good the story is, but the thread suggests it's relatively threadbare...don't expect any epic storylines and you'll be fine. The focus is really more on the protagonists than any major story arc so far, and it's refreshing. I found the characters to be far more endearing than the typical anime cliches that populate a fair degree of JRPGs nowadays.

Ok i just figured i can get the game off amazon for like 20 bucks new, i guess it might be worth a shot at that price hmm...

even if i won't get around to it for like 2 years due to huge backlog(not even joking here) i heard it's out of print so it might be hard to track down later

That price is more than worth it, I got it at a sale price, had it shelved for a few months and enjoyed it greatly.
